During that' discuesion Senor CAgTELAB, in' reply to the Church rspresentiaU ]3ia» Cenor MAHTKBOLA, delivered a speech which will be preserved in the'.archivee of mankind not lees for its array of facts than for its almost matchless eloquence* Here Is his magnificent peroration:
Does Senor Manterola believe the terrible dogma that the children are respoh Bible for the sins.of their fathers? Does Senor ilan»efola Relieve that the Jews of to-day are the Sjptme as those who crucified Christ? I do not believe it! I am more ot a Christian than to do so. Great is God In Sinai! Calvary. The God nailed to a Croat, wounded, transfixed, *, crowned with thorns, gall on His Jips, and 'yet Saying: "Father, torgive thorn forgiVe my murderers forgive my persecutors,' for they know not what they do. Great is the religion of Power, but greater is the religion of Love I Great is-the religion of implacable Justice, but gteator is ttfe religion of the pardoning mercy. And I, in the name of that religion —I In the name of the Gosjflel, come here to ask that you will inseribfc'-^n the front of your fundamental oojie 'iJJeBg.ious liberty I"—that is to say, "Liberty, fraternity and equality among ill mankind."
A correspondent of thd New York Times, who was present in the Chaofberj gives the following vivid description of the scene that ensued- He says- "It is impossible to describe^the jjJFeci of this peroration and the scene wETch occurred as the gifted orator sat down. The ap plause was immense, eleotrical and repeated again and again. As be flung Vi "himself, almost exhaust^, i§f6 his seat, he was instantly eurrounded bydoaens of his
Republican friends,- some grasping his hands, others embracing him, and others even kissing him. Tears we£e even seen running'down tnan'y a cheik, not only Among the Deputies, but in the diplomat and press tribunes abovo. Impelled, as it were, by one .common impulse, the memberB of tfie majority including JFioDEKOLA and others of the Ministry, left their seats and, rushing oyer to CASTELAB were quite aB^demonstrative in their approval as the Republicans. They in their turn shook his hands,' embraced him kissed him. The excitement even extended itself to the President of the Cham ber RIVEBO. Hastily ringing his bell he declared the session over, and the next moment descending from his 'tribune saw him embrace ftantir CASTELAB and kiss him on bath cheeks.
"The speech has been the universal topic of conversation ever since. !ln the streetB, in the clubs, and in the press has been justly lauded as the death-blow to religious ^intolerance, and to the pow er.of the clergy in Spain. Even ..the newspapers which may be said to be th most anti-republican,L and whifih have hitherto always advesely criticised the speeches and ideas of CA8WL\^are full of commendation of this last effort, and boast of him as a 'national glofyj'l'

CHICAGO, which is "great in all other matters, is peculiarly so in providing for the education of her children. The Board of Education of that city has sent its es. timates of expenditures for the ensuing year to the Common Council Among the items are $500,000 to build fltteen new brick school-houses and $167,000 for sites for the same. These school-houses will give accommodation to about 12,000 cbil dren. It is estimated that there are now upward of 20,000 children in the city who ought to be and are not attending schoo because of the ^ant of school building At tho last Legislature, the Commo11 Council was authorized to issue school bondi for this purpose to tbe extent of $700,000. Tne buildings proposed to be erected are to consist of five sixteenroom, and ton twelve-room structures—all to be substantially constructed of biHick.
GENEBAL QUMADA, the newly-ap-pointed generalissimo of the armies of revolutionary Cuba, is a soldier by birth and training. Por some eight years or more of his life he has served with distinction in the armies of Mexico, enjoying high command and a brilliant reputation. His celebrated flank movement at Bayamo, executed some months ago, and whose details are yet fresh in the public mind, stamps him as a soldier of first merit. In more than one refipect, physically and mentally, be resembles Gen. SHIBMAV. His selection for supreme military command inspires confijnce and insures fighting.

