A Earning Shame-

There have been few more shatneful scenes ever witnessed among any civil' iZtsd people than was presented in ,tbe Criminal Court on Wednesday eveniug upon the reading of the verdict, in the Q.se ofOUVKR A. MORGAN for the murder of tH.it PATKI. At such a time when a jury were giving their solemn and awful sentence of dea'.b against fallow creature, however guilty he might be regarded. no man whose nature was not essentially brutal, no man, who had not in him too much of the material of which murderers are made, would hava dreamed of breaking in upon the Berdnity, dignity and solemnity befitting the oocrtaoa.witb anything like levity. And yet how was it there A correct report of the scene •ays: "Immediately on the readingof the verdict, the most tumultuous and decided applause, by clapping. of hands and stamping of feet, arose. This disgraceful pro ceeding was promptly checked by Judge Grain, who instantly rose to hu ieei »nd wiih uplifted hand wafLed the audieuco against repetition oitbesame."#

Have we indeed failen^upon times in which the highest, most awfully solemn duty that can devolve upon ahuman being, that of deciding upon the life of another, is to be discharged amid "turnup tuous applause," "clapping of hands" and "stamping of feet?' "We know not •nd would not know the authors of such an ouiToge, for it Is not peas»nt to be compelled to despise one's fellow cHlaens* •nd the man wtraWrer his name or stetion, who could Join in that "applause,'' should be despised by every honorable Bind. Indead, if not Utterly lost to every generous and manly feeling, b«' will hate himself to the verge of suicide. The vengeance that oannot.be satiated with a verdict of death, solemnly pronounced and Curried Into effect with due regard to all the proprieties of such an •vaot,!s a sentiment that belongs rather to demons than men.
