tbii CITY TO permanently sur

render large portion of the traie that hat hitherto centered here, the proposed Southeastern railroad, -through Clay and Greene counties, to the I. & V. Railroadj must be speedily constructed. Ali«&y Indian spoils, and other cities, are absorbing the trade of a large, fertile and populous region whose natural market Terra Haute. fcOur merchants are placed at such a disadvantage, by the opening up of the I. & V- Railroad, that nothing short of direct communication can enable them to compete successfully for the trade of any of the towns on that line. One of our wholesale grocery houses is shipping goods to Worthington, the seller paying the freight to Indianapolis. Of course there can be no profit in such a transac.

tion. We have given a great deal of time and space to the advocacy of this Southeastern railroad, but have yet to learn that the subject is receiving the attention that its importance demands. Like many other railroad matters, impenetrable myBtery surrounds it and the purposes of those •who give direction to such enterprises are not easily- learned.

THE

famous segars of Havana have

achieved their reputation not solely be cause they are composed of a superior quality of tobacco. Plants in all respects similar to those used in Havana have baen rolled into segars here, and yet they pos sewed not the desirable flavor of the Ha vana. There seems to be something in our climate that has a deteriorating in fiuence on the tobacco while under treat ment for segars. Therfore, we are com pelled to import all the choice brands. A celebrated Cuban manufacturer, taking into consideration that the climate of Key West, Florida, was similar to that Cuba, determined to try the manufacture of segars at that point. The experiment proved a success, a large factory has been erected, the beat tobacco is brought to from Cuban fields, and two hundred thousand segars per month are now being turned out from the Key West es* tablishment. They are said to equal in flavor the finest brands of Cuban segars. and can be furnished to American consumers at from 30 to 40 per cent lees than the present prices asked and paid for similar articles.

Oar foreign segar trade is likely to be evolutionized by this enterprise. More factories will soon be established at Key West, and the segars can be produced still lower rates by the introduction of Chinese workmen. In California the Mongolians are employed in the eegar manufactories, and their skill in manipu* lating'tobacco is described by intelligent and reliable persons who have witnessed it as something bordering on the marvelr oue. They are not only rapid and dexterous workmen, but imitate the shape and size of a pattern segar with a fidelity that renders distinction between the mod and copy impossible even to experts.

THE St. Louis Democrat mentions the very note-worthy caso of a railroad company that has actually been found honest or sensible enough to refuso to join a combination for swindling the public by rates of freight. The President of the Baltimore and Ohio road, Mr. GARRETT, deserves the honor, and ho tells everybody in his report that "the coal carrying interests of Pennsylvania have urgently pressed his company to advance materially its rates," showing him that he could make a million eight hundred thousand a year by joining them. And be refused I We wonder whether there are many of his family, and if they are otherwise qualified for railroad officers. It is to be hoped that the Baltimore and Ohio will reap a rich reward in the increasing patronage and favor of the public. So marked an iostance of sensible management ought not to pass unnoticed.

CALVINISM gets no mercy at the hands of Mrs. HARRIET

BEECHKR STOWK. In

her "Oldtown Folks'' she attributed tb lapse from virtue of one of the female characters to Calvinism, and in her defence of Lady BYRON, which bas just appeared, Mrs. STowE,through the mouth of Lady BYRON, holds "the Calvinism theology as heard in Scotland," as responsi ble, partially at least, for the social crimes of Lord BYRON.

There is some farce in the suggestion of the Cleveland Herald that Calvinism —even the hell-hot kind, that preordains a man to eternal misery, and then tells him he must shun a doom the Almighty, from the beginning of the world, had pro* nounced against him—has enough to answer for without being held responsible for the incest of

BYRON.

THK

report of the presentation of Gen

eral SIOKLKS, American minister to Spain, which took place at Madrid, taken from Otilignani's Messenger of the 4th inst., shows that the Regent Marshal SERRANO, warmly complimented our representative in the very words sent forward by the call* telegraph. As some efforts have been made to show that no such compliment was proffered, we reprint the words of Marshal

SERRANO

to General SICKLES,

HI follows: "As to you, sir, whose highly distinguished qualities are known to me, 1 feel a pleasure in assuring you that the President ef the United States could not have made choice of a person more agreeable to me than yourself to fill that honoraV- position."

