•RDITORS FXPRSSS Some or your read ers may want to know what stars are to be looked for this afterttoob at tho time of the greatest obscuration.

Nearly overhead a little to the south will be seen the bright star Arcturus, and Lyra a star of the first magnitude, thirty-seveh degrees high in the northeast. Low down in the southeast Antares and In th4 oast Altair, just above the horizon) while Oapella will nearly down itf the northwest. Some of the stars of the Dipper mny be seen, for it will be high up in the north-western hoavenft Venus will be seen about 21 degrees from thef sun in the south-west, From these brighter stars (if the weather permits them to bo seen) the observer can make out any others that appear.

R. S. B.

FOR OBSERVING THE ECLIPSE-

the great eclipse is near at hand it will not be out of order to give a few hints to those who desire to witness the phenomenon to the b«st advantage. We suppose that all persons are aware that they ought to look at the sun, when viewing the commencement and progress of the eclipse, through smoked glass, if they are unable to provide themselves with a 'spectroscope. One scientific observer recommends* that ruby colored glass be used, while another says that glass covered with asphaltum varnish ie the best

If the iatter. sbotnld be selected, by vary, iag the thickaets of tbo costing, the lighter porlions:.can.be used as the darkness increases, The glass will* ba very useful in noticing the commencement of the eclipse when the moon's disc is just coming in contact with the sun. This will take place about an hour before the beginning of the total obscuration. There are ir.any interesting observations within the power of every one to make, namely: to observe whether the moon can be seen before it touches and just after it leaves the disc of the sun whether the circular hue of light, when the moon is just about to cover the sun, and just before the reappearance of the sun, is broken into small portions, resembling somewhat a string of beads, and for this reason called Bail^s Beads, from the person who first described the phe omen on. It should be noticed also whether there are any flashes of light across the moon's disc, during the progress of the eclipse. The general appearance as to form, color, uniformity of the

or light which appears be

hind the moon during the total darkness, ought to be particularly observed Whether or not it surrounds the moon's disc uniformly, or is brighter in one part of it than in another whether it seems to emanate in rnys from behind the moon, the distance to which the light extends Sometimes flame-like, or rose colored protuberances of irregular shape have been soen along the edge of the moon wiih tho naked oye their form, color, and position, if visible, should bo carefully noticed. These protuberances are as cribed to clouds floating at a very great height in the solar atmosphere. Many of the appearances can be observed by any army field glass or common opera glass. It would be well enough to noiice what, if any, brght stars may be visible during the darkness, also the general appearance of the landscape as the shadow of the moon is coming and leaving, also the effect produced on animals. These and many other things are mentioned as worthy of notice, both by the scientific and unscientific observer, by Prof. Coffin in his "suggestions for the observing of the total eclipse of tbe son."

Fromtho Indianapolis Journal.] For several weeks past, all kinds of ieewiel stories have been circulating in spiritual- ^now circles about* the extraordinary correa-ftbiag. ItaMJaffe# pondence which has been carried on through the medium of Mrs. Keigwm, between citizens of this city and th®e? who have "gone over on the other siaeA regular mail line between this world and the next, has been going on at a rapid rate, and branch office h« ton established in this city to facilitate ^business.

Quite a number of communications have oeen forwarded, and promptly answered^ The manner in which this corresponds SfiTTaiFcc once has been carried on is this: "Hie writer in -this city would -enclose a lett«r

She claimed that all of the tfritiDg WM ictooe on .th* slate, and transcribed therefrom by her husband. The correspondence was going on at si livelv rate, when some one suggested to j£r."Keigw'm that envelopes sealed in the ordinary manner were not impervious to the eentlo influence of a little jet of steam, or even a little w»rm Water. Mr. Keigwin at once wrote to the correspondent in this city, reque-ting him in future to seal with wax all loiters sent to spirits. This was'a clincher, and being done in apparent good faith, excited a good deal of curiosity among thinking men, who desired to investigate the matter, and learn, if possible, whether such a thing could be, and was really done. Two letters were written by gentlemen who re^ sidein this city, and given to Mr. W. A.

Bnfdshaw, .Register in Ragkroptcy of this District, to be forwarded by the United.States mail to Mrs. Keigwm. The letters were enclosed in tho ordinary buff envelopes,-from a box containing sevteraP-b and redV porticm'of whioh'-can ba seen at Mr. Bradshaw's office, in Talbott's block, The letters were soalsd with red wax and Jlr. Bradshaw's private eefcl, his initials, impressed upon it.

The letters were forwarded several daysajo, and considerable anxiety, has been felt to hoar the answers.

We are permitted ta print ope of the letters which was sent, «nd the answer received. We withhold tlja names, but have the original letters ifc our posSessic which can be seen by the doubtful.

I*DIAKAPOLIS, July 3 let, 1860. -i

My Dear Mother:

I am very desirous to know if it is possible to have communication with our dear ones who have passed to that other and better world. If so, iu answer to this, will you tell mo something of that spirit-land, and whether the boys are with you, giving their names and in which spheres you are all in respectively? Also, give me any other information of tneDds and relatives you may d9em best to communicate to

Your affectionate Son,

Yestorday the letter was returned with the seal unbroken, and with it an answer. This, and a letter written by another genr tleman, was received at the same time by Mr. Bradshaw. The writers of the letters and Major J. W. Gordon were present in the room when the letters were received. A careful examination showed that tho seals had not been touched, but that the envelope bad been opened by cutting off" one.end, and, after reading the letter, closing it up with mucilagb. By pressing tho edges of tbe envelope together, both of them came open and developed the fraud.

The following is a copy of the answer to the foregoipg letter: Yes, my dear son, it is possible to have communication with us. We are not dead, but gone before, and waiting patiently for you all to come to me and meet us here. I can't describe the spirit land to you, for it is beyond description. Yes, the dear boys are all with qje. We are in tbe sixth sphere. I will write you a long letter very soon. "Your mother,

R.J, N-TI

LUCY

We give as our authority for tbe foregoing statement in regard to the manner of opening the letters, Major J, W. Gordon, W. A-. Bradshaw, ana the other gentlemen who were present when tbe letters were received. We are also informed by a formerjresident of Jeffersonville, and an acquaintance of Mrs. Keigwin, that she has frequently boa3ted of the ease with which she was deceiving people, and laughed at the simplicity,of her victims. The Keigwins have succeeded in deluding many people through their representation that they were above taking any consideration financially, for the! revelations made by (ban, but as they have been open to donations, it can road ily be seen that they have an eye ultimately to the dollars and cents.

Now, it so happened that the deceased lady's name was not Oliver, but one resembling it somewhat when written. In general terms the answer to the letter may be regarded, as a success, but in detail it failed hugely.

In another letter which purported to be from a deceased wife, the complaint was made that it was sealed so closely that she could scarcely get into it to read it but a slight compression showed that the entire end.(hadjjbeon cut off with some sharp instrument, and afterwards sealed with mucilage.
