The proposed rowl Is only abont-forty five miles in length. The completion of the track, from this city to Danville, Will give us a direct communication with Chi cago,"0!l the shoTtesTpo/sslble'route, cjn formiog closely to an air Hflft.a distance of about one hundred and sixty mllesi— The completion of this road will add fen miles of railway to that already operating within our county, and will tend to secure to this city the trade of the Wabash val' lev as far up as the north lipe pf Vermil lion cotantfr. *"1«

A direct connect^n With®5hif?ago^ is now especially needed to gi# to dur city the proper faciUtiea. for the manufactire of iioo, and the use of the great coal fields which lie near it on Lhe east. Thie road, built, will make Te?r^ Haute a real manufacturing ceDtre, and will eccotn plishTnore ToVrar3alnvitiDg capital, labor and population 'to our midst, than any thing else that can be as easily done. We need now, above nil things, a direot Qhi cago railway, and if it is not speedily made irom here, it will be made from some point in the coal fields of Cltijf coan ty, and tbas many of the benefits properly belonging to our city, may be lost.

The completion of the road to Danville, as apart of the line to Chicago, will place our oity oh the great through route from Chicago to 2Taahville,and on the comple tion of the Henderson and Nashville road, n?w being rapidly constructed place it in direct connection with all the southern railways concentrating1-**- |he latter place-

It is needless to attempt to enumerate the various advantages which will result to our oity from the completion of the road under consideration. They must occur to overy citizen upon the lesist *e flection. It is entirely practicable build the road if the counties and peo jl al ng the projected line are willing contrrbuie liberally towards it. Park and Vermillloa counties have already ken the initiatory steps towards this n—' ter. As yet, nothing has been don Yigo, except by way of individual sdkb scription. It will doubtless be necessary for our county .to provide at least one hundred thousand dollars to ward the struction of the road to secure Its com tion. We think our oounty authorities ought to do this ia some proper way, 4 der the p/$sent law, and that there should be no opposition to such a course on the! part. Our county has heretofore assisted both the ^Terre Haute and Indianapolis, and the Evansville 3s Orawfordsville Rai roads .'by UmsubjcripHon dfstock, jn the former company

tbe amount of fifty

thousand dollars, and ,the latter to the amount of twenty five thousand dollars, These subscriptions were made at a time when tha cQunty^aa much las* able to do so than at the present". The encouragement and material aid given to these two roads proved mutually beneficial to the corporations and the public. The county, we bellfve^lost nothing by its former liberality, ia dollars and cents, 4nd gained largely in the increase of its taxable* growing out of the construction and operation of tbe railroads.

We hope our citizens, one and all, tfiU interest themselves. in tfi&3&6po&8 i'oad and will render it all the aid that is pos? «ible-, -when the matter shaft-be presented to them in the future. A.

their heat tempered by prox

There are six million* of vines already in Los Angeles county alone.— There ia one vine in Santa Barbara county forty-three years old, which produces five to six tons of grapes per annum.— Oranges, lemons, limes and citrons, figs, walnuts, olives ai.d almonds, bananas and palms, tobacco, sugar-cane and cotton, grain and fruit, all thrive, though many of them are not as yet as largely cultivated as they soon will be. Indeed, there is a desirable country in this world, it is'Southfern California and, excepting in tbe extreme southern limits of he State, where the heat is such thai water is scarcer than whisky, and it is dan uerous to leave candles hanging up on a nail, because ihey »re apt to run away, leaving nothing but a string of w.cks, the bad points of the climate bave been mucb extiggerated. from the London Telegraph.] The gaming tables are the chief ob ject of interest at Baden with many and really it is a pity it should be so—for the tables bring tbe crowds! At Homburgor Mod ace they are. not so much in the way. I had ignorantly supposed that of gaming at Baden there was.an' end. The fact is one rouge-et-noir table and two roulette tables arein full awing even as I write I should say that fifiy or sixty people round any table is about the maximum I bave seen. They appear to be mainly old men and young boys, and three or four of tbe old men with the ineffaceable gain ster's mark upon their brow. As yet they do not seem to play very high for a thousand francs won or lost is about as they bavo gone while I have been watoh in? their proceedings.

