Beallj, that ia a valuable pirca of information I "A rock to be split only by gunpowder"! We bad supposed that "a rock" might be "split" by wedge*. We hare known such a thing to be dooe by altro-glycerine, and the same thing ia •aid to have been dooe by that remarkable chemical preparation known by tbe name of gun cotton. But as "tbe Congregational Church" ia the "rock" that "Ia to be split" tathii case, "gunpowder'' will prebably be aa severe a centrifugal •gent aa "a decent regard for tbe opinions of mankind" would permit a humane operator to employ.
As our Congregational friends claim •IBnity with Plymouth Bock, it may be that piece of granite which is to be the aubject of the proposed "aplit" The pieces would find a ready sale as relica among the many thouaands of tbe descendants of the Puritans scattered throughout the land.

Chicago Republican mentions a
curious instance of the inconsistency of the very men who bad been instrumental in the passage of the Marsachosetts prohibitory liquor law, that was exhibited a few days since, at the recent dinner of the Harvard Law School. At that dinner there were assembled Judges of the Supreme and Superior Courts of the State Judges of the United States and city Courts, protninent lawyers and officers in all the civil departmenta of the State government: and when the viands had been discussed and the cloth (figuratively speaking) had beeh removed, every one ofjlhese judges, lawyers and officialsi sworn to observe an a enforce the laws in the commonwealth, repeatedly aided ia the violation of a statute, the Executive signature to which was hardly dry. To be sure, these magnates cannot be said to hkve directly broken the law but they did so it,directly aa somebody muat have sold thetn the liquor they drank. In the eyea of the law they stood in the position of receivers of stolen property. Laws which are broken immediately by the persons who made them, simply make men hypocrite*. The fact
article on tbe manufacture of
iron, which we publish to day from the Indianapolis Journal of Saturday, is quite applicable to this city and vicinity as to the Capital City. We have no doubt that Indianapolis can profitably engage in the manufacture of that great commercial staple, but the g,reat advantages wbich Terre Haute possesses, in her closer proximity to the sourcos from which the coal and iron are obtained, will enable us to manufacture it so much cheaper than that city, that our manufacturer* can make a good profit by selling at the Indianapolig ccst. This is certainly the case at present, bat the opening up of contemplated lines of railway may have a tendency to equalice the relative advantagea of the two oities. At all events the field for enterprise is broad enough for all, and w* shall not regret the prosperity that may come to any oity through the development of
the measureless resources that lie hidden I

in a letter to
tbe Boston Journal, estimates our sur plus revenue for the financial year just closed at $60,000,000, and for the financial year ending June 30, 1870, at $100,000, 000 or more. "Aa most of the surplus," he says, "must be devoted to buying up bonds, these will soon advance to par in gold in the European market, and then it will be easy to change our 6-£0 six per cent, bonds into along loan at 4$ per cent, exempt from taxation, which would be readily taken by trustees, savings banks, etc. If there is any d.ffioulty then the bondholders can ba paid in gold at par for by that time be estimates that we can resume specie payments, at least to that extent."
Cincinnati Chronicle, a very con
sistent and able Bepublican paper, suggests that our Government, without intervening in the affairs of Cubs, sbeuld officially express to the Spanish authori ties its abhorrence of the reported atrocities committed against Cuban patriots, in violation of civilised usages. A moral protest of this sort would undoubtedly have weight in arresting these cruelties! and it would fitly come from a nation situated like ours in regard to the Cuban contest. There need be no waiting for sworn testimony to prove the reprehensi ble conduct. It is a matter beyond reasonable doubt, and could with propriety be referred to in diplomatic correspond* ence, subject to the contingency of an official denial of the reports. If untrue, it ia for the interest of Spain to have an opportunity for a circumstantial and formal denial.
THE MANUFACTURE OF IRON.
Another Statement of the Advantages of Indiana.
The Extent of the Coal Beds and of the Deposit of Ore.
The Facilities for Securing the Ore, the Flux and the Coal.
From ths IndianapoiUi Journal.] There can be no question of the fact that the future of Indianapolis, and indeed of the whole State, depends much upon the manner in which use is made of the advantages at our doors for the manufacture of iron. In former articles we have endeavored to show these up to cap talists, and although there is nothing new to be said, still upon the question, "Will it pay it wil 1 be of interest to iterate what has been already published.
Three things are necessary for the man ufacture of iron. Given ore, coal and lime, and the production of iron any place in tbe world is not a problem. The advantage lies with the locality that can bring theae materials together the most easily added to the difference in the in trinsic quality of the ingredients them aelvea. There are indidental matters to be conaidered, but the three things we have stated are the most important— These secured, the others are easily obtained.
First aft to ore: The common varieties use in the West are the Lake Suprerior ore and that from the Iron Moun tain of Missouri. The experience of the iron makers of Brasil and vicinity is in favor of the Iron Mountain, aa with In
that all tbe clubs composed of the "young bloods" of Massachusetts dispense liquors I diena coal, it yields ab ut two per cent, of all kinds, has created a feeling of en mity on the part of the mechanics and labjr. ing men, toward a class who contrive by the aid of superior social position to do that which tbe law prohibits in others.
more of iron. Still tbe Superior ore is most excellent. To Chicsgo there are now operating three lines: via La Payette, Kokomo and Anderson. Fourth and fifth lines are in contemplation by way of Danville, Illinois, and Delphi
These are the roads over which theSupe- I

