"NIBBLTNOS."—WHAT IT COSTS OUR GROCERS.—The proprietor of a grocery store in Indianapolis, having como across the following paragraph in a newspapei he was reading, clippod it out and sent it to tbe Journal of that city for publica tion. For tbe benefit of all others en gaged in the grocery business, we print if, antt in doing so take occasion to calMhe attention of certain people to it: "Some of our grocery men complain of a species of biped that infest stores and are constantly nibbling around, taking a chew of tobacco, a bit of cheese, a lump of sugar, an apple, or a handful of berries, or anything they take a fancy to Four or live of these nibblers eat a man up in a year or two. It is very annoying, and is, to say the least of it,-a species ©f small thoughtlessness."

This disposition to nibble is a mild species of kleptomania, with which noarly everybody is afflicted to a greater or less degree. Grocers undoubtedly suffer the most from it of any species of tradesmen as they deal in articles which every person is disposed to eat, and in order to sell their wares they must expose tbem to sight. At one time, a jear or two ago, the custom prevailed of covering up barrels and boxes with a wire net-work, through which customers could see but not taste, but this plan seems to havo bean generaly abandoned now. Perhaps it is on the principle that "stolen fruit is always the sweetest," that tbe lump of sugar, the pieceof cheese, the peach, or whatever it may be, which is "tasted" always better than thepackagoof wbich it was a sample is when it is deliverod at home. There are many persons who are consciencious in this respect, and never touch an article until it is weighed out, but tbey usually havo to taste it just before it is tied up, and they know that it is always better then than when the package opened at home again. These little tastfs are almost a matter of ne£assity, and the man who never peroiita himself to indulge in them carries with him through lif§ a very heavy cross. a

If it wore only the regular customer, one whose trade is worth something, who indulged in these ltttle pickings, tbe whole thiog could be remedied by adding a small percentage now and then, to bis bill or, many would not grumble if a little item should be added now and then to his bill, such as Nlbbllcgs todate...,. 76

As it is,the grocer is compelled to make up frotfi his regular customers not only the amount of their own pickings but those of tbe dead beats as well or bear the loss himself, and usually, we imagino the burden oomes principally upon him.

Very lew persons have much idea of the extent of this tax upon the dealers in a city like this. We asked a retail grocer last ovening what it cost him, and heaaid, at first, a dollar a day, but upon second thought said it was more. It probably amounts to fully five hundred dollars a yew—»t most the coat of a clerk—and taking the whole city together, it will ambunt to fully ten or fifteen thousand dollars a year. This seems like a large sum, but an estimate can readily be made which willsupport it.

We have heard of a lounger who was cured of whitling a tailor's counter by having a corner of bis coat tail clipped off by the tailor's shears but this will not put an end to all the nibbling. In some cases, eoaie such remedy is necessary, and a grocer must estimate whether he,vii& gain or loee by losing a customer who Is an inveterate and persistent nibbler. In the main, howevor, he must make calcu* lationa upon a large amount which he can not thus put A stop to, and must count in a large item on the debit aide of his profit and loss account under this head, in striking his balance. It is a passion of human nature which must be met, and like many other evils, nibbling must be kept in check as much as possible, but it can never be entirely done away. "-vra-

FREIGHTS are carried by all rail between Chicago and New York for twelve cents per hundred pounds, whicb will scarcely more than pay for the axle grease. It is a good thing temporarily, for the shippers, who are not letting grass grow beneath the dray horses' feet as they send goods to the depots, but a day of reckoning will come when the now warring lines will combine to compel the public to more than make up the diflor. ence between these rates and fairly prol itable prices.—

Cleveland Htrald.

This explains why several shipments from this city to New York have been made by way of Mattoon and Chicago.

LINAS A. BURNETT, besides being model Postmaster, i3 "no slouch" as merchant, as his fine success in the whole sale and retail leather business abundant ly proves. The house of Burnett & Co at Nos. 144 and 146 Main street, in this city, is one of the leading houses, in that business, in the State, and is constantly increasing its trade throughout a large section of Indiana and many counties in Illinois. Mr. Burnett is now at the east purchasing goods for tha firm, the first installment of which has been received Mr. J. F. Meacbam, tbe junior membero tbe house, showed us yesterday what we believe to be the largest stcok of leather ever brought to Terre Haute. It con sists in part, of 1,500 sides of assorted brands of Oak and Hemlock sole, 200 dozen French and German calf and kip: an ecdlew number of domestic akina all weight and of the best tannage Beaumerville, Cbiccoineau, Chelsea, Jodot, Bock, Lemoine, Leven Mate and select Female, Mercier, Massinman and E'Dorand, Bethore, Schweighardt and Kurtz, Simon, Surser and Thibaud, Glove Calf Kid and all other kinds of Morocco