Youngsters who look U^o Qerman stu dents from Heidelberg, come in eight .or ten.together, and, ait«r a good deal of whispering, Karl or Pratiz risks a five-* trano piece, according to ftiS fancy, on odd or even, 'fed. or black. If he wins, be perseveres. I liaveseea «lad of tbis sort win bis two hands full' of fivo-franc pieces I have never seen jpne leavo the room with ihe'money fie had at first gain ed. A gentleman last night won over five, hundred francs at a coup, and walk' ed out. There goes a man with

His original gain soon disap peared, and as much more from his own stores. When he put his last napoledns on the two zeroes, and the ball was roll ing round, I could just see a nervous gg&ch $cMt (oreh9ft&:-cIt TKHKism-oftg —Ine pittiTess rake swept in his last

He loses bursts out laughing, and vanishes. Well for him! A lady here last night went on playing with varied luck for about an nour when she had lost all, her face was a very picture of quiet despair. Behind the cbaif. jipon w^ick, «^ie had lost ber money, -she stood watchitig'the others at' play, or rather, as I suppose, reflectihg -uncomfortably on consequences!''

Thrilling Adventure with a Mad Ball The other day a famous railroad man ager of Cincinnati and a well-know Third-street lawyer, went to Sedamiville for an afternobn's recreation. While basking in the.sun an the back of a stream that puts in at that point, all unconsciom of danger, an enraged bull that had got mad about something, and gone in pur. sbit Of prey, came suddenly upon them T-hey sprang to their feet in an instant when away went the railroad man, swift as one of his own locomotives on a down grade, behind time, and away went Mr.

Ball after him. The legal'man repaired to a revolver, with whioh'hd went in pursuit of the bull, a little more craey, apparently, than the bull wa«. The rail road man afterward confessed that the appearance of his legal friend, as he came charging down with glaring eyas, and hair streaming in the win4, his pistol oockfld, and about "half-cocked" himself, terrified him worse than the ball dii

The '.bulf became conscious that something unusual .was threatening his rear. He cbecked up a little, threw a glance over his shoulder and recognizing the enemy, he nodded to the railroad man, as much as to say he would let him off this time, and turned upon hiis pursuer. Legal man came to a halt, and for half minute he and the bull stood glfcriog at each other, both pawing up the ground With!equal fury. Some boys who wit nessed it from the top of a neighboring cow shed were filled with admiration the apeotacle, and yelled "bully 1" was hard to tell which was the bulliest, tbe bull or the lawyer.

But a crisis came. Tbe ball lowered his, head for a oharge. The lawyer weak etred arid grew pale. He has been aoeus tomed, in the line of his profession, to make pretty heavy charges "himself but -he' oouldn't stand that one so he dropped ,his pistol, turned tailrand ran, the bull so close behind him that be could sometimes faei-tHs-horn gently raising his dOat-tails

He looked for some means of escape, few rods ahead of him he saw a fence.— He went for it, and the bull continued to went for him. The bull was evidently for tbe plaintiff, and the lawyer wanted to be retained 6h de fence. As he reached the incloSure, and made a spring for it, the bull, with an upward motion of his head, being cbee beh'nd, skillfully ripped open his outer garment from coat tail to collar, •'This is not all," as the showman says, The fence was on the bank of the creek that put in there. The bank was high and steep, and with the assistance tbe bull afforded him, legal man went clean over tbe fence and rolled down the steep declivity into the creek. The bull gazed scornfully at him for a movement over the fence, and then, flushed with success, swaggered off to find the rest of his game. But the railroad man had no desire to "chase the buffalo o'er tbe plain," or be chased by a mad bull, and he had pru dently retired to a place of safety, while tbe simple villagers had assembled a sufficient force to dispatch the bull. The lawyer was^ drawn out of tbe creek with a eein and hung on tbe fence to dry, an operation that didn't require very long as hrhad been getting dry for an hour or two. He thinks of bringing suit for damages againts the bull or bis heirs, for damagas to hu suit.—Out Timet.
