The publication of a communication is no evidence that the editors adopt its sentiments, The author is alone responsible fotthem. OToara-

Communications should be addressed to •the Editors ot jtbe not to individuals.

THE Indianapolis Journal says Senator MOBTOK will remain in "Wahsington for several days to look ^fter matters of interest to hit constituents..

Tax Journ&l of yesterday has the following pathetic snivel: "A man had better lote~ all his possessions than to lose his liberty and virtue!"

Will our afflicted neighbor give us the tnodera Democratic definition of **liberAnd, if it wouldn't be too mucn trouble, will it favor the public with & brief trektise on "virtue," according to recog" nlziH JDemccratio authorities?

M. CLAUDE BSBABS, president of the French Medical Academy, Inclines to the opinion that there is no suolj •'thing as a science of medicine so far in the hi#_ tory of the world, but that the '"whole study and practice as yet has been'experimental and empirical. Although Bomewhat uncomfortable and startling, thty is a conclusion to which many thoughtful people have at least a strong"bias. We commend the honest doubt of the distinguished French savant to the attention of the gentlemen of the medical profession of Indiana. p.

THE Journal doesn't like the Election Law just enacted by the General Assembly. As this measure will vastly diminish the burden of taxation, wbfftft'cian woek no injustice to any community, it is natural that Democrats should oppose it. It is a measure ofcsonnd practical public economy. hence it is anti-Demo-cratic. Our neighbor expresses the general sentiment of its party in these words: "It is nonsense to talk about economy a W

The difference between tnatiro parties is hero clearly defined. Bepublicans believe that it is sound sense to both "talk about" and pfaotice "economyrin siich matters," while the Demooracy have ceine toegard "economy" as mere "nonsense."

THK list of Friends (Shakers), rtaeht)y appointed as Indian agents, includes some of the best and purest men j£3that denomination, who will soon inaugurate the new Indian policy.—Ind. Journal.

The well-informed editor of the Indianapolis Journal probably does not intend yiy injustice to the Society of Friends, but he could say nothing more offensive to that eminently respectable body than to pronounce them "Shakers."' They resemble the Shakers, in their creel and mode' of life, no more than they do the Mortons, or Latter Day SaintB. One of the peculiarities of Shakerism is celibacy. Indeed) this is the great, fundamental idea,of that sect, while the Frionds—nicknamed Quakers—"marry and are given in marriage'' without let or hinderance. In another matters of belief arid practice, tW sects are equally at variance.

SECRETARY BOUTWKLL has determiAed to sell hio surplus gold, at regulaf'piriode, to the highest bidder. He will fell gradually as it may be needed for com. mercial purposes, and at his weekly%iiles will dispose of from a half to one million of dollars, as he maylMBij'lSo learisTng df the demand of customs, &o. He will tell without regard to the price it brings, as he believes that the premium on gold should properly be regulated by ffre ~Uws of demand and supply, and that any action of tho government to keop the price down, or put it up, is vicious -and improper. He doQ3 not believe in government secrets of this kind, and will not allow anything to be done while he is in the department, to give rise to suspicion such as were current under Secretary MCCTTLLOCH, and by means of which so many men were believed to have made money by the rise and fall of gold?

This is the famous "Beau Hickman," or what there is left of him. His eccentricities have furnished columns of paragraphs fbrtrewspapero alt overttfe Country, though to see him now one would naturally wonder how he ever came to get a national notoriety. He couldn't have done it anywhere but in Washington. ...

IN REGARD to tho treaties, twelve, in number, which claimed the attention t)f the Senate when it convened in extra session the disposition made of them all, porhaps, was, in the main, accordant to popular opinion. The action taken upon soveral of them, however, is open to c?mmeut. Time will exemplify the wisdom of their treatment. So far aaliie Alabama claims convention, tlhVm^st important of all the treaties, was concerned, the action of the Senate upon it was indubitably in full harmony with -publio sentiment in this country and the same can also be aid of the four naturalisation treaties with' Wurtemberg, Hesse, Baden and Belgium. While the sacrifice has not been wholly in vain, the facts elicited are few and mostly unsatifactory.
