CITY NEWS.

THE GRAND JURY convened in secret session yesterday morning.

HARPER'S BAZIB for June 19th is on our table from Ash's News Depot.

PERSONAL.-J- M. Griffin, of the Yin cennes Gazette,

was in the city yester

SEE advertisement of property for sale ia Worthington, or to exchange for prop

erty in this city.

I. K. MORBISON, ESQ., editor of the Worthington Times,

is in the city stop

ping at the National House.

THB woman suffrage convention con venes at Indianapolis to-day. We learn this city will be well represented.

THE obliging lccal agent and attaches of the American Express Company keep us under continued obligations for favors,

COMPLAINTS are made of "grown persons bathing in the river within the city limits in day light, all of which is in violation of decency and a city ordinance.

DANIEL WALKER, a well-known and estimable citizon of Honey Creek township, died at bis residence on Saturday, of erysipelas, after an iHneesof but a few

understands that John

Tolbert has been appointed Deputy City Clerk. The Council at its last meeting conferred tho appointing power upon Mayor Cookerly.

DOUBTS are expresed as to the Grand Jury finding an indictment against Curran, now in jail under chargo of murdering Jackson, owing to the absence of a material witness.

COL. E. W. THOMPSON delivers tho annual address bofore the literary societies of Wabash College, on Tuesday evening, the 22d inst. "Formation of Character" will probably be the theme.

SEVERAL matrimonial suits, we learn are imminent among tbe bar of ths city In each case only one lawyer is engaged and he is on the side of the prossecution We heard of one case recently in which a nolle

was entered.

THE MAYOR'S COURT had before it yes terday one case of assault and battery, one drunk and one keeper of a house of dis reputable character. In the latter case a jury was demanded, and as usual the defendant went clear.

Two FEBTIVLS will be held this evening—the ladies of the Catholic Church holding1 thoir's in Dowling Hall and the ladies of the Centenary at their Church on North Seventh street—Strawberries and cream will be served in abundance.

JOHN B. KIRKMAN, ESQ., one of the oldest employes of the E. & C. R. K. and one of tho cleverest of the clever gentlemen on that road, has been assigned to a conductorahip of one of the passenger trains. Col. Abe Sharra takes charge of tho freight train heretofore run by Kirkman.

ACTIVE.—Street Commissioner Barrick is prosecuting his work with as much vigor as if he expected to continue for ten years in tho office he has served with sush general satisfaction. His shovel brigade is daily causing alleys and back streets thnt smelt aloud to heaven, to emit a fragrance almost as sweet as a flower garden.

THE COUNTY Board of Equalization, consisting of the Board of Commiesionere, Auditor, Treasurer, Appraiser and Deputy Appraisers, convened in the Auditor's office yesterday morning. A large number of property owners convened also, who appeared surprised that their property bad advanced in value since the appraisement four years ago. They wanted the appraiser's figures reduced, but when it w»8 found they would not dispose ot their possessions for from thirty to fifty per cent, above the valuation, tho Board was not disposed to make a change. In a few cases, where their was a manifest excess over property in the immediate vicinity, reductions were made. All tho lands in Sugar Creek township were raised five per cent, above the deputy appraiser's figures, and we understand this will prob" ably occur in Otter Creek lands. The Board will continue in session towday.

STATEMENT of tke facts in re

lation to the suspension and restoration of our townsman Major Charles Ogden Wood, at Sitka, Alaska, is given by a Washington correspondent, ontho second page of this morning's paper. It will be read with interest by his many friends and acquaintances in this city.

THE BESIDENCE of George Lockridgo, three miles east of the city was entered on Saturday last while tbe family was absent. The object, evidently was robbing, as the drawers 8nd chests were ransacked, and papers strewn over the floor. There was no mooey in the house, and it has not been discovered that any articles are missing.

COTTNTY TREASURERSHEPHERD'S country residence, just east of town, is one of the most lovely and attractive spots within a short drive from the city. In very truth a waste place has been caused to blossom as the rose. He has been endeav oring to sell it or exchange for city property, but the beautiful spring garb which now covers tho ground has about discouraged him from doing so*.... ,.~

THE CRIMINAL COURT, Judge Crain presiding, convened yesterday morning, and proceeded to business.

Thomas Reed, charged with asaauit and battery on Christina Smith, with intent to murder, was put on trial. The jury could fiod no intent "to murder, and for the assault assessed a fine of one dollar and costs.

Samuel Lowe was puton trial on charge of stealing a horse. The case was not concluded when the Court adjourned.

FOURTH or JULY.—We notice some papers are suggesting that as the "ever glorious," &c.,.Fourth of. July comes on Sunday this year, an appropriate sermon should bo preached in place of the usual demonstration, and recommend it as a good idea. We protest. What, give up the grand precession, the grand Marshal on prancing steed with sash and sword, the spread-eagle oration, tho commiog ling of country and city folks, the brass bands and patriotic glee-clubs, and other incidents pertaining to the ever glorious Fourth?—Never 1

How TO TELL WHEN HE S DBUNK. Nearly every day there os a dispute in the Mayor's court, between his Honor and the person arfaigned as to whether the la ter is drunk. The question is argued with divers and sundry conclusions. Tbe same question Is argued and disputed every day throughout the country. At last, a Superior Court—that of Georgia has clinched tbe matter thuswise, and leave it with Mayor Cookerly to decide whether the decision will work satisfaC' torily in his jurisdiction: "It is not nec essary that a man should be wallowing in a ditch, or bumping his head against your posts, that you may know him to be drunk but whenever he begins to tell tiie same thing over twice, then he drunk!"
