He will Bhortly visit St. Louis for that pur pose. THE COMMUNICATION of a friend Reflecting severely on the.'Jcoaducl of the Board of Trustees of our city schools, is probably better omitted than published It doeB not appear to us that anything will be gained by offensive personalities. The question at issue should not be considered, by either side, on persona grounds. Nor is it fair to impugn the motives of any official without adducing proof to substantiate every,-charge preferred either direclly or by implication.

MINISTER Bublingamk rebuked fbi foreigners who thought they "outranlfipd' him in Paris, in the following scathing style:

We'Americans do n6t raise the question of rank. We receive all gentlemen as occupying a common level. Bu^ifjypu raise the question of position, we outrank you. You are nothing but dukes, marquises, and counte. We belong to the royal family. We are the equal of. oiir President. We are all heirs apparent to the throne. We stand up for our order, and, if need be, we fight for our order.

Mb. Cobcorah's bew charity ,t t"Be "HoBW for Indigent Widows," in WashingtoiL City, is to b? called the "Louisa," after lys deceased wiL. Sixty widows of officers, clerks, and other worthy publio servants, dying poor, are to be provided with neat and comfortable quarters during their lives—the work to be under the direction of five Washington ladies to be chosen by himself or his trustees. As vatfttfties occur in the original number they'are to be filled by the lady managers. The edifices for this noble charity, and the grounds connected with them, will cost Mr. Cob COBAN $200,000, if not more.

Fbom an interesting table prepared at the Treasury department, it appears that the world, at least Uncle Sau's portion of it, is growing honest. The "conscience fund" is steadily increasing. Difring the whole of the year 1861 but $250 was contributed to this interesting depository, while in the first five months of the pres. ent year $15,000 were sent in. The amounts wrung by contrition from awakened consciences have increased with each succeeding year and our people have thus been steadily Increasing in honesty. Those that wronged the government in by-gone days, and made the fullest reparation through the "conscience fund," will, it -Jurt' W fBTer* commit their old transgressions no more* and their examples cannot fail to exer^ cise a most beneficial effect on the nation at large.

Thb Public, a Frcnch journal in the Imperial interest, says: "M -are. This is a very jplain promise, and would seem to need no commentary or explanation. Every path is an engagement of honor, but will Meam. BocHMoar, J*AMCKi»and Badiw «o nnderstood it?"

Ldventnre of a Boston Man Mississippi htenmbontlorroiponlonce of the Boston Traveler.]

At Helena, Ark., the Boston manstoped nd took another boat for Fort Pillow.— )q tbis boat wa? a mulatto man who tad been an orderly sergeant in the Fed liral army and was qUite intelligent, and I ave the Boston man a great deal of inormation about the battle of Port Hudon. The mate of the boat abused all he men, and was constantly pulling he.m about and cursing them in a most lisgusting manner. At lastj for somo •eglect of duty or failure to' comprehend is commands, the mate got exceedingly ngry with the mulatto, and seizing window sash filled wiCh glass an eighth fan inch thick, he raised it to strike the ulatto. Th- latter dodged the blow nd ran up the gangway, and, backin to a corner near tbe Boston man, en rottted the mate not to strike him "wid at glass." The mate rushed at him like demon, and with one stroke smashed jhe sash and glass over the offendin i\an'a bead, cutting huge gashes in heeks and forehead, and rendering him a moment senseless. The mate again lifted tbe remnant of tbe gash over his sad for another blow, when the Boston laan caught the sash from behind, sayiog |t the same time, coolly: "Don't you strike that man again." I "Who in the devil are you? almost jcreamed tho angry man. '*$!• matter don't you strike tha^man igain."

By this lime a-crowd had gathered jround, and "shoot hi th," "shoot bim" dchoed on every side. The Boston man teamed afterward that there was not Northern man on the boat. "Sh6ot him, by—-, or 1 will," exdlaimcd a little short man on one side of tbe arowd. "Let's all bave a hack at him," said Another, and in an ipstant no less than tSvelve pistols or revolvers were displayed. "He's -ft Ciirawr^Yatfkee. I k'now"bis phiz. He's down here preachin' insurrection among the niggers. Shoot him, faato, or we will." "So ho, so ho," sneered the Yankee, ''things have changed since the war, Somewhat, I guess. Now, gentlemen, I qee it takes twelve Southerners to shoot one unarmed Yankee."

This set them on fire, one burley felijpw^eo&ked his revolver, saying, I'if the fiate was a d—d coward he was not afraid to shoot any Yankee in the coun-. try." Just then a lady, who was evidently of Northern birth, came up to the orowd, and .putting out both of her index ingers toward them, made, an
