polls Sentinel we learn Professor Cox, our energetic and learned State Geologist, has just returned from a tour of examination in the rich mineral regions of Greene county. In his explorations, Professor Cox traced the Brazil block coal to Parke county on the north range, and as far south as Worthington. He believes that the vein extends farther eaoh way, but has not as yet made any further explorations than between the points mentioned. The Professor yesterday received a fine specimen of block coal from CRHn sta-" tion, on the line of the Evansville and Crawfordsville Railroad.
He fonnd iron ore and bituminous coal, from six to eight feet in thickness, in abundance, in Greene county. He has net yet analyzed bis specimens from Greene and Clay counties, and is therefor# unprepared to give us any of the details of bis labors during the past two weeks.— He intends to make a geological survey of all the counties in the State in course of time, and is at present getting up a map of Greene and Clay oountiea, showing the range and extent of block and bituminous coals also the position of coah, iron on and furnaces in those coua». ties.

The Mayor informed the members, on assembling, that he had called the council together to ascertain if some arrangements cannot be made with the County Sheriff for keeping city priso oners, the city calaboose being wholy un suited for the purpose.
Sheriff Stewart was present and on being called on, said he was not prepared to toake a proposition, but that the city authorities might go on and use the jail and after giving it a trial he would be able to submit a proposition at the next meeting. He said he had written to Indianapolis to ascertain the charge and rules in operation there, but had received no answer.
Mr. Dowling offered the following: Resolved, That the city prisoners shall from time to time, be placed in the custo. dy of the Sheriff of the county, to be fed and lodged, until the further action the Council and that a Committee of three be appointed by the Mayor to con fer with the Sheriff, ascertain bis lowest terms of keeping said prisoners, and re port the result to tbe next meeting of the Council.
Also, that said Committee bo
requested to ascertain if a proper room can be had for a police head quarters in the jail building, and on what terms
The resolution was adopted, and Messrs Dowling, Fouls and Maltox appointed said committee.
A cotamunication was received from the committee inviting the Council to at» tend the celebration of American Independence on Saturday. On motion of Mr. O'Connoll it was accepted.
Also an invitation to attend the German celebration of the same anniversay on Sunday. On motion of Mr. Dowling. it was accepted.
LOVE, COURTSHIP
AND
MARRIAGE.—
To-night Dr. Simms will deliver the last lecture of his course in this city, at Pence's Hall, and having in the previous lecttirts' "devoted himself to the laws affecting the well-being of the physical man, it is eminently proper that the learned Doctor should select for his con oluding lecture, the interesting and allimportant subject of "Love, Courtship and Marriage." No other subject fraught with such momentous consequences to the human race. Mankind have "loved, coorted. and parried" since the world began, and they will do so while time laBte and the important question suggests itself^- "when should I love, and how I" What object should my courtship have in view, and who should I marry Theso questions can be resolved by Science, and Doctor Simms will give them a conclusive answer to-night.
Not the least important feature of his lecture will be his advice to married people, with infallible receipts for retaining to old age, the warm and devoted love of youth Indifferent husbands and careless wives should not fail to attend. The Doc tor will describe the peculiar stylos of courting in different countries, and give some rich and amusing illustrations of his interesting^ theme* Let those who have passed the Tubicon of marriage, those who are on its verge, and those who would like to be, all attend and enjoy the fun that is sure to abound at Pence's Hall tonight.
This wiii be the last day for securing charts, or examining the large and beautiful collection ol paintings and curiosities in the Hall. No one should forget to visit them.
VCCAL CULTURE.—Mr.
G.
A. Hartung
begs leave to announce that he intends opening classes of Vocal Music, with Organ and Violin accompaniment, at Pence's Hall, commencing on Tuesday, July 6th, from 9 to 11 A. M. Days of instruction, every Tuesday and Friday. Terms, two dollars per month. j30 dlw.

MARSEILLES
QUILTS,

2b the Editor of tk Express': Tou were pleased to publish an anonymous article in your paper of to-day over the misnomer of "Fatr Play" intended as a personal assault upon myself. The friends of tbe Normal School do not intend to make this a personal war. The animus of the article in question, by an anonymous person, who acknowledges the forces of tbe "ideas" of tbe Journal editorial which be bas been pleased to attribute to Mr. Morrison, is tco obvious to need any attempt of mine to demonstrate.— These "ideas" seem to have accomplished their purpose. Neither the animus of that anonymous publication, nor tbe personal attack upon me (by attacking my supposed rhetoric or supposed ideas") can divert tbe public from the issues involved. These issues this Board have to meet.—
If any one desires to know what I have to say touching the preliminaries of this case, about the Normal School Board, or about the question of electing a Faculty, he will find my letters in the hands of Mr. B. C. Hobbs, Chairman of the subcommittee of tbe Normal School Board— tbe sub-committee appointed May 13th, toj nominated a President and Faculty.
One fact, it may be important for the public to know, and that is, that I did nominate a gentleman for a position in the Faculty June 21st, and that June 26ib, upon the discovery of the posture of matters, a part of which the public have, I withdrew the name of said gentleman previously nominated. If it is desired that tbe public Bhould be persuaded that the statement of the Journal editorial is not substantially true in regard to the publication of the intentions of the Board, I should be glad for the public that a publication, which has appeared in the journals of the country over the signature of the President of the Board be produced. I may say thus that I am sure you will deem it proper that the Journal article which vour anonymous correspondent has been pleased to attribute to me, should be given to the public through your columns, and I may say, also, that [shall trust that if your correspondent or correspondents have personal comments to make of me, my rhetoric or doings, they will do it over their responsible signatures.
Respectfully,
(Signed) GEO.
