THS Fourth of July celebration will be held at the County Fair Grouuds. It gives promise of being a huge affair.

Wis are indebted to Messrs. Emory Patridge and Danipl Evans for a lively little serenade on the harp and guitar last night.

DOOLIT, 100 Main street, and Ash at the Postoffice, have Appleton's Journal for July 3d with an elegantly illustrated supplement.

STOCK BOOKS for the Wincbell Ma cbine Manufacturing Company, mentioned in another place this morning, will be opened on Tuesday next.

DR.

SIMMS'

LECTURE.—To-night Dr-

Simms will lecture on Physical Culture and Health, in Pence's Hall. His lecture last night wa9 excellent. The hall is filled with paintings, free to visitors during this day. Charts given in the Hall to«day. Admission to the lecture to-night only ten cents. Go and hear the fun.

THB Board of Commissioners of Montgomery county, we learn from the Rockville Republican, have ordered an election on the 8th of August, to ascertain if the people are willing to De taxed to aid Inbuilding the road from this place to Logansport. There seems to be no doubt that the tax will be voted by an immense majority, and this, if Parke county does her duty, will secure the road.

INCOME TAX LIST.—By a combination of unfortunate circumstances a seotion of, names was omitted from our published list of inoome tax-payers in Tuesday's i». sue. As it is a collection of figures many of our people delight to compare one with another, we republish the entire list on the seoond page this morning. The figures on which tax is paid we have taken direct from the Assessor's books and may be relied on as correct as now published.

CHXAF,

BUT

GOOD.—Just received at

Kissner's Palace of Music an assortment of PianoB of medium Bize, yet of good workship, which are warranted in all respects equal, if not superior, to any Instrument yet introduced in this city of the kind termed cheap Pianos. Just call and examine the Instrument and look at the scale of prices and the closest buyers will be made satisfied. By going to the Palace of Music you will see a large assort* ment of Pianos together then judge for yourselves what beat suits you. 25,dlw

A GBBAT EHTKRPISK.—In yesterday's jssue we alluded to the proposed establshment, in this city, of a large manufactory of agricultural machinery. We stated that the matter was one of great importance and that the moBt advantageous results might be expected from it. Mr. Winchell, a well-known inventor and manufacturor of agricultural implements the proprietor of a large number of important patents, is now in the city endeavoring to organize a stock company with a capital of $150,000, of which sum he ready to take $26,000.

It is estimated that the first year's operations would amount to not less than $175,000. The works would, give employment to about 180 men, adding to our population eigbt or nine hundred persons, and of a claw the most desirable as immigrants. The entire amount of the sales of manufactured goods, except about eighteen or twenty per cent, that muht be paid for raw material, will be expended here, and it requires but JiWJtle perception to see how much such an expenditure— with a prospect of almost indefinite increase—will benefit all classes of trade.

We hope there is no need of argument to convince the monied men of Terre Haute that the opportunity now presented hem is one that they cannot afford to let •lip. We hare the best locaion in the United States for such an establishment. Let one be started and others will soon toilow, building up the city, increasing the value of property, and pushing us along toward metropolitan importance. If Mr. Winohell should not be able to succeed in scouring the requisite amount of stock subscriptions, and this grand opportunity should be lost, it would be a misfortune that all who desire the promotion of our local interests would have lasting reason to deeply regret But we bsliev* the ruooeae of the enterpiise cannot be doubtful, and expect, in a very few weeks, to see the massive walls of the proposed edifice in process of construction in the vicinity of the passenger depot. We •hall keep our readers advised of the progress of this movement, so fraught -with importance to the future of Ttrrt

BftRt*

of C. E. Hosford, who was

selected Beader for the Day, was unintentlon&Uy omittal from the Ust of appowtrnJu^ iuralby lha 4th of July Commit toe.

Liai HALTOBS spreads over a whole page of yesterday's Indianapolis Journal to tell of a spiritual sceanee with Mrs Shaeffer, at Xtayton, tad which is not half so goo*Vahow as pan be got up in this City on any cleir night.

THB SKABoir thus far has been decided ly unfavorable to the ice cream tradethat is, ao far aaeoncerai the saloon trade —the cool, damp evenings which have been the general rule, not being auggeetiya of this luxury. However, Mr. Scudder infomaus an unusual demand has prevailed i$r oream to be sent oat to families, and this has kept his trade above the average^ The warm evenings which most certainly come with July and August will be apt to throng his pleasant room with lovers of this luxury.

THK Commercial Exercises of the High School will be held at Dowling Hall this evening. The graduating class numbers fourteen —ten young ladies and four young gentlemen. The orations and es says will be brief—limited to five minutes each—and therefore the exercises will not. be tedious. The programme is interspers ed with vocal and instrumental music, to gether with the exercises usual on such occasions. The Hall, of course, will be jammed, and anaaHy attendance will be put in by those who desire to be comfortably seated. t'iiii

BODY NOT FOUND.—Our information in regard to the finding of the body of James Welch, the young lad drowned in the river Wednesday evening, was incor rect. The body had not been found up to last evening although the most diligent search has been made. The father of the boy is in the employ of Mr. F. Johns, and is absent from the city. The agonized mother sat on the river bank with a babe in her arms the greater part of Wednesday night. This sad case should be a terrible warning to the large number of small boys who daily bathe in the .river, and should also teach parents to have a care in their chidren going about the river unaccompanied by somo one to take care of them.

....

AN EXPLANATION.—It has never been our purpose, and we trust it never may be, to needlessly wound the feelings of any person, or any class of persons, and we learn with regret that a few items that have been transferred^^' columns from another paper, as well as two or three brief nientlons in our local and State news, have been regarded as reflecting unkindly upon that portion of our citizens who hold—as is their undoubted right—to the doctrines of Spir, itualism. We disavow any unkind intention, and distinctly state that it has always been our aim to treat all individuals and sects with entire impartiality.

Copying items from other papers, with the proper credits, is by no means an endorsement of the sentiments thus copied, else we might be held respons ble for Democratic platforms, and the speeches of Seymour, Wade Hampton, Frank Blair, George F. Train, Susan Anthony, and' hundreds of others whose sentiments are not in accordance with our views, but are, nevertheless, suitable matter for publication in a newspaper.

Precisely the same motives whioh induce us to publish such matters as these platforms and speeches, caused the publi cation of items from the Indianapolis Mirror in relation to the recent Spiritual Convention. We print what we think will interest oar readers, and though our selections may not always prove to be fair and truthful statements, they may not for that reason be read with less interest. Indeed we are sure that the very items which are said to have injured the feelings of persons towards whom we have no other than friendly sentiments, were read with interest by the parties who complain of their publication.

We have been informed by gentlemen in whose statements we have entire con fidence that the parties alluded to by the Mirror, Mr. and Mrs. J. Madison Allen* are persons of intelligence and refinement, and it is quite evident, to us, that the Mirror's criticisms were not only uncalled for but altogether unfair. In this connection it may not be inappropriate to remind the members of the Spiritual Soci ety, in this city, that we have cheerfully published much matter at the request of members of their organization. It is but a few months since we printed a full digest of a sermon, by their pastor, which placed their principles and belief fairly before the community in a manner calcu* lated to attract respectful attention.
