Near the cusps of the phonomena of totality Bailey's beads were seen distinctly by all the observers, extending through an area of at least fifty degrees. The mornent the eclipse became total flame-like protuberances were seen with wonderful distinctness, one very large one o» *&e lower limb of the sun end three nearly as large on the upper l|mb, while at least levHk or eight' 'of then in all' were visible. The one on the right hand or lower limb }i*d tomevhat the appearance of a full rigged ship with sails set. In its par* nearest the moon were two or three jet black spots, which to the naked eye seemed as though they were openings or fis" sures in the moon, two on the east side and one on tbe south-west side. Just after the total eclipse, through the openings, the lurid glow of the sun was distinctly visible. The corona was apparent to ail observers either with or without instruments.
It was hot as generally described lii books, &o. a halo of light surrounding the moon, but was distinctly seen to be a fine pointed prong on the lower, and two on the upper circumference of ,the_moon. These points had a radiant appearaace. The genorally received theory rogarding this corona, that it is the atmosphere of the sun, does not seem to ba sustained by observations made at this point. It is conjectured that the corona is in some way caused by the phenomena of light passing through the atmosphere.
