This is the opinion of Senator and others who ought to be the bestjpossible judges in the matter. Admitting this, twenty-three atatea are to be counted as having ratified the amendment To those may be added New. JBai&pabirfe and Vermont, which hav.e at no tim° b^en in doubt. With twenty-fiveStatesfalifylDg, there are needed three more.'
Events of rooeot date leave no (ioubt that Virginia will be carried by the publican?, and vrtll promptly ratifj^ the amendment, for no Demooratio or jother organization is in the field opposing it. In Alisjisssppi, also, if we mayJudgefrom resolutions of Democratic meetings—and notably from one heid at Brandbn-j-the Democrats themselves have conclude^ that it is necessary to accept the situation and will make ho effort lo resist' the amendment. I£so, we may hope ttbftt' before December these two State* will have added the twenty-gixth and tw inty seventh votes In ratification.
The election in. Providence quit* recently did -not afford indication, f» wo hoped it would, of the probable result in that State. The SkuoCB candidate was withdrawn! and the other Kep ablii can candidate elected by a large maj rity, If other States vote as we majrboi' expect, the adoption of the- atoendi leffi* this year will d^pend upon Bliodelsknd. THO Peace Jubilee "Coliseum." The Boston Journ&l has along account of the building called the "Coliseui erected in St. ame's Park for the Peace Jubilee of June. The Journal says:
The building is now wholly up, soifar as ita exterior shape can be eefP, and wtile the work of raising and covering the roof has been pushed forward with ^11* possible dispatcb, corresponding progress ha*. been made upon the construction tff pie interior. More than 300,000 feet of timber, in the way of supports, braces, ties &c., and a vast quanity of bolts and oiher iron work have been added to wjiat WAS originally contemplated. The gate of lumber to be used in the sirdc* turehss already been swelled to upward or 2,000,000 feet. In short, if the building was intended to remain standing for years, instead of days or week*1 it woild not be more solid or substantial.
The Coliseum is generally spoken oqas standing upon St. Jamee' Park, but-in point of fact it overruns the park considerably, the bounds the prak extending only 300 feet. The bniiding encroaches upon Dartmouth street* St.Jameaevenae, and also upon Huntington avenu^ wbtch starts from Boyleston ttniet at Clfcrendon street, and runs southwesterly, parallel with the Boston A Providence Railroad: Tne structure is 500' feet in length, and 300 feet in widtb, and runs nearly no:' aodaoatb, the front being iisiml toflp stun street, with the gallery designed 1 the etioir and musicians at the end nearest the railroads. Now, hadJuUs Logan herself been a total failure as an actress, we could easily understand these sharp and bitter words. But is her language in accordance with justice, and is it only such women as she de.* scribes that win tbe dramatic prites?
^rfau^fe^pi^talf'o? whom won peounlary success and i|x a short time we will have Mies Bateman, who will unquestionably renew her former triumphs. Does the success of actresses like these depend on such aJceS* eories as Miss Logan sharpens her witQ upon? We could mention a dozen other names of the day only less popular and prominent than these, whose success ih, in like manner, the result of genuine ability in the role of tragedy or comedy^ Though some of the leg-dramatists and can can performers here created a temporary furore, it is not the "fair thing" to over« look the cases, no less numerous, in whiph. honorable popularity and Urge reward/ have been won by players who illuslratd the higher features of dramatic art, and would have scorned to appeal to anything base or immoral.
