PEBIOCXCALS

&o.—The Galaxy, for

May, with a rich and varied lilt of Contents is laid on our table by Bartlett & Grundy, who, by the way, have just filled their store with fresh invoices of books and stationery, as will be seen by their rard in another column.

A. H. Dooley favors us with Frank Leslies' Ladiorf Magazine for May, magnificently illustrated. .V.A A

Aab, at the Postoflice lobby, eettds us Harper's Bazar for May first, an attrac tive number.

A COBIOBITT.—Some

ofE. M."WalmBley, EBq., to the Library, contain some specimens of the manner of doing business in theeaflydbys of Amer. ica. The papers and maauteripts will, perhaps, well repay an examination by the curious. The inventory of goods be. longing to "Joseph Bockhill" is an odd document, showing the nicety of detail as evinced Ly the items, "Leather Breezes," "Crooked Mouthed Cow," "Great Wheel Keel Chest," &o &o. The indenture, written ne&rly a hundred years ago, shows a quality of ink which puts to irtiame most manufacturers of the. present day.

Robert Rockhill's will reveals great oare in the disposal of his possessions. The Petition to certain Mftrgyori provide a by-road for the use of "•'New Jorsey Planters" written the j*eitr!722 is a quaintly worded manuscript.

The "freshest advices'' in the "Pennsylvania Chronicle" for September 7th, 1767, will cause a smile in this age of railroads and telegraphs,

VJKLOCIPXDI ORDINANCI.—The

veloci-

pedists of tbe city have respeotfully obeyed the ordinance passed by the Council at its last meeting, prohibiting the use ol velocipedes, under the assurance of tbe most if not all tbe members of that body that its restrictions will be somewbftt modified at tbe meeting this evening In justice to all parties this should be done. That which is needed is an otdi* nance for the protection of pedttirian»t uot the prohibition of velocipedes. Such •we learn was the objectof the member who introduced the ordinance, but after it was offered It was changed to read as published, and hurriedly passed.

WQ

are

authorised to state that velocipedists are in favor of so amending the ordinance as to prohibit riding on all paved sidewalks in front of business houses, with an additional section for fast or reckless riding anywhere in the city—for instance, make it an offense to pass a pedestrian at a rale faster than a walk. This will have a tendency to send all velocipedists, who ride for pleasure or recreation, to the outskirts of the city and less trequenved walk?, While it will not prevent one from crossing the central portion of the city by using proper caution and an observance of tbe rights of pedestrians.
