Republican voters of the Secoad

Ward should not fail to attend the Convention at Bust's Carpenter Sliop this evening for the selection of a candidate to fill the existing vacancy in our City Council. The office is an Important one, and should be filled by a man capable of

advancing the interests of this growing city and willing to devote time to the varied duties that will devolve upon him. It is the plain duty of the .Republicans of that Ward to nominate such a man, and than make his election sure by going to

the polls and voting for him-

THE

Indianapolis Journal ot yester

The gigantic 'financial plan' that Mr. VOOB« BEKB is preparing, is said to be looking to that end, and is DAWIEL'S bid for the support of BRICK POMIBOT and the rebels as the next 'Red Hot' candidate for the Presidency."

summer jaunt to the distant shores Alaska, to enjoy relaxation and the re» pose of unofficial life amid the icebergs of bis new purchase. It does not distinctly appear that he aims at further acquisitions in that region, but if the Esquimaux living near the North Pole have any desire to dispose of it, he will no doubt be ready to open negotiations and report to the government.

awaiting trial. The first is

against an officer of marines who, for tbo slightest offenses, had tbe men of his command "bucked and gagged," tied up by the thumbs, placed under shower baths, and forced to walk manacled with ballg and chains for a day at a time. The other two cases are against the late officers of the United States steamers Pawnee and Nipric. The latter charges will probably be tried in some of the civil courts, i"d the testimony that will be elicited will give the publio sotuo needed information as to how the national blue jackets are treated by their officers.

terview between the President and the con. serv&live Republicans of Mississippi, he said that "he desired to see the payment ot the public debt secured, and the integlity and honor of the nation rendered inviolate, and when this was accomplished he would be satisfied This is a plain platform and a good one- He wishes hi^ great work as a soldier completed by the ..enforcement of appropriate legislation! and the protection of life, liberty and property assured in every portion of the

Union. Regarding the debt as the pe. cuniary price of the nation's triumph, htclearly recognizes the fact that the vindi. cation of the national honor, as well as jus. tice and expediency, require its faithful redemption.

Qtfl or two highly interesting facts are brought out in tfie account of Pupllc Charities of the City of New York, pup lished in the Tribune- The Commissioners of Charities and Corrections hav* been honorably distinguished for their moderation in making estimates for their annual expenditure yet out of the reasonable sums appropriated for their use they have actually saved during the last four years half a million of dollars This is a phenomenon in municipal ad ministration which deserves perpetual commemoration. With these savings they have built asylums, hospitals, and very heavy works of improvement on Blackwell's Islaad, established the Mor. gue, bought or built three steamboats, and done many other seusitile and useful things

Conflagration at Gefle, Sweden—8,000 Persons Uonseless—loss £500.000.

An appaling disaster has fallen upon the usually busy and thriving town of Getle, in Sweden. On Saturday, July 10, afire broke out in a carpenters' shop in the centre of the town, and a strong gale from tbe west blowing at the time, the lire spread rapidly, and in a few hours the whole of that part of the town which is situated on tbe north side of the river was burnt down

The loss is estimated at above ±500,000, and many of tbe working classes are, as i» usually the rase, uninsured. Committees for assisting the sufferers had been immediately formed in Sweden, and all having business connections with Gefle, or otherwise taking an interest in Sweden had been Invited to come forward with their aid to the same object.

A good joke is told of a young man who attended asocial circle afewevenings since. The conversation turned on Caliiornta and getting cb. One of the young ladies quietly relied that be had better gather up the brains, as he evidently «tood in more need of that article .than •gold. Tom subs'.ded.

A slander iz like a hornet, If yu kRnt kill it dead the fust bio, yu better not strike at it.

Politeness is a Bhrewd way folks haz ov flattering themselves. I make this distinksbun between char akter and repwiathun—reputashun is what the world thinks ov us, charakter is what tbe world knows ov us. "What a ridikilus farce "it is to be continually on the hunt for peace and quiet.

No man ever yet increased his reputashun bicontradikting lies. Anxiety alwus steps on itself.

Silence, like darkness, izgenerally safe, Thar iz only two things that I kno ov that a man wont brag ov, one is lieing and tulher iz jealousy.

