This odM ebration, 6i the grtet repra--sentalives of the Yankee "Hub" prefer to designate it* if to iwcon ducted on a scale worthy the great and crowning evfcntitt o«lr ilationhl which it designed to commemorate. & will occupy five entire days, viz.,' the 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th of the approaching month of June. An immense building, cajfaWe of acconuow ing fifty thousand persons, is now course of erection, and will be w»d*«ly finished and appropriate decorated before tha opening .day of the festival'

The Jubilee will be inwtgurated with the national anthem, "Hail Columbia," the musical portion of which 'will be performed by an orchestra of one thousand pieces, and a grand choras of twenty thousand trained voices. This Oflean of melody will, in the last verse of the an them, be still further augmented by the peeling of all the bells of Boston, the rolling of brigades of drums, musketry fir jng, and salvos of artillery. The muBketry and artillery will be in unison with the music. All the bells will be rung, and all the cannon fired from the music stand by means of electricity.

This is but one feature of this grand celebration. All the others are on a scale of grandeur and magnificence worthy the august occasion.

We are informed that all the choruses, musicians, &c, have already been secur ed, and little now remains t6 be done save to completo and decorate the build ing wherein the' celebration is place,

The Wattash Female College.

We havei heard and read daring the yea or two past, a good deal about an insti tution of learning, of high order, for young women, to be located at Terre Haute. No doubt the community feel a deep interest in this matter. This feel ing cannot be too deep. Tbe importance of such an enterprise cannot be over-esti-mated. There is no danger of eayingand writing too much on this subject, if what is said and Written is to the purpose. I have been deeply interested for the success of this work from the time it was first proposed, bat have taken no active part in its promotion, until within a week or two past. Whether what I now say in its behalf is to the point or not, others must

JudeeiC^ It is well known that a gentleman of this city offers the munificent sum of $100,000 for endowing such an institution, on the reasonable condition that the people will add some $50,000 more for suitable.buildings, and he will give $10,000 for this object, leaving $40,000 to be collected from other sources.

It appears from an article in Wednesday's paper, from Rev. Mr. Morrison, that $20,000 of this amount has been pledged, still requiring $14,000 to be subscribed before the endowment can be secured. An 'appeal is now made to the people of Terre Haute and vicinity to furnish this amount, and thus make certain the loca. tion of a first-class Female College in this city. There can be no doubt that the people will respond liberally to this appeal. There is every motive of interest, of philanthropy and religion, for engaging ear-nestly-in. the work of carrving out this noble design. Few of the most celebra-: ted colleges of the land have commenced on so strong and liberal a foundation as is here promised.

Let us merely suggest some of the strong inducements -the peoplo have Tor helping through, this enterprise.

Such a college will add greatly to the wwaHb, material and moral beatity, social Tank,, and good name of our handsome city.

Such a seat of learning as is here .contemplated mitst be a perpetual IcnWe of wealth to the place where it is located.— It will be of snch a character that many p«haps .aaait of its pupils will come from distance. Each member of tbe pt*sf*

like the time-fco.gpnid ioetitutiiins of Oxford, Yale and Princeton Colleges. This fountain of mien a* wlli. 'poar streams as long as the W^bafh flows. Thia fact must give it if Vaiue^o flSnrplaoe much greater than J^ny individual stock enterprise could possess.

A Bchool of this character Qotpmenclng with the princely endowment of$150,000 will soon take rank and- have a name among the first institutions of the land.— It will give tbe place a desirable celebrity and draw around it, from all directions! families of wealth and culture for the education of their children and in this way it will greatly enhance the value of real estate of the city and vicinity.— There can be no .doubt of this the his-tory-of all similar institutions proves it. There is nothing which will turn a desert into a fruitful field like a living fountain of Christian literature-and science what must such a fountain do for an already fruitful field (jao- we afford to let the money, that can open such a fountain here, go to In ditthapolis or New York? Hundreds of cities would gladly accept this offer now made to Terre Haute. But the gentleman who makes it would, no doubt, prefer that his own city should have the ben efit of it. Let citizen's consider' the matter well before they lose the rich prize now within their reach.

But there are considerations that must awaken much deeper and more profound interest in this subjeotthan any of a material nature. We are ready to blash when we see learning advertised for ssle like cattlo, or merchandise. Its value cannot be estimated by dollars and celts Health, wealth, all the useful arts, and fine arts, civil liberty and jgccial happiness are all the products of sound learning. Yet learning is valuable chiefly for itself, not for what it produces. It is(iot like the fig-tree, valuable for the fruit it bears but it has an intrinsic worthwhile it bears all manner of j*ood fruits, and the land is a desert without it, it is infinitely more valuable than all its fruits. It is to be prized for its own intrinsic excellence. t:.

Education is the growth of-mind, the increase, the' building up of the faculties of the soul. Institutions of learning make mind. This is their product, their work, manship this is what they turn off and send out into the country, every year in* creased supplies of soul, spirit, intellect, head, heart, brains, every thing that goes to make up the man or woman. Colleges are great and important things, beciuse humanity, because mind, is a great and important thing. Over on the edge of the city is a place where they wobk iron into n&iUA Not very far off is another place where they convert wool into various kinds of cloth on another street is a place where they extract from coal a substance which is converted into light. Mow let the city have another building where all the improved educational machltaery shall be collected and brought intp use for making mind—mind which {jivee man's band the strength and skill to draw iron ore from the earth and convertlt in to nails and knives convert wool' into clothing and extract brilliant Ughtfrom the black coal. If these ton ttotsand products of mind are so valuable, what must be the intrinsic worth of mind itself?

But it may be asked, have ife not schools which are doing the very work which you speak? What need of anotb er? I answer there is not an institutiot in the four States of Indiana, Illinok, Missouri and Ohio that fills the plao which it is expected this college will fl] It iB not intended to drill children in tti elementary branches. That alVimpdtant.work is done, and well done, common schools. Nor is it proposed give a fashionable education merelj tto prepare young ladies to shine in the pr lor and social circle and teach tbm those winning arts by which wealthy ius bands may be secured who will call tiem to preside over homes of affluence, tase and luxury. There are schools en«gh in tho country which are doing this wirk. It is not its purpose to train its pupil: es pecially for teachers. Leave the th ry and-practice of teaching wbere they tin be best taught, to tbe Normal School

ti

But the purpose of tbu Wabash female College is to give young ladies all tbe advantages and incentives to thoro^h intellectual culture which are furnished by the best universities and colleges in tbe land to give to young ladies of jln diana all the advantages of an advanced course of study that Yale and Prin^ton give to young men.

Too Sbarp for Her Better-Half-

From the New Orleans Flesynae.l A very amusing little incident recently occurring in our city is being whispered around by partiea seemingly well adrisea in the premises. It appears that at one of our fashionable places of amusement last winter, a very fascinating and pretty soubrette hadja short engagement. At was afficientlylonac, however, to completely enlist the admiration of a gentleman engaged in commercial- pursuits, and not a great while from a northern latitude. By some means the parties bscame acquainted, and as the days fled along, mutual sympathy mellowed into love. The lady, a little coy at first, Anally lent a listening ear to the entreaties of her adorer, and after a brief enganCment they were married. Of course, it is not the intention of the reporter to recite the ro sy dreams of the honeymoon how eaeh adored the other, and happiness, radiant aa posy itsef, bewitched the hours into visions of delight. Weeks sped along, and months had meatured their length on time's dial. But last a circumstance ocoured which put an end to billing and coeing, and revealea a domestic imbroglio, not at all in harmony with the felicity that proceeded it.
