Music in our TobUe SebOQliu

''At a visit paid soma time tie schools on Fourth atreet, we were greatly pleased, and surpriiodkeyondtneaaafc, ht the method of teaching music,. and the socoess gained. We&ave ofUn &fea en. tertained by some siaipleTnelod'®* sung by the children in the school room, and hare ever looked wit#! f*W upon the gradual bat steady advance of music to a place in the regular exercises of our pub* }JQ schools. Bat .we found here, that while we thought ourselves up wltbthe times, we were altogether behind the age Instead of simple melodies introduced to break up the monotony of study aad recitation, or of the greater Jwe&rinees and monotony of sitting still, we ibund the schools of all grade*ft#* department to B'gS Sohool. andergoing a thorough systematic drill in the rudiments and Bciencfe- of music. (Following the Professor down cellar, we found sixty or eighty little folks jast from their mothers' laps-—-and some of them hadieft the lap two or three years to soon—?pack ed into a low, damp, dusty room, which is a disgrace to the city, and which possessed, besides the children, only one attraction as a school, and tfcit live, active, cheerful firat-raie teacher,

Expecting to bear some little we were surprised when, all eyes having been been fastened upon the Professor^, he stretched out his left hand spreading the fingers, and, with bis right hand, touched the tip of the first finger, and from every one of those little throats came harmonious, Do. Qujckly the finger pass ed between the first and secjnd fingers, and Ra followed. The tip of tire second finger was touched and Affr vrairced through the room. Going thus through Iho scale, then "the Professor began ,'Vkip ping round," and quick as lijghtniog, as he touched this finfier and that, the proper note resounded through the room. .Never did we eDjoy a musical exercise in school so much as that, and never did we- see children apparently: enjoy, an. exercise-so muoh. Going from this room lo tkjoise of a higher grade,—our schools are graded from the cellar to the attic,—'we*Tound the same exercise varied and rendered more dfficult, but always attractive^end pleasant, and with it reading—of music from the black-board, and oven* the jjrit ing of music Joy the pupils. Thus, insteadof a few moments spent -pleasantly in singing a song, there is an efji^ally pleasant, and far more profitable drill as we have said,.,in thp rudiments and soienoo of music.—•—• T"! "When it is remembered that this i^ parried on through all th® school'?, an^ in all grades, it seems impossible that any of our children should leave tBe puTJHc schools unable to sing. The aim-is to enable all the pupils to read music jusfc as readily and properly as tUey read words and sentences. Thus we are training up a generation of singers. We.need not dwell upon the refining influence of music, for no man of sense questions the existence of this iqfluettca in a Jotffcrful degree. And by the introductionjof music into our schools, we have all the children brought under its power, and, by this systematic acd' ptoiongeJ'training, put udder its power for all their lives, for they are made singers. Too much importance cannot be laid upon this constant training extending systematically through, all the years of school life. .'

Then in the matter, of -economy, too, there can be no doubt that by the employment of a first class professor, legsi money is paid out for the musical education of all t^ie children, than would be paiiby a few parents for the private instruction of their own children. A thousand children are taught by lb is molhod just as well, probably generally better, und at less expense than a hundred by private instruction.

The present effect upon the pupils must also be taken Into account. Said an old teacher, "When toy pupils 'cut up,' so that they deserved a flogging, I used to set them to singing." Thero is sound philosophy in this^ Theio can be lie doubt that the judicious mingling of music with the school exeroifd^ I^ould often do better than the rod. If «4ftusic hath charms to soothe a savage," it is worth trying with some of the young sat agea which often get into our sohocfe.

Then there comes the enjoyment of oar children. Few are the pupils that are not eager for the musical exercise, and no man is more heartily welcome to the school rooms than the Protester bT" Jttusic. The monotony, the lisllessness and lethargy of the schoolroom is broken upi and the pupils return to the other exercises happier, and with new zeal.

May it not be that herein we are to fiad a practical solution of the vexed question, in some of our churches, concerning-con gregational singing. If we have a whole generation of good singers trained up, may we not be able, and expect to render obedience to tho exhortation. "3t the people praise Th*e, G, God let all the people praise Thee!"

If any parent or tax payer baa any doubt about the exp6dienoy of -music, let him for a half day, or an hour even, accompany Professor Paige, who is a firstclass gentleman, a sweet singer, and a master of his profession. We will guarantee that all doubts will thus be removed. If there be no doubt, ^skUl we advise the visit for the enjoyment U,will give tho

About this story of the Connecticut Yankees we know nothing, it may be true or false. But the truth of the matter is that there are mean men among the Yankees and among the Hoosiers, mean men among the Radicals, a few, and mean men among the Democrats, lots of them. In the Radical party they get mean after election sometimes, and in the Democratic party their meanness secures their nomination and election. Get out of your glass house, Democratic and Hoosier neighbor, before throwing any more stones at Yankees and Badicals.