It takes br&nes tew make a smart man but good luck often makes a famous one Opinyuns are like other vegetables worth just what they will fetch.

I think most men had rather be charged with malice than with making a blunder.

Love .cuts up all sorts ov monkey shines, it makes a fool sober, and a wise man frisky.

I don't believe in total depravity, every man haz sumthing in him to show that God made him.

I suppose that one reazon whi the "road to ruin" is broad, iz tew accomadate the great amount ov travel in thatdirekshun.'

I tbiuk I had rather her a man brag about himself, than tew hear him brag ov sum one else—for think like vanity a ladle belter than do sickofansy.

A humbug iz like a bladder, good for nothing till it iz biowed up, and then ain't good for nothing after it Iz pricked.

A bigg noze iz sed tew be a sign ov genius—if a man's genius lays In biz nose, should say the sign was a good one.

Vanity iz seldom malishous. A woman (like an echo), will have the last word.

Put an Englishman into the garden of Eden, and he would find fault with the whole blassted consarn—put a Yankee in, and he will see whare he could alter it to advantage—put an Irishman in, and he would want tew boss the thingput a Duchman, in, and be would proceed at once to plant cabbage.

When a man iz sqandering hiz estate, even those who are getting it, call him a phool.

Men mourn for what they have lost— wimmin, for wbatthey hain't got. I judge ov a man's. virtew entirely bi his phasions*—It iz- a great deal eager tew be a good dove than decent sarpont.

There are many ways to find out how brave and bpw honest a man may be, but there aisi't fib way to find out tbe extent ov his vanity:

A lie iz like a cat it never cums te yu in a straight line. Nature iz a kind mother. Sh9 couldn't well afford to make us perfekt, and she made us blind to our feelings

Steddy the heart if yu want to learn human nature there ain't nohman nature in a maa's head.

Friendship is simply the gallantry of aelMnterest. Beware ov the man with half-shut eyes —he ain't dreaming.

Experience makes more timid men 'than it das wise ones. Advice is a drug in tbe market the supply alwus exceeds the demand.

One of the safest and most successful tallents I know ov is to be a good listener.

Pools are the whet-stones ov socity. Better make a weak man your enemy than your friend.

Curiosity is the lnstinotov wisdom. Thoze who becum disgusted and withdraw from-the world, musn't foreit one thing, that tbe world will forgit them, a lone time before they will forget the world.

Put man down (for me) as a vain and selfish critter, all bis talk and ackshuns to the contrary, notwithstanding nevertheless to wit, verily, amen. "Wise men luff everg good charite thoy kan git. Laffingisonly a weakness in phools.

I giv the world credit for a grate deal more honesty than it can show. "Whenever I find a real handsum woman engaged in the "wimmins' rights bizzness," then am going to take mi hat under mi arm and iine the procession.

Gratitude iz a debt, and like all other debts, iz paid bekause we are obliged to, not bekause we love to.

Praize that ain't deserved is no better than slUnder. There is three kinds of phools in this world, the natural ones, the common, every day phool, and tho daghm phool.

Shocking Accident at Long Branch. On Saturday last Mr. Kerr, from Paisley, Scotland, arrived at Long Branch, with his wife and daughter, and took rooms at the Continental Hotel. Yesterday morning he went out to batbe, and while swimming back to the shore, he became exhausted and called for help. Two gentlemen near by tried to reach him,but the undertow was too strong for them to render any aid. Thomas Giltens, a waiter at the hotel, then rushed to the rescue, and at the risk of his own life he succeeded in bringing the unfortunate man on dry land, but in an unconscious condition. Dr. Lewis, tbe resident physician of the iJtetson House, at once applied every known means at resuscitation, but after an hour's perseverance life remained extinct. An inquest will be held to-day.— The grief of tbe widow and daughter at this unexpected bereavement may be imagined. Tn reward the brave waiter a subscription was immediately raised, and on behalf of the subscribers Alderman Farley and Messrs. Hubbard and McCafferty will present him with the amount contributed this evening/—£/. V- Times, Attg. 3.

A Saratoga exquisite is profoundly enamored of the male type of the beautiful bloude, and sets himself up as a model thereof. He duly elaborates his hair, and parts it exactly in the middle, carrying his bat in his hand from fear of disarranging the work of the harbor, and goes through the formula of the glove exercise and dress-parade on Major Lei and's piazza with astonishing precision. A fearful suspicion as to the identity of sex is the only draw-back to the amusement of spectators.