A LETTER written to the Episcopalian and republished in the Protestant Churchman, dated at Chicago, says "Brother CHENEY will get bis walking papers, unless ho repents his course, :ch he wfll not do, no matter what pressure is brought to bear on him." Tho writer says the feeling in favor of a thorough reformation in the church is growing. He says •'the sovereign powers of the Bfshop must be shorn of %ir dictum for oppression

Church discipline must be made to conform to our national declaration of independence and the liberal views of the people. We want no crowned heads in this land of liberty." I don't believe in compromises,''he continues, "nor do I thinji our differences in the Church can be reconciled to suit either High or Low Churchmen. Carious scene in aNew Orleans Conrt Krom the New Orleans Ploayuue.] Many persons attending the sessions of the Recorder's Court in this city have been editied by the peculiar solemnity with which oatbs are administered, and the awe with which they are generally taken. It so happened that Wednesday morning an ungainly looking specimen of tbe recently enfranchised made his appearance before one of these tribunals in tbe capacity, of a witness. The Judge, with an austerity of visage that at once creates tbe impression of profound melancholy, held out tbe book to tirt'wittiest, and administered his solemn adjuration to, speak the trutb. At the conclusion, of course, it is expected that the witness will ki9s tho book. But this "ward of the nation" was unused to criminal proceedings, and entertained curious ideas of the manner and propriety of swearing, and stood erect. "Why don't you kiss?" demanded the magistrate. i. "Sar!" "Ain't you going to kiss?" was again inquired.

Sar! ropealed the astonished darkey, evidently mistaking the meaning of the court, and surprised beyond measure at such an invitation. "Kiss, 1 tell you!'' thundered tho Judue. "Yes, sari yes, sari" exclaimed the frightened and trembling darkey, nerving himself for tbecontemplated eiubrace, and without moro ado the long arms of the son of Hani were thrown around the judicial neck, and before ho could bo provented a stentorian smack resounded through the court room. •'Quit you beast—help! help!" shouted the magistrate. But the darkey enjoyed the luxury, and the embrace was renewed with nnction. "Take him off! Take him off!" eriod the Court while the loud sbouls of the spectators testified tbeir appreciation of the fun. At last, however, the officers of tbe court interfered, and tbe half-strangled Judge was rescued from tfco clasp of tho liberal witness. "Catch him I Put him in jaiU I'll have bim hung!'' were some of the infuriated objurgations of the Court, as be leaned, back against the wall, bis facei fl tshed and his clothes torn from tbe reoont encot.'Mer. 'God in Heaven I That 1 should be hugged by a nigger!" and tbe Judge again poured forth his vituperations.— But the offending darkey was at last locked up, and tbe court settled down to its habitual order andquiet.

Another Long Island Plain Bought by a Millionaire—A Village to be Built Near Islip.

A laree proportion of real estate of Long Island is owned by tbe various corporate towns, and when of it aie uoade they generally embrace large traeta aa extensive as a Southern plantation before the war. The latepurchase of Hempstead Plains by Mr. Alexander Utewart is an illustration in point. It was night at the time, and although every possible exT ertion was made to rescue the boy,yet they were unsuccessful, and Ilia little {toy wis given up for lost. Shortly afterward the family came to New Orleans, and in time thegtief-^fthepiminti for the'lossoflhelr son became only a sorrow living in their memories. He was dead, they thought, and grief could not bring him back to life. Bat he waB not dead. He had got possession of one of the planks thrown out 'to him, and although missing Jiis friends, was picked up 1 be next day by an English vessel. In this Bhip he made the voyage to China, and failing to commnnieate with his family on Us return, contioued io the employment of the vessel for several years. At last, learning .the whereabouts of his family, he reached this city in quest of them a few days since.

