THK 8TATK DEBT.

A meeting of the .Board of State Debt Sinking fund Comiihissioners will be held in New York, at the office of the Agent sf State, on the 1st of July, for the pur pose of redeeming' about eight hundred thousand dollars of the five per cent, certificates. This redemption will reduce the outstanding indebtedness of thelState to one and a half millions of [dollars. Five years ago it was over seven millions. this is not a satisfactory exhibit, it would be difficult to say what would be. All of the two aud one-half per cent, certificates have been ^redoeotfd, with the-exception of a few hundred dollars that have prob ably been lost or destroyed.

There, are «lill two-hundred thousand dollars of the War Loan Bonds in the hands of holders who will not surrender them for payment. Notice was given that the money was on hand for their re demption in full but only two thousand dollars- were obtained The holders of the five per cent, certificates are also somewhat reluctant about surrendering, now that the State is able to topay them off, and there is some probability that the amount that can be taken up in July will not be handed in.

in Ex-Jndfe Assanits a Member or the Bar—First Blood for the Mem ber—The Kaock dowa Argument

From the Omaha Bepnbllc»n, Jane 10.] Although supposed to he protective, the law has its little failings, its members their little squabbles and the judges theji grievances, which must all be settled ty moral or forcible suasion. Gentlemen high'in society and great in learning are susceptible to the slurs of an Individ ual or a community. The judge's gown often covers a heart which will flash on its undue pulsations in a manner more fle»OB«trat1vB tlnm judicial. And the lawyer's wig may bestride a hot brain, quick in its workings to resent a wrong or applaud the right.

An amusing scene took place in the Omaha court room, yesterday, between Judge Wakely and Hon. Jno. I. Radkk, which terminated in the Slate's getting the amount of $50.

After Judge Wakely had closed his argument in a case wherein he had been retained as counsel. Mr. Redick opened up •with bis battery of sarcasm and railery, knocking, as he supposed, the legal profundities of his opponent into, pi, and leaving the impression that thejudge's logic was but moonshine, and his philosophy merre bosh.

Warming up to the subject, Mr. Redick excited himself and the jury into a belief that he and he only was right.

His oratory and eloquence worked also upon the feelings of the other side, until wrath got the better of sense. Going a little too far in his reasoning of the law, Mr. Reiick stated that the assertions df Mr. WeSrely were false. Whereupon the Jidge sprang to his feet and dealt tbe Hon. John I. a blow which sent him stasggeiing against the w«H Quick of tongue ana wit, the member "was also quick of muscle, and at once turned upon his assailant, when they clinched. The skirmishing was (Sfcne and lirely for several seconds, the whole ber laboring under an instaotaneouafiash of high eld excitement. But the gentlemen were soon parted, with first blood for Kedick, who succeeded in Injuring bis opponent in the region of ihfljcoaoe or neck. Judge Lake flood tdS ex-Honor $25, and would have let Mr. of for a paltry $5, only that be was not penitent nor sorry worth gxant, hence h»4oo wea-fnatoted la a tike l«B of "quarter centtfry."- The ring was soon cleared, and the trial want on as usual. We tried to learn which won th^suit^bat t^ink Bedick did.
