Since those achievements we have been in almost constant telegraphic comunica' tion with Europe, via Yalentia Bay.

Great «s was tbe expense attending the manufacture and submerging of the first cables, the profits arising from their workisgB have been enormous, and thel charges so high as to place the ocean wires beyond the general reaoh of all not engaged in large commercial operations netting heavy profits, and the enterprising American newspaper publishers.— There has long been need of another ocean oable, and this want has been suppliod in a most unostentatious manner^ Again tb»-Grg»t "Ba3tgrn-"ba8 tTftVeffied the vasty deep, uncoiling, as she steamed, a wire that now binds France and America together. Tbe American terminus of the new telegraph lino is the French Island of St.Tietre, off the coast of Newfountflind. From this point it will be •onneoted with the United States by means of other submerged wires, landing on our ooast at Duxbury, Mass. From the latter town the land lines will stretch away to Boston, and from the "hub" the paths of the lightning courier radiate over th^.length and breadth of the continent,'

SATS of personal governments are

drawing to an end with a rapidity that must astonish the crowned beads and their adherents. We .may now, without fear of being laughed at, speak of tbe aristocracies of Europe as effete. Tbe British Houso of Lords is certainly In a more humiliating position than over was a con-clavo-of herediury^Iogislators in tho world's history. -The Commons hector it the journals scold, chido and threaten it by turns, while the masses laugh at it.— Louis KAPOLBON, only a few years ago, regarded as the. jeauscitajfOr and preserver of irresponsible" crown sceptres, has been fairly ^pushed ta the wall. and presents a pitiably if not mournful spectacle of royalty in a tremor. The "Nephew cf my Uncle/' like a boy in the dark, whit ties to keep up his courage but his melO' dy lacks beartiaess, and is woefully out of time and tune and while he twists the air with affected carelessness between his lips, his knees shake with fear. 'The flames spread with almostfnconceivable rapidity, leaping from tank to tank and from car to car, and befofo anything could be donel: to remove the cars, almost the entire train was on fire. Nothing remained but the wheels ..and axT89, and iron~ and twisted while all tbe traQkt &?j» distance ot a hundred and fifty yards looked as if they had experienced a visitation of Sherman's bummers. The ties were all burned out, and the rails were wandering over tho blackened groujd^like hueeierpents.

The total loss is estimated at from forty to fifty thousand dollars, upon which there was no insurance whatever. Fifteen cara loaded with oil were consumed, the total amount being about thirteen hundred tmrrels, worth seven dollars per barrel,"maktng hSfefly ten tbousand dollars. Eight cars loaded with coal were bfaroed. aud about twenty empty cars. The coai continued to burn through the entire night. Eighty ,or iajndred oor&s of Wood, piled beside the track, were also destroyed. The, loss upon the cars, which were valued at from six to seven hundred dollars each, will be about $25,000.