A REVOLUTION IJT WOMAN'S Costume.

Free Longs and Free LogiH-Blfnrca-led Garments to be Adopted.

From the Revolution]. Mr

Dsa.il

Mrs.

Stanton

You talk of gardening for woman but would you set her to gardening in such a dress as this? I have had a little experience in this direction, and I know what uphill work to "garden'Li a petticoats. Do#tf goes* toe tp^di and up go the hoops. Your skirts are under your feet, and you are worn out in a little while without having accomplished anything. Women would need to have twice the strength of men to work in the costume now worn and I am quite satisfied that the reluctance to open new employment for woman has been owing to.this cause more than to any other. The inconvenlence under which she has labored has been so palpable that men have felti without reasoning about the matter, that she ought not to be asked to do anything. Man's conditon as a worker hus shaped his dress, and if woman would work it must shape hers also.

Av-your report of tfie meeJing of Sorosis—Whatever that may bef—1 find a resolution condensing "fashions that expose the person more than good taste or good sense would warrant," &c. Now, was that resolution aimed at the tight waists and tight bssque which give such immodest prominence to tbe bust? or at the hoops, which at the slightest provocation, make such unseemly displays?

Exposure of that wbioh was intended to be hidden attracts attention and excites coarse thought but that woman should allow the world to discover tbat Bbe is a creature with arms and legs, is not exposure. She cannot make use of the members which God has given for her use, without wearing garments that take their shape. Are man and woman of the same species If so, why is it necessary that they shouid appear so widely different?

A dress tbat more nearly resembled that of man would render woman less copspicaotts, and tbgrgrdra'Woro ~a"t ease in public public places. She would ndt have to brazen her front as she does in her present attire, which seems to be particularly designed to attract attention to her sex.

I could talk great deal on this subject tat-'ttjmay th|t I, :We a$f 'a little imprudent in saying this much I think you will forgive me, however for I ieel sstisfiedJihALj^wilLha .able to understand tbe just indignation of a woman Vrho has tried gardening in petticoats •Very truly yours, Mrs L.

This was fanlfteft Has Mr.THSODOBBgraTOKanf|bat' It -watf- Yankee 1 tight to assert a falseipqd h|i&ujgi}h* per which he edits is nominally a religious paper? How dares he to state Jthat

It has been

something of a wonder to me since I began to read the Revolution th^t you should ha*e*ltfiftS$t&Jte§r ^on, sjitjept.. of Woman's Dres3. Surely,' this is a matter of the first importance! The suffrage cannot do woman much good, nor can anything else, so long as she wears hoops and long skirts. To preach work to woman in her present gear seems to me absurd. When she presents herself for work, her otter unfitness is so otuious tbat no argument on the subject is necessary.

The "Joy Claim" Troubles. From tha Chicago Bepublican About four years ago,a few capitalitts in Connecticut forijbed a company for the purpose of investing in Western lands, and after considerable invesieation, a proposition was made to thfe United States Government to purchase the Cherokee lands, near tbd southern line of Kansas, at$l per acre. The bargain was closed^ so far as the' officials in Washington could do so, b\4t the bill was defeated ifa tho Senate and that ended the matter.

About a year afterward, James F. Joy and a number of railroad caphalists went to Washington with a bill, offering $1,25 for the tracts in question, and after considerable-opposition it ptissed, and tbe transfer was made at the price named. The tract consists of about 8,000,000 acr^ of the finest land in the West—rich in everything ihit is necessary for a highly proej}eWus.agTi3$httra] rdgion. The Republican 6ppe8ea both the Connecticut and the Joy schemes—on the principle that it WaS "wrbng to sell such l&gttract of land "to atiy one ccrj^orstion or company but the lobby at Washingtop was vigilant and its labors effective. Despite of all that could be urged by the opponents of vast monopolies, the bill became a law, anduhe 8,01)0,000, acres «t land were handed oVer to Joy

colleagues. Of course these lande, though rich and valuable, could not be made available for marketable purposes without communication with tbe East-r-hence the scheme to build a railroad from Kansas City to Fort Scott, running through those lands. This railroad m's in .process of construction, and our latest dispatches from that re•gion inAirmus that tbe settlers have risen en masft attd driven off the" men employed in this undertaking.

We are not surprised at this. Thousands of settlers have occupied the lands in question, and improved them, with the hope some day of being enabled to preempt and purchase them from tbe United States Government, whenever the landi should come into market. Of course the "Joy Purchase^ prevents this: and the seitlers have organized and resolved tS drive from the country all who have any connection whatever, either with the "Joy Claim" or the Missouri River, Fort Sjott and Gulf lt&ilroad. According _to pur latest advice!, a tfeign of terror pr^vafled throughout the entire Cherokee country, and tba railroad employes have beetl forced to abandon their work/ ander threats,* should they resume i^ ol being tarred aud feathered or hung:
