Jity 23.]

Probably the'mdst astounding surgical ^pe?atioh' ^ver performed on the American Continent has recently been made in this city by -Dr. G. D. Bee be. The citctfmstances, as we gather them from the hul band of the patient, are briefly these: Mrs. J.

Child?, residing at Lee Center, Hh, came to this city on a visit, and was stopping on Sangamon streA. Whiter then she became aware that an old rupltlre, from which ehe bad suffered from time time for several years, was likely to give her trouble, and summoned medical aid. The physician first called. regarded it a case of "wind colic," but his treatment not relieving the suffering of the unfortunate woman, he was dismissed and Pr. L. Dodge was summoned, who, recognizing the true state of the case, requested that a surgeon be called and Dr.' Beebe was accordingly sent for. A careful examination of the case revealed the fact that the intestine involved in the rupture had already mor tified, and to allow this to remnin would inevitably destroy the woman's life. Hi therefore, decided to remove so much 01 the intestine as had undergone decompo sition, and, by securing the extremities of the sound intestine, to restore at length the natural passages, and thus preserve the unfortunate lady's life. Assisted by Drs. L. Dodge, J. S. Mitchell, and A. G. Beebe, this dangerous and difficult question was accordingly performed, and four feet six inches of the intestine were removed from the patiaat's body, and may be seen, preserved in alcohol, in Dr. Beebe's office. 'Die operation completed, the abdomen was carefully stitched up the patient enjoined to preserve perfect quiet, 4M»d to Abstain from solid food.— Thirteen days have now elapsed, and, as-

totiisbing as it may seem, the good la baa well nigh recovered, being now *,..