Their stock o« shoe findings is very large and complete. Mr. T. J. Huffman, late of the firm of O'Boyle & Huffman, is now with Burnett &,£o. He has a thorough knowledge of the .business, and is extremely popular with U)9 patrons of the house

HORS* TflJEyES ARRESTEP.— Wed nesday evening, a man who gave his name aa Wallace Dowdy camo in town from tbe West, and offered to sell a horse he was riding, at so much below its real worth that suspicions were aroused that the animal was stolon. Pat. TullfSy gave the man five dolfars to bind the bargain uiitil next rtornTng In the meantime Dan. Crowe, Chief of police, was notified and Dowdy was arfasted and placed in

Jail. Yesterday morning J. M. Bovard, of Effingham, Illinois, arrived in tbe city and claimed the h,orse. leopard states that Dowdy borrowed the horse to ride to Marshall. lid forgot to stop tberej and came onto this place. The owner was disposed to take his horse and return home, not caring to have the trouble of prosecuting the thief. In this case the authorities would be compelled to let him go, to prey upon the community again and accordingly Bovard was taken before

Esq. JDepehie, who placed him under bdndB-to jappjfar and prosecute the thief, Tbe required bail not being given imme diately, Bovard was placed in jail along with the thief for an hour, when Moesrp George C. Bulz and B. Booth placed their named upoh bond.

Dowdy was examined before Esq. Den ehie, and'was remanded back to jail to await tbe action of the Criminal Court, under bonds of $500.

Yesterday morning another man came in from the same direction with a brown pacing mare, valued at $250 or $300 which he offered to sell for eighty dollars —wouldn't refuse seventy-five dollars He, aUo, was "taken in out of the wet,' and is now sojourning in jail, awaiting the arrival of the owner.

From tbe Indianapolis Journal.] THE GERMAN OPERA.—Tbo Maennerchor had the encouragement of a very large audience last evening, comprising the whole of the music-loving portion of our citizens, who were surprised as well as delighted with the performance. The action of the pieces depended mainly on the leading characters, who have all tbe acquirements of professionals the performance had more of tbo hi .ches or ex travagances of amateur performer*.

In fact, both the acting and singing of Mis* Flora Kunz showed that sbe bad profited by tbe most professional training She was in excellent voic.e, too, and sang superbly tbe Aria at the close of the second act, being admirably rendered. Sbe retirod fromastorm of deserved applause, which continued until after the dropping of the curtain, when she^ame before it to make her acknowledgements.

Mr. Miller did not seem to be in as gcod voice as usual, but he performed the character of Lux with much skill.

Mr.iKuhn acted tbe School Master Bunt to the life, and was most heartily applauded. Mr. Healing's Joseph was well done. The duett with Suschen in the first act was gop^. The trio in the second a?tbatweet Bund, Joseph and Suschen, and the duett in the last a/pt between Lux and Bund were both exquisite and highly enjoyed by the audience. The humor of the pieces mainly depended on Adam, the barber's assistant, a character admirably performed by Mr. A. Viewig. Professor Weegmem conducted, and the excellent performance mostly due to his thorough management, fhe orchestra was well handled and did admirably. The orchestra treatment of the pieces ip good throughout, ani the accompaniment to Suscben's love song in the first act is as beautiful as tbe ravishing melody of the little maid-

The Germans undoubtedly have the best of it in the dialogues but tb,e little shreds of song here and there were enough to delight all who had ears' to hear, and we but express thegeneral wish in hoping the Msennarchor will not lay the Village Barber on tbe shelf with tbis performance.

This opera will be performed by tha Indianapolis Maennerchor at Downing jlall on Monday evening next.

STBAINA KLBBKO.

In acceptance of th* above agency, I would state for the benefit of all who bave heretofore been using otheir qualities, which were generally accompanied by cheaper rates, say 12(§12£c, tbat thoae qualities were very iaferlor to that which I now offer, particularly that from tbe "Otter Greek Ooal Company," or any bank with which there is a furnace connected, Inasmuch as no better than second or third rate, that whioh cannot be used for furnace parpoeea, ever seei the Terre Hants market, for whioh agents charge almost the same ratea at which much better can be fnraiabed, These facts I can substantiate, if necessary for convincing proof. I will, at all timea, use my beat endeavors to accommodate, both aa regards quality and qnaatiiy and price, and truit by close attention to all orders, to recti»» a liberal ahare of patrooage.
