into Ihig city, and all oar principal straets, are croised by lines of railway, over which trains of«a« we passing at all h^ra of day ana night. The vast amount of switching that has to be done at a railroad center, like Oils, is done—not beyond U»e city limits as in most other places—but in town and across our principal thoroughfares. This state of things Involvos enormous xiska of life or peiaopal injury, risks which cannot be entirely removed, but may be greatly diminished by the adoption of proper precautionary
^measures, such, for instance, as the etaploymont of flagmen at crossings to warn foot-passengers, or the occupants of approaching carriages, when trains are
about to pass. "Within the past few days, two awful
events, each involving the loss of a life, and one of them placing in Imminent peril the lives of sovoral other persons, iiave occurred upon railroad crossings in this city. We charge no unusual want of care, no gross neglect of duty, upon the employes of any of our railroad companies, in connection with these disasters.
It is not for the interest of such compa nies to jeopardize or destroy life, and we have no doubt that their officers and employes regret snch fatal occurrences as deeply as any other class of citizens.— But we are very confident that both these accidents—and many others. In which there has been awful danger and where death or mutilation has been nar» rowly escaped—might havobeen prevented by tbe employment of two flagmen to guard that number of crossings.
The extension of tho T. H. & i. Bailroad, and the completion of other contemplated lines will much enhance tho dangers to which we allude and •which arc alroady sufficiently great to demand im mediate attention. Wo call upon the City Council to move iri this matter at
once, to move earnestly and effectually. That they will find the officers of the rail
road companies ready to submit to roasonablo restrictions, and to adopt protoor precautions against tho rocurronco
shocking tragedios, wo cannot doubt.

THK latest special deposit we have heard of is that mentioned by the Hew York Tribune as having been made by a man who, being happily possessed of $3,300 in bunds, hid the same in an ash-hole. His wife made a fire there to smoke bacon, in consequence of which the bonds nearly experienced the fate of JOHN ROGERS The owner sent the blackened and char* red remains to the Treasury for redemp tu a and after great labor they have been in 'antified and restored. But it is a sen oib question whether a man, by his con surumale folly, has any right to impose this work upon the bureau of redemption At any rate, ho should be forced to pay a good, handsome per centage on tbe •\mount lound out by tho long and diffi cult scrutiny which his hiding propensity -one of the meanest in tho world —fnade nficessary.
THERK appear to bo good grounds fo tho belief that the President is attempt ing, in a quiet way, to purchaso or annex St. Domingo, and it would not be at all surprising if her territory constituted the next addition to the area of the great RE public. We need cheap sugar and coffee from some quarter of the world, and
UD
der a proper industrial and political re construction wo can, perhaps, secure sup plies on better terms from that region than from any other. One advantage it possesses over Cuba, as an acquisition, is
that the slavery question was long since settled, and instead of entoring on a new quarrel over that issue, wo can commence new operations on the basisalready established in our Southern States.
GEORGE W. CURTIS, in Harpers WicMy, says the Democracy as a party of principles, "has ceased tobeformidable but as a conspiracy against honest elec tions it still challenges tho vigilanco)f every man who values .true popular gov em men t. Would you rocommend its reformation, or its abolition Wo think it osoful in ono respect, at least. It enables us to send to "farrin parts" a groat many fellows whose absence benefits this country. In this way it accomplishes some of the good that might bo obtained by the estabHshment of a penal colony.
recent toS the President did not repudiate the Conservatives until "the most positive evidence had been produced of their inten

He seems, at last, to have been fully convinced that the whole movement in the South was a deliberate sale to the rebels, in which an tbe advantages were on thpir side. Afraid to meet the issues presetted squarely,a surface acquiescence was g^v en with the full intention,:if Successful of defeating them by local legislation, ^he scheme may have worked well so far, tut since its exposure these unscrupulous kctors must come to grief. A new causo of unoasiness has reconty arisen—an approhenBion that tho attompts of the Czar to Kussianizo the Gorman population of tho Baltic provinces, will ignito the flames of a conflict There, as is woll known, ALEXANDER is applying the same rude system of assimilation, which resulted so disastrously when forced upon Poland, and it bids fair to raise difficulties like those enveloping that unhappy country. The system consists in an indiscriminate seizure of national" ities, and the appliance of forcible measures to make the captured people Bussians in thought, education and languageIt is a tyrannous mode, and, of course, awakens opposition. It haB ground down the German element in the Baltic provinces, until they now exhibit symptoms of rebellion, and hence the fear of war in that section of the Continent.

