will be re
garded as much more unpleasant than the Alabama claims can be regarded by the English politician. We are not only ac cused of having created the taste for burlesque in America, but of being its chief, nay, its almost sole exponents in that country. We could almost wish that the author had not written so well, that, in finding fanlt with his style, we might have questioned his honesty.— Unfortunately, the article is a very brisk and undeniable performance. The degrading exhibitions of the burlesque ac tress are hit off to a nicety whilst our burlesque writers, our actors and oor au diences are fillipped with a lash of irony wbioh English dramatic critics would do well to imitate or borrow."
THX Philadelphia Inquirer gives an in teresting report of the preparations that are in progress for the great celebration at Gettysburg on the first day of July The principal feature of the occasion will be the dedecation of the monument which is to mark the battle ground 1863, where the vast army onder the Eebel General Ln waa. overthrown and driven back across the Potomac in rout and dismay. It is proper that the anni versary of that battle, so momentous to the nation, should annually be observsd. and we trust that each coming year will witness increased interest in the celebra' tion. The
Inquirer
says: "Ex-Govern

MOBTON, of Indiana, now a United States Senator from that Com' monwealth, and one of the staunchest patriots and most eloquent of our public speakers, will deliver the oration, while our Pennsylvania poet, traveler and nov elist, BAYABD TATLOK, will read original ode, written for- the'' occasion Large numbers of the "Boys in Blue, who fought on those ever-memorable days in the first week of July, 1863, will once more visit the scene of their heroic deeds and take part in the exercises."
THB Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Chronicle
fully confirms the
statement we have heretofore made, in what we deemed good authority, that the instructions of Mr. MOTLXT were mainly in accordance with the views of Senator SUMNER as enunoiated in his great speech, This correspondent,-whom we have generally found entirely reliable, asserts that the instruction of theMinlster differed from the views of the Senator only as to the question of the amount of damages for which Great Britain should be held responsible. Both the President and Secretary FISH signified their approval of the sentimentB expressed in Mr, SUMNER'S speech as a presentation of our grievances against Great Britain for her unfriendly course towards us. As to the measure of eur demands upon her in the way of redress for wrongs inflicted, they do not fully indorse the position assumed by Mr. SUMNER, as this, if insisted upon, would require Great Britain to negotiate, if at all, a treaty looking towards the pay ment to this country of about two thoui and millions of dollars for damages sustained, and a proposition to pay this amount, it is believed, would not be seriously considered for a moment.

In
April, 1869, immediately after Mr. Boutwell's advent, he was dismissed peremptorily— tbe reason assigned being that ho "had been appointed under Johnson, and endorsed by Democrats, and was intimate with Judge Woodward (of Pennsvlvania) and Mr. C. Den ison'—these two gentlemen having, with, Judge Grier, of the Supreme Court, signed hiB testi monial, and being, we suppose, whatever their political opinions may be, abundantly qualified to say whether a man was honest and capable. Mr. Stetson, the head of Mr. Jackson's bureau, at once announced to the Third Auditor that his (Jackson's) services were indispensable, and that his departure would paraljze tbe business of the office. So Jackson was retained, and two young men were put in along with him to learn the business from this broken-down soldier, with the view, as soon as they have acquired it, of taking his place and taking the bread from his mouth, and turning him- out on the world. This process is actually to be witnessed this moment at Washington, and will be on view till next April, as it is calculated that it will take a year for the two young men to become fit for Jackson's post .—The Nation.
THE OTHKK SIDE OF TilE HILDERBRAND CASE.
A Bomantic History.
Jtiom
the St. Loaii Bepnbllosn.J In our account of the doings of the somewhat noted character, Sam Hilderbrand, and his desperate resistance while an attempt was being made to capture him by the Sheriff of Washington county and a large posse
At the outbreak of the war, in 1861 Sam Hilderbrand and his brother, Frank Hilderbrand, it seems, were accused of stealing fronkgome of the citizens of St Francois county. A band of men were organized, who captured Frank Hildtr brand, took him out and hung him. They oovered up the body in a ravine. Sam Hilderbrand suspected Firman Mcllvaioe a mere youth, and sou of Mr. Orville Mcllvaine, now of this qity, to have been the leader of the band who hung bis brother. He determined to avenge his brother's death, and discovering young Mcllvaine at work in the harvest field cradling wheat, he shot him dead. This occurred tbe same season that his brother was hung. Hilderbrand then abandoned bis home, and became a dosperate leader on the Confederate Bide. His operations extended from the Arkansas line to St. Francois county, and many persons were killed by him during the war, After his name beoame famous as a partisan leader, Governor Fletcher offered a reward for his cipture, ou.the charge of the murder of Mcllvaine, and rewards were also offered by the citizens of St. Francois and Washington counties. A number of Hilderbrand's partisans united in offeriog tbe reward to save themselves from being distrusted by the Uuion men. But he evaded capture. He boasted tbat, with twenty feet the start in the bush, he would bid defiance to a regiment of men in pursuit.
About this time a German company, supposed to belong to Colonol Mueller's regiment, posted at Cadet Station, follow ed in pursuit of Hilderbrand, but the lat ter eluded, them. They went to the re&i dence of his mother—an old woman cated on Big iiver, eight mil. from Blackwell Station, and asked for Sam Hii jlerbrand, and not finding him, they ordered the old woman and her daughter to leave the premises. Tbey then sdt flre to t^ie house, and shot a youuger jjrdther of Hilderbrand, fourteen" yeaTS bf age, named Henry, who was ordered by his mother to stay behind and save what he could from the destiuUion. The men then took wh-t plunder they wnnted, let down the fence?, and drove the stock away with them. Hilderbrand has, since the war, made one of the oitizens deliver up to him some of the cattle taken on tbat occasion. The party then went to the Ia Grave Lead Mines and captured Washington Hilderbrand and a man named £*ndusk?, and taking them out in a lane obout a hundred yards from tbe shaft Where they, had been at work, shot them. Washington fell he first fire, but Landusky was fired at nine times before, he fell. This occurred on Friday, and Landusky w» to have been married to a sister of Hilderbrand (the same who was driven from the house with her mother) on tbe following Sunday.
Those circumstance! embittered the heart of Hiiderbraud, and he doubtless regiterod a vow to avenge what he regarded as the cold-blooded murder of his relatives.
At the fcloee of the war he went to Texand returnedto~St.'Francois county about a year ago in poor circutnstance& He gave out that he wanted to settle up hi* mother's estate, from which ha expected
Oae day he went to De Soto, and a friend who was with him asked Col. Bill Fletcher if he would like to see Hilderbrand. The Colonel replied that he would shoot him at tight. Hilderbrand then tapped Fletcher on the shoulder, and said.he was the man. Fletcher, it is said, forgot his brave words, and promised to

