Qtrrr* an excitement was created yesterday by the report that a woman named Mrs. Martha Smith had come to her death from violence received at tbe hands of her husband, who resides at 145 Bright street, near the Fourth Ward school house. It appears that she had been sick siaee Thursday, and died suddenly on Sanday evening. After her death, brusi&es were discovered on her person, one on her hip^ being quite prominent. Shis, together with the report that she had been ill-treated by her husband, gave cise to auspicious of foul play.

Coroner Allred was summoned yesterday afternoon, and caused a post mottem examination to b$ held, the result of which, together with ihe evidence elicited before the jury ef inquisition, has not been made public. The attending physician states that he saw her full against the bed poet, on last Friday night, as she was returning to the bed, after opening the door for him and her husband.

The family, consisting of five children, beaides the mother and father, were .in deetitute circumstances, the little ones being wretchedly clad, and suffering for food.

Marion Smith, the husband of the deceased, is reported to be a man of dissipated habits, and did not provide for his family. He is a Wizzard oil man, and had tried the effect of his remedy on the deceased at an early stage of her illness, without effect. The investigation by the Coroners jury, and post mortem examination, will be concluded tbis morning, when the verdict will be made known.—

Lieut. MdCatter, ^riting at Ft. Hays, Kansas, May lOCb, gives an account of the killing of some Indians who were confined at /that post, and who were ordered to remove in tbe care of the guard from the corral to the guard room. When they gathered 1n their tents they began the death-whoop, and taking out their knives, went for tbe soldiers. Cardigan attacked the Sergeant of the post and was knocked senseless by a blow with the butt of a musket. Sallie, a ferocious squaw, wielding a knife, tried to sheath it in the body of an officer, when one of the guards shot her dead.

Big Head looked with scorn on the corral ol bayoa'Mi Mtroundifig him and stabbed sergeant Hansen dangerously, wounding him in the baok. A guard shot him dead.

Lofajr Haifa tried to stab everybody near him, aid was pricked 'seHoosly by bayonets- He and the senseless Cardigan were then disarmed and lodged in the guard house.

Gen. W- S. Harney and his Secretary* Col J. C. Conner, leave to-day for the Sioux Reservation on the Upper Missouri, 14 miles from Fort Sully. The General will have the care of 12,000 Indians, composed of the Ogallahs, Bruel, Minecongous, Sansarics, Tocqiktonas, Uncapap, Two-Kettles, BlacafOet and Cut* Heads. These bands are located between Forts Randall and Rice.. A quantity of agricultural implements and wagons have been shipped for the Reservation, and the General isanxkuB to get the Indians to work. He goes up with instructions direct from the President.

Nkw Yobk, May, 18.—One of the men enlisted for Cuba on the schooner Grapeshot returned berg from Beaufort last night. He reports that the vessel ia still at Beaufort, detained by United States authorities at the instance of Minister Eoberts and By order of Secretary Fish. There were fifty men who enlisted here on the Qrapeshot, who are now wandering about the streets of Beaufort, to whom the Cuban Junta here will send relief. '•V1 ADVIOM FBOM TBINJDAD.

A Trinidad letter of the 17eh ult., states that the Spanish troops attacked a body of patriots near there on- the 18lh but were routed.

A Spanish convoy was captured near Ii'oe Tunas on the 15th, several of the troops retreating to that town from whence they rallied to attack the patriots again. The case of Geo. B. Davis, indicted for perjury in making false affidavits against Collector Bailey, wis before Judge Benedict to-day. During the opening for the presecution, Davis became fearfully excited, exclaiming repeatedly "it's a lie," and finally drew a bottle from his pocket, swallowed the contents and declared it be poisoo, and that he would be dead in two hours. The case was adjourned till tomorrow, to ascertain if the prisoner was playing off.

WATS AND MBAXS COMMITTEE. The Ways and Means Committee of the United States House of Representatives, go to Philadelphia Monday next, spend a week in Pennsylvania, and then go to San Francisco, returning in August.
