The loss of such a man as Judge McDonald.is ti public calamity, ffe.was an able jurist, liberal, honest and high toned in allrbia views, both in public and private life. A more conscientious and pure man never held in hia hands tbe scales of justice. He wail ripe.inthe knowl&lgt his profession, and aa Judge, dealt jusCice impartially, and with a strict adherence to the fundamental principlea of lhe law. His place will be difficult to fill. Judge McDonald enjoyed tbe good will and ea^ teem of men of all shades of politics.—*He was, in a word, regarded aa a pure and able man by the moat brilliant |ighu of the Indiana bar, /Judge l^Dptfald WAS born in Boiirbbn county, Kentucky, on the 8th of May, 1803, and was sixty-sjx years old at the tiniift of his death.
His father emigrated with hia famijy to Davieu county, Indians, 1817. In Kentucky young McDonald attended sehool in the fall and winter, but after his falh. era lemoval to Indiana, he attended school only-twelve weeks. But wha| he lacked in early education be more than made up by tbe closest and most laborious study in after life. He began the study of law in Washington, Indiana, in 1828, and was admitted to tbe bar in 1830. He was a member of the Indiana Legislature of 1833, ahd in December, 1834, was elected Prosecuting Attorney of the Seventy Judicial District, the duties of which office ha performed with Euch marked ability and honesty tbat he was re-elected in f8S6. "H6 'w^s'jjfterwarda appointed Circuit Judge of the Tenth Judicial District, a Lid at the same time conducted the law. school at the State University.
He removed to Indianapolis jo J.853, and went into partnerabip with William Henderson and William A. McKenpie. In 1855 be formed a partnership with Hon. Albert G. Porter. He lost his wife in 1854. Was appointed Judge of the United States District Court in 1864, by Mr. Lincoln on the death of Judge Albert 3. White. This position he Ailed with honor and distinction' up to the lim6 of bis death. No fear or favors or hop* of reward or dread -of consequences swerved bis unerring judgment. Strong in the consciousness of his own integrity, he west boldly forward ia the path of doty.