The joy which thp appearance of one they bad long considered dead can, as the novelists say, be more easily imagined than described. OLIVER GOLDSMITH, in his inimitable story, sends the Vicar of Wakefield to jail for debt. But Goldsmith's Vicar waB a creation of has mind^ndjmprisonment for debt was in force in England at the time be wrote. But a real live Vicar has been sent to jail in London not for debt however, but for drunkenness. It was a Vicar hailing from the neighboring Dominion, "tihe Bev. Henry Dudley Batea Jessop, the Vicar ot Toronto. He was charged at tbe Guildhall Police Court, London, the other day, 'with being drunk and assaulting the police in tbe execution of their duty,' The reverand gentleman was found in St, Paul's church yard—a very proper place—on Sunday nigtai but be was indulging in very reprehensible conduct, swearing and cursing because some one bad stolen his hood. He pitched into the policemen who advised bim to go to his hotel, and altogether behaved so badly, that be was arrested. On being called on for his defense, be stated that be had preached that morning at St. Bartholomew's, Bethnal Green, from tbe parable of tbe Prodigal Son after the sermon he bftd supped with tbe vicar of that parish, and had got into trouble on bis way home. The magistrate thought he was very much like the prodigal son himself, and sent bim back ft prison to eat busks for a few days."

A Balloon in a Maine WildernessMr. Samuel A- King,* the aeronaut giyes tho following amusing account of an a^iiture in the rioSrtbern wilds of Maine:

I bad an unusually long air-voyage from Bangor, with several companions, and was passing over almost an unbroken wilderness of forest and lake looking in vain for a landing. Might was coming on, and tbe question where to land becamo a serious one. No sound of civilization, not a gun or an axe, nothing but primitive sounds of nature. "Here is an opening," cried one passenger, "why not land here?'1 No! boys, have a little patience we .can do much better by running down to the coast in tbe counter current above us. Darkness had come on, but see—"A light! alight!"

This was the exclamation of one who a moment before thought he was doomed to starve in the wilderness. Sure enough, there was a light it was a great way off, and might not be in our coursc yet gradually we approach it. At one time it seemed to be off to tbe right, and then away to tbe left but nearer it camesj till it is seen streaming from a window bqneath us.— There is a dark,.open space below. Is it land or water I see a fenee. Oveir with the anchor, and in a moment more we find ourselves swinging by tho anchor rope over a newly cleared field, among the stumps and logp. We had landed in the only inhabited spot within twenty miles, noar a saw mill on tbe Oromuclo river. The people who run the mill live nearby, and it was from their window that we saw the light. Wishing for some assistance to remove the balloon to smoother ground, if possible, before letting the gas out we remained in tbe car, and taking up my speaking trumpet I hallooed, but the unearthly sound was adding terror to tbe already frightened inhabitants.

One man, however, a little braver than the rest, ventured out after awhile, and inquired what is it any bow By dint of explanation and persuasion, we succeeded in getting bim tocometo us. Giving bim a line that was attached to the car be was requested to make it fast to a certain log to prevent the balloon from swaying about till we could get more help. Becoming impressed with the idoa that our lives were in danger, and that our safety depended on bim, he froze to that rope in a wounderful manner, was a little short, and though he tried hard to make it fast every time the balloon would settle, still be could- not get it fastened. Then the balloon wculd rise, and up he would go twenty feet or more, and down again to try tbe same thing over, but he soon began to feel exhausted, and, remembering his companions, broke out with: "Say! you blasted, golldumered, cowardly sneaks, come out and help me the darned thing will kill me!"

This Btarted them soon five others made their appearance and asssisted in moving the ballon to a belter place. The first they kewofthe balloon was from one of the woman who was Just returning from milking, seeing the monster just above her, and descending, she dropped her pail and fled to th# house, screaming in tbe most frantic manner when asked the matter, she could only reply, 'Oh, it is a forerunner I I know it is a forerunner?" In this backwoods place they bad never heard of a balloon, and many were the wonders and surmises as to the meaning of our strange appearance among them. Tbe oldest man of them all, however, seemed to have hit upon tbe right idea, and coming up to me, in a jocose way, says be: "Ab! yer skedadlers!" "How jaany more js there up tba'er It didn't take ao big a coach to bring so faw of ye?" He was induced to change his mind at last, when "big coach 'Jlay, prone upon the ground.