Bomance in Real Life. Iowa paper of a recent date gives the particulars of a romantic story which borders somewat on the marvellous. Years ago a Pennsylvania farmer loved and married a charming young girl that lived near him. After the marriage time passed on, and soon the farmer con tracted a taste for liquor, which frequent ly got the best of him. His wife remon strated with him, which on oce oc ciseion ended by tbe husband stabbing her, with a butcher tnife. He left pre cipitately, supposing be had killed her and hid hipaself in the West, where in a few years he became a prosperous and wealthy merchant. The wife in tbe meantime re covered^ and after living alone for five years married again. Her husband how ever, died at tbe expiration of a year, and she also went to tne West. Then the incredible part of tbe story appeared. The parties met-again after their long sepa ration, and became intimately acquainted but neither recognized the other. An en gagBttferiii^entered" into, which results in marriage and, upon the wife disrob ing in the evening., be notices the scar made by his hand many years ago, and suddenly recognizes her as his wife of former years. Here is a chancel for story writers. 1
Fred. Douglass and the Haytlan Mission. To the Editor of the Rochester Union
My feelings are of little importance to the public, yet if they are made the sub jeot of public remark you will agree with me that they ought to correctly described You will, therefore, please allow me say in your bolumns that I do not feel slighted by the present Administration at Washington. I have neither sought desired nor expected the Haytian mis sion. No rspirations-for the office question have been disappointed. The thing of which I have complained was telegram, repeated in various form's, from Washington, stating that Fred. Douglass had written to his friends at Washington that he would not accept the Haytian mission—that he could not afford it—thst he had made up bis mind never .to leave the country, &c. 1. I objected to this because it placed me in a false and ridiculous position, am not so weak and foolish as to decline publicly an office which has never been tendered me. 2. I objected to it because it placed me before the country as measuring my du ties strongly by the one oriterion of "dol lars and cents/' and gives an exaggera ted impression of the pecuniary value my present vocation. 3. I objected to it because it represent ed me as being so absurdly patriotic that I would not leave the country for any purpose, however important, and because it was calculated to remove me from tbe list of colored men who would accept flee tendered by President Grant. I am a modest man, but am perfectly compe tent to decline or accept office, if lender ei, without the assistance of officiou friends, who have pro:umed to act for me in this instance.
Respectfully your?, FRKPEBICK DOUGLASS.

Friend Betrayed, Murdered Thrown overboard.
Tbey left work on the line o| the railroad, went to Cincinnati, put togother what money they had and purchased a boat, stocked^ it with goods and sturted down tbe Ohio river on a trading trip. While they were fitting out the trip, Scanlan lured the wife of Thompson from him, and it was alleged that the two were living on intimate terms. One day Thompson caught his wife and Scanlan in such a place es to fully confirm his suspicions. Incensed at this he drew a hatchet and struck Scanlan ovor the head with it inflicting a very severe wound. Scanlan wa« confined to his bed for a number of days, and, after getting well the mattter was apparently Fettled and the party continued on their tradine trip.
-X-:
Nothing more waa heard of the party until a few da^s since, when the woman Catherine Wicks returned to the city and gave thH"iiyformatun, that cn tho fontteenth of March, ScanlanTassisted by Mrs. Thompson, had murdered Thompson on the boat when it Was on this side of the river, a short distance above Evansville. She related the facts as we have given them"fibove, aBd slaTedftirtber that after Thompson jrasmurdered, Scanlan tied a rock around the neck of the body, out it in a skiff, went out into the river and sunk
Upon this information a warrant was issued for the arr©3t of the parties, which js now in the hands of the officers. Where
the
parties have gone is not known, as they have left the boat.

The way our troops are "civilizing off the face of the earth" the Alaska Indians father beats anything in our previous history. Both our army and navy have gone at them this time, and they have gloriously "destroyed various villages and stockaded forts" of the ancient inhabitant,—of the poor littlestumpy troglodytes who have owned tbeN snow-clad region and lived on its fish ever since the days of Noah. We are told that in this case, it was thought better to destroy the huts than to execute the people, as they place little value upon their lives, but will fcr dreadfully for want of shelter. This is altogether shocking. It is about time now for General Grant to do what be threatened some time ago—-withdraw our troops from Alaska altogether, if they cannot govern it without killing off tbe few icy-fingered Kakes who give life and diversity to its vast ^now-covered soli*, tudes. v.. mmmmm—w——