State, large beds ot bog ore oopdr, corer ed by several feet of peat and swamp muck. This ore contains from thirty to forty per cent, of iron, ia easily reduced, acd is almost entirely free from sulphur or other hurtful impurities.
Secondly as to ciai: It ia in this that Indiana excels. The Journal has so often and so fuUy presented ibe oTeesree ing superiority of our block coal for the manufacture of iron, that we shall not repeat any of tbe statements ot^er (ban to say tfcat the fact is conceded tbit no such coal exists in tbe world so far as has y^jt been discovered. Here ia one great advantage. It requires three tona of coal t« work one ton of ore, and, of course the transportation of eoalls three times
waukee. We have the coal tbey bave tbe ore. We can ship the ore' by dirtc* lines, take the coal from tbe mines at our bond, while they are compelled to movfe three times as much as we, to obtain tfafc same result It is true that Southeri Illinois has some good coal, but still thfc best coal used at tha Iron Mountain furnaces does not at all compare in working quality with our block coal, as the results of furoace tests heretofore published show beyond controversy. The quality of thjs Indiana coal established, tbe second point of interest is, that the supply ia inexhaustible. We have about eight thousand square miles of coal lands. Alinedrawh from the Ohio river, near the mouth of Ojl creek, in Crawford county, running northwardly through the counties of Orange, Lawrence, Monroe, Owen, Puinam, Parke, Fountain and Warren, to the Illinois line, near the southwestern corner of Benton county, will define the eastern margin of the coal fields.
Of the block coal the pamphlet of Prof. Brown thusspeaki: "The seam from which this superior quality of coal is obtained, varies in thickness from three to five feet It will be found along tbe wbole eastern margin of the coal region from the Ohio river to the Illinois line, a distance of about one hundred and fifty miles. It may vary somewhat in quality and quantity, but in these respects is tbe most uniform of nil our coal seams. Dipping westward with a descent of from twenty to thirty feet per mile, it passes under tbe co*l seams and other formation lying above, and outoroppir to the west of it It may be reached at a depth, varying from surfaic out-crop, to two hundred feet, over a belt of country from fifteen to twenty miles wide, and one hundred and fifty miles long, within the boundaries of this State."
We alao have an abundanee of fateoals for tbe purpose of fuel. Tbe coal for heating can be laid at our furnace doors as cheaply as it can be obtained at any iron manufactory in the country.
Thirdly as to lime: The lime used at Pittsburg is so lean that it requires 1,900 pounds to flux one ton of ore, while of the stone obtained in Indiana in quantities beyond any exhaustion, 765 pounds, or less than one-half, answers the same purpose. Briefly, then, here are the advantages of Indianapolis: Competition and certainty in the shipment of standard ores accessible coal, requiring no coking1, and rich lime advantages in no point in the country can at all compare. We have before igiten the figures to ahow the act ual difference in the working betweeq a furnace in Indianapolis and one in Pennsylvania, but our purpose now is to do no more than present compactly the natural facts upon which this disparity of profit is baaed. In the matter of labor, and a few minor nonessentials, older places, like Pittsburgh, have the advantage over us but these will disappear in time, as the number of our manufactories increase and the constant employment of skillful laborers becomes assured.— Put the factories and the furnaces here, open the places for labor where it may be employed with certainty, and in no particular can we be overreached. Starting even then, with tbe Pennsylvania or Missouri factories, we still have the great advantage in the non-coking of our coal, and the difference between the shipment of the ore and coal to the poiot of manufacture. Having gone over this grouhd, we shall leave the question for the presort, only calling the attention of capitalists and manufacturers to our statement, asking not that they be accepted without proof, but challenging an examination into every point urged. The report ol Professor E. T. Cox, the pamphlet of Professor T. Brown, and better than all, tbe experiences of the furnace men now engaged in working, can be summoned to sustain or dispute our stale ments. At another time we shall say more of the merchantable quality of the iron we produce, as well as of its adaptability for manufacturing, adducing the testimony and acts of intelligent machinists and railroad builders. Tbe result of the re-opening of the White Biver Iron Mill will then be known, and tbe opinion of its new superintendent, an old Youngs town iron worker, will be valuable.
