cans or Democrats^ but I shall anrwer iiis question in rogjii*r Irish style by asking anothei', and that is, where has the Democratic party favored our juntrymen

with any of its gifts. The gentleman, if such he is, may say tbat tho Democratic party is not now in pawer and has r.ot therefore a oh*nco to make appointments ot oonfer f.ivow, but I shall give hitn tba privilege, particularly as ho appears to mtid^r bis -'upper story" of spp^rior |i^ateriftl |t tiling his memory^b'ick to'that "good olo" time when the Democratic party

citing

P.

CBeilly for Mayor has grown stronger every day since his name was first an nounoed. Hundreds of Irishmen declare their purpose to vote for their gifted and popular countryman. Everything indi oates his triumphant election to-day Let the- JSepublieans pome out in mam and give the Pemooracy such a defeat as shall keep them quiet for a long time to

a few -partif^lars tbat took place in this city under my o»n observation. Two years ago when the Democratio candidate foj Marshal at the. present t^me, Mr. Crowe, a man "who s"ball reoeive the unanimaus Irish vote, was endavoring to gat the nomination for the sameoffice, we And bim left in tbe "dark corner" while his more favored and bettsr wished German friend was-permitted-to enjoy tha happiness-of a "jofttbms" during a term of two years. Also last fall another of my ooyntryman was under the impression that the good old party.whom he had served so long would as a reward, for his efforts in her behalf, bestow upon him that "fat take" known--as the office of Sheriff. But the nomination was not conferred upon the Irish aspirant.—

Whether the convention thought that the rich matter of such an office would not agree with Irish digestive organs, or whether they considered it too great $ boon to bestow upon an Irishman, it is not for nje to say as tha convention knew far better than I can conjure.— The nomination was however reserved for a native born oitizen who was subsequently elected and now making me'rry over his good fortune in having such zealous supporters in the IriBh people. A people who have proyen themselves to bo so loyal to tbe Democratic party tbat if the very men whom tbey most wished to be a candidate dared to come out independent after ha bad been defeated in the convention, they would denounce him a? not acting according to tbe namo of Democrat, which he professed to be, and consequently deny him their support.

But matters have taken a different course this spring. At the Republican primary election we find tbe Republican party, that has ever*been censured for its hatred of any thing Irish or Catholic, bestowing upon P. B. O'Reilly tbo nomination of the Mayoralty, its highest gift at tbe present time, by a large majority. At tbe Democratic Convention, low and behold 1 instead of it being as it always has been in such pluces with tha American or German elemtm predomiating, we find tbat Irishmen have full sway, an Irish ilaishal is nominated, Irish Counciimon have been previously nominated at the Ward meetings, an Irish Treasurer might nave been on xbe ticket if he was r.axioue for tbe position, and we might also have an Irish Clerk nominated. Wby, hur' rah, tbe good, old Democratic party is truly the best friend of the Irishmen. See what tbe has done for hiin now. But is there not a motive in this 7