the bodies removed. The -case jrefert«d i^waa pressed at the time but yeara have since then, and {lie' facts can now made public witbout violating any coi dence or wounding the sensibilities of friends. la the little villiage of i! ., in »e State of Wisconsin, a young and beai$i ful married lady died suddenly, and Was burried in accordance with prevailing custom. A day or two after the funeial tbe bereaved husband repaired to cemetery to make arrangements for si ably inclosing and adorning the fam burial lot, when Be discovered certain mistakable evidences that the grave been disturbed.
Calling in tbe aid of the sexton, new-made grave was soon opened and worst fears of thepoor widower were confirmed. Tbe coffin and caring were still in the grave, but the corpae Ji*d been removed.
No words Can describe tiie horror anguish produced in the mourning band by this terrible discovery. He read of similar instances of body-snai ing at distant points, but never reali bow much of sufferingand suspense tt robberies entailed npon the surviving latfves and .friends. The grief over} a loving wife had almost crushed bim, |ut the additional blow drove him to frenzy. He resolved that neither effort nor morey to recover his wife's remains, and puniBh tbe ghouls who had despoiled her grave, should be spared. I
Officers and detectives Were Sent out immediately in all directions, andf a tempting reward made tbe search thorough and energetic one. But days elapsed, and no clue to the perpei tors of tbe outrage had been discovei The husband himself repaired to Chici and at once secured the services of a mous detective to work up the case. less than twenty-four hours a "p was obtained. The night previous or three mysterious "packages" had b^ left with the janitor of tbe Medical lege and, armed with the necessary cial authority, the detective and his ployer visited the institution that aftbr noon.
The business had been managedjsi quietly and well that no suspicion wa aroused in the college, and tbe visitors were allowed to stroll through the library, «e-
the museum, and other interesting
questions, by answering* partments of tbe institution. As thpy 1 conior a favor on tbo hn- approached the ante-room leading to die dissecting room several students were observed to pass themselves in with lafch keys, carefully closing the door behind them. Itwas evident a practical lecture ||}h was in progres, and the detective det|r- |in mined to effect an entrance to the lecture
room. I Lounging carelessly near the door, lie watched for the coming of another afu^ dent, and had soon pressed his wfcy through thepasttage and into the dissect* ing room. He was followed closely by the person raost interested in the rasalt of this investigation. The semicircle,of seats, arranged like those in an ampitheatre, waa well filled with professional spectators.
On a long table below lay an outstretched form, covered with white cloth from head to foot. The Professor toad evidently been talking a few minutes fto his class, and waa just getting ready to illustrate, practically, his subject. On the other aide of the corpse aeveral cases |of instruments were arranged, and two assistants stood by with aprons on ajid sleeves rolled back.
The order to remove the covering from the corpse was given, and as the cloth rolled back, exposing tbe face and bust of a female, an exclamation was heaird which sent a thrill of terror through the assembly, and blanched the Professor's face with fear. "Great God 1 my wifelv
A wild and tumultuous scene followi The frantic husband rushed to the table, pistol in hand, and, re-covering the exposed face of the corpse, threatened wijlh instant death whoever should again uncover or touch it. The lecturer and his class were not disposed to dispute the claim thus set up, and rutitied pell mail from the apartment.
A few words complete the story. The rifled, grave once more received its original occupant, and for many months a constant watch was kept over it. Legal proceedings were commenced against the medical institution, but the affair was compromised and settled without a trial. The calling of the "resurrectionists" received a terribe blow, and body-snatch* iflg, for many years thereafter, became both a difficult and dangerous employment.

TAFPAN did not in all casss tadquiih those with whom he came in conflict.— On one occasion, Lorenzo Dow, an eccentric genius and preacher, who became famous for his wit and sarcasm, some thiriy or forty years since, was invited to preach at Steubeaville, whera Tappan lived. Tappan, unlike his two famous brothers in this city, Was an avowed infidel, add had a number of followers among tbe prominent men of tbe place. Hearing that Dow was to preach, thay arranged a scheme by whicn they would have an opportunity to try his., mettle. Tappin called upon bim, under the respect for his eminent reputation, and invited hi(n to dine. Daw, who was fully appriaad bf the object, at ooce accepted tbe invitation. Tappan had all his infidel friends present, and the conversation naturaljy turned on religiotn subjects. All sorts if questions, intended to embarrass Do#, were put. Finally, Tappan, in bis squeak* ing, nasal tone, addressed him somewhat after tbis fashion: "Mr. Dow, what bind of a place is this they call purgatory They tell me.it's about half way between here and belt."