Hilderbrand is descri bed as of tall, slender form, sharp featfihj^ir^Taa feminine voice, steps as lightly as an Indian, and can clear a seven rail fence with the agility of a deer. With regard to the detail of the affair, as given us, they are doubtless subetan tially true but regarding tbe history Hilderbrand and the motives which urged him to take the course he has, we felt sure there must be another side to the story. The fasts, as related by those cognizant with his history, show that he was driven to desperation by the injuries received from those claiming to be Union men, and that he has, in a measure, taken redress into his own hands, with a determ ination ef avenging his wrongs.

SCALPED AT WASHITA.
Wbat a Victim Says About It.i r.
From the Detroit Free Preaa, Jane 16.] A victim of Indian vengeance in the present struggle along the borders and in tbe Territories, and one that will forever have cause to remember it, arrived in this city Saturday night, departing yesterday for his home in,'New York near Rufield, Monroe county. Sis name is Delos. G. Sandbertson, and he lost his scalp at the battle of Washita. He has been an in mate of Laramie Hospital since that event and was discharged about ten days ago by reason of the expiration of his term of service. He allowed, the curious to examine his poll, and a look at the still red and tender spot from which his scalp was jerked away, was not calculated to dice any person in favor of "ha'r lining. As but a few persons have ever lived to undergo the process, perhaps the sensations experienced by Mr. Sandbertson will interest and enlighten. Says he:
I was in the infantry. Oustar had command of the troops. There was quite a force of cavalry with us, but they were about a mile in the rear when we first discovered the redi. Some of the troops had been sent around so as^ to attack from the other side. The reds were camped in a sort of valley, and we were within eighty rods of them for half an hour before daybreak. Just in the gray of morning the firing commenced on both sides, and we had it all our own way for a few minutes, and the cursed snakes being much confused, and not knowing what was up. At length tbey rallied, and we could hear Black Kettle shouting and ordering. The vermin got into holes and behind rocks—anywhere they could find a place, and began to fight back with a will. We fired whenever we could a top-knot, and shot equaw*—there was IP's of them—juet as quick as Indians.— We'JISt *#enTin for wiping out the whole gang. When it was fully daylight, we all gave a big yell, and charged right down into camp. The lodges were all standing yet, and lots of Indians in them As we rUn through the alleys, a big red jumped out at me from behind a tent, and before 1 could shorten up enough to ran him through with my bayonet, a squaw grabbed me around the legs and twisted me*down. Thecamp was then fall of men fighting, and everybody seemed yelling as loud as he could. When I fell I went over backward, dropping my gun, and I had just got part way up againt the tquaw yanked me by the hair, when the Indian clubbed my gun and struck me across the neck. He might just as well have run me through, but he wasn't used to the bayonet, or didn't think. The blow stunned me it didn't hurt me the least, but gave me a numb feeling all over, couldn't have got to my feet then if all alone, while tbe squaw kept screeching, and pulling my hair out by the handful. "I ifeatd some of our boys shouting close b'y, and the squaw started and ran —one of tbe boys killing her not three rods off. The Indian stepped one foot on my chest, and with his hand gathered up the hair near the crown of my head. He wasn't very tender about it, but Jerked my bead thSs Way and that, and pin like'Satan. My eyes were partially open and I could see the bead-work and trim ming on his leggings. -Suddenly I felt the awfuleit biting, cutting flash go round my head, and then it seemed to me just as if my whole head had been jerked lean off. ,'i heter felt such pain In all PJ life* wby, it was like puiling your brains rigbt out I didn't know any more for two or threo days, and then came to to find that I had the sorest head of any human being tbat ever lived If the bo^rkilled the viper, they didn get back my ?o&lp perhaps it got lost in the snow.