Can B'iory believes negro nhi That question used to vex the 1 ptflilio mind. Among the things determiaeftfby the late war was the principle that a black man is not necessarily a liar^JMLCl the African has been fegalized into a competent witness. Now comes the queeticn. Can a Chinaman be believed under oath? No, says California. Yes, saj% Idaho, and admits him as a witness accordingly*

Now your Chinaman la a fearful Mol» ter, & heathen of the heathen/* "worshipper of Joes. His scheme of salvation a a simple one. Ho constructs a hideous Jldl Crow out of bamboo this he blackebs, puts in glass beads for eyes, sets it up in a temple, and calls it tbe devil—which is the only gleam of intelligence shown in the whole proceeding. Then poor John Chinaman goes down upon his marrow bones before his bamboo *£Eair, and willows upon the ground in an ecstaoy of adoration. What is to be dons with' such a creature as this when he oomes into a court of justice to tell the«tralb, the whole truth, and notMog but toe truth?. It fs of no use to swear him the four Evangelists. You mijiit as w^ll swear bim by Apollo, God of MuslO pr Thor, God of Thunder, or Hamlet, King of Denmark. He would take ail three oaths, and then lb- The-ittgesToas jlal* ciary of Idaho,

Voweyer, have fixed him.

They have dived into the phUoBophr of

Confucius^hito tbe holy took* of ID to the Chang-Lung of the Buddhists. They have found that an oath accompah ied with the proper Chinese ceremonies will strike terror into tbe inmost beatt bf tbe native of the Flowery Eingdo though he may make light of the tian Scriptures, burnt paper and defd rooster will wring the very troth fropn his secret soul. When, therefore, the cajM of Ah Choy and Alt S«1B, charged with the murder of All Son, was called the other day at Silver city, and ten Ohintmen came forward to testify ta the mkt ter, a most singular scene o«carteiS.*"Bring me rooster, a saucer,. and some yellow tissue paper,"quoth the magistrate '•and prepare tbe sacrificial knife?' The Sheriff did his duty and unsheathed Us bowie. The jurat was written upon the yellow paper, a match applied, and tlie oath floated skyward in a little cloud of smoke, a testamentary witness to the truth. Qff went tbe rooster's heftd, witb a squeak of remonstrance from the unhappy biped, the saucer was dash^d upon the ground and broken ihto titis, typical of what would happen to John Chinaman if he told a lie, and the first witness was deolared duly sworn. The ceremony was repeated with every witness. Ten roosters died under the Sheriff's knife, that ten Chinamen might tell the truth ten bits of yellow paper burst into the blaze ten good white oncers became broken crockery.

We are moved to consider the possible effect of all this on our own judicial aystern. Who knows how soon wemay have to try a Chinaman in our new Court House or if not a Chinaman, then some, other pagan—some Polynesian percliaBce, who recognizes the solemnity of an oath only when ft is accompanied bythe ,|]i' rifice of a kangaroo How are yeu ev to swear such a heathen as that Who will repair to 4he wilds of Australia to procure the judicial beast

The aticfent Greeks used to offer up young bullocks, and some of the numerous rac& Who are emigrating to our shores may have adopted that form of oath, in which event cattle yards will have to be constructed in tbe Park, somewhere between the City Hall and the Post Office, which Mr. Boutwell is going to build in spite of the King that tried to prevent it.

But, taking the matter in its simplest form, and .granting that nothing more complicated than roosters, saucer, and tissue paper is to be called for by way of sanction to an oath, still even these will entail their little incoxi' veniencos. Hen coops will have to be knocked up in the Special Term rooms, and the tax levies swelled by items for broken crockery, yellow paper, and chicken feed. Our country Judges could in fact employ their leisure time during the summer to advantage in raising fowls for tbe purpose. Judge Lott, for instance, might find it an agreeable change from bobbing for eels, and besides, could turn an honest peony by supplying tbe Supreme Court for the Second Judicial District. In fact, as soon as tbe Chinese emigration has fairly set in, we shall look for great changes in this direction.—initio York Sun.
