On Monday evening the Beta Tbeta Pi Society fraternity held thair annual reunion. Great disappointment was experienced when tbe annoantSemanr-was made that Dr. Tbe pbilua Parvin of In. dianapolis, tbe orator of the evening, could not be present, by reason of sickness. Mr. J. Homer Bothwell, of IlUnoisj ^irered an opening -address welcoming the non-resident. Betas to the association of the fraternity. Mr. of Bloomfleld, next read an address* to tbe ordfer, and tjol. J. B. Black delivered a poem composed for the occasion which sparkled with' wit patriotism and humor. The exercises were intersperse® and enlivened with music. After the delivery of the address, the fraternity repaired to the Phi lomathian Hall were a lxjuntEful collation was served. It is needless to say that tbe conviviality extended Into the small heirs of the night. One of the most interest ing feature® connected with the university during the last year is the written ex antinationr. AH the examinations so far as practicable are required to be conduct-

This order was rigidly en

forced, and has bee» instrumental in im proving the scholarship in all the classes. These written examinations are carSfully filed away and are examined by a Com mittee appointed "by the Board of Trustees specially for that purpose. The committee of examination have gone through their work with a great deal of labor and pains-taking, and have, with few exceptions, been gratified with tbe thoroughness of the instruction, and the creditable character of the examinations

GRBBNCASTLE, IND., June 30,1869 Stopping ovor here last night, about seven o'clock in the evening, I tlirew my self into the current of humanity which flowed in the direction of Aebury University, and Boon found myself in the midst Of professors, student, alumni and friends drawn together to hear ttje annual ad dress before thd"Platonian and Philolog cal Literary Societies

Fully an hour before the time for the exercises to begin, the chapel was crow' ded until every available inch of sitting and standiug room was occupied. All the windows had been removed, but even this did not prevent its being as hot as —the tropics, or that furnace we read of that was heated ''seven times hotter The orator of the evening was the Hon D. "W. Yoorhees, of your city. Dr. Bowman came near introducing him as the flev. ——, but took it back. He came literally "heralded by trump and thun der," and as all the aisles were impassable, he was put through 11 window and landed oa the platform. His theme was "Tne 'Mind." He was eloquent as usual, and drew many glowing pictures of the on ward inarch and the many brilliant achievements of mind. 1

After tbe conclusion of the address the jOrchestra favored us with the "Anvil kjhorus" done up in good taste.

George Xiansing Taylor, of New York jCity, then read a poem entitled ''Atlan kis." It Was a creditable effort, and was "well receiVed.

The attendance of visitors it good, the hotels being more than full. Work has been commenced on the new University buildings. A big hole has been dag and drained, and here opera tions have stopped for tbe present on ac eount of the failure cf Putnam county to come to time with her $20,000 promised
