Thb government blue book says C}1. Nelson's Mexican Mission is worth bat $6,000 per year.—JqurrtaV.

A later and equally YeHable authority, the Tribune Almanacpage 51, gives t^e salary of the Mexican mission as £12,$Q0 and we have no doubt the statement is correct. According to this there are but two "Envoys JBixtraordink^y and Ministers Plenipotentiary" who receive lesB than $12,000 each. Those two are the Ministers to Ohili and Peru .who receive $10,000. All the rest are rated at $12,000, except the English and Fr«pci missions which are rated at $l7,5 00n£ach There are some twenty "Ministers Kesident" who receive $7,900. No Foreign Mission is rated lower tbfcn the hist named sum, with the single exception oi the Liberlan Mission, the salary of whicsh is $4,000. Even the Minister to Hayti receives $7,500.

Sqmi kewsfapzbs have given currency to the report that the Hon. James FWilson, of Iowa, was not invited to a seat in the Cabinet, because bis legislative record would not bear scrutiny. There are the be3t grounds for Mating that there is not a shadow of color for these reports to rest upon. The .Chicago Tribune publishes the facta ia the case as follows "It is well known in Washington that Mr. Wilson was tendered by GeneraL Grant the office of Secretary of State in the original construction of his Cabinet, and that the appointment of Mr. Washburne to that place was intended to be merely complimentary, the latter having been previously booked for the French missioa. Having been nominated and confirmed as Secretary, Mr. Washburne unexpectedly entered upon the discharge of the duties of the office. Mr. Wilson was thus pieced in a very embarrasaiog position, which1 he endured as long as he deemed consistent with his own dignity and the dignity of the office. He then declined the position peremptorily, expressing, however, his unabated confidence in the sincerity of lhe„President. The choice of a new Secretary was then made, Mr. Hamilton Fibh was selected.— Mr. Fish, however declined to take charge of anbody's leavings, and his first act was to make a new act of appointments in place of those arranged by bis predecessor"

Xlio Memory of Lincoln in France There wsb recently- held in Paris a meeting to commemorate the memory of Abraham Lincoln. After Professor Lsboulays came Mr. Cochin, the principal orator. He traced the life of Lincoln from his boyhood up to his death, and held bim up as a model of a patriot, statesman and Christian man. He quoted from his-ilpeeches and. writings to show tbat he was a greet political thinker, and that his ideas were of that class of elementary ideas on which great govern menls may be built and great deeds accomplished.

If you have not yet awakened to the fact in America, says a Paris letter, you will seon do so, tbat Lincoln is hereafter to take a eland as one of the great land mark* in history. If you do.not yet com prebend the immensity of the role he played in the- political progress of man kind, these people do. While you are still embarrassed with certain crudities in his character, these people 6ee nothing but his grandeur, and desire to see noti^ ing more.

FIRE IN FLEMING COUHTI, KY.

Four Children Burned to Death—He roic Condnct of a Boy Twelve Tears Old.

On lest Tuesday night the residence of Mr. Nelson Hurst was burned to the groand, and fbur of his children perished in the flames. Mr. Hurst lived withinr mile and a half of Poplar Plains in Flem ing county, and on the night of the destruction of hi? house, had gone with his wife to the residencd'of his father, where he had determined to remain until the morning. His family of seven children remained at his homo in the care of his eldest daughter, a young lady abjut fifteen or sixteen year*. At ton o'clock Mr. Hurst'saw a bright ligbt in the di rection of bis residence, and h.astened toward it as rapidly as possible. He had more than a mile to travel before xeached it and when he arrived at the scene it was too-late to render any assistance. Foor ofhls -children had met death in the terrible fire, and the three survivors were standing h61ple*s and neftrly naked in the yard. One little boy of 12 years, had exhibited wonderful daring and selfpossession. 'When he waB roused by the fire he ran to the assistance of the younger children, of whom he Baved three, and he was engaged in drawing the fourth from the flames, when he was destroyed by the fall of the burning, roof. Such heroism as was exhibited by this brave child has rarely been excelled.

It is not known whether the fire ori ginated in an accident or was the work of an incendiary, tfhe children were evidently sleeping at the time, else they might easily have e3caj»ed. It is probable that" tbose who .vere destroyed were suffocated by the^smokei so that when the flames reached them they were insensible to pain. It is a remarkable fact that only the youngest children were saved. The eldest, including the young lady in charge of the bouse, were almost certainly ^unocated before tbe alarm had been given. Such a terrible calamity ha|s never occurred Within our recollection in this section of country, and-Mr. Hurst has the sympathy of all our people in this great loss.—Maysiille Republican

A curious lawsuit was lately brought before an English court, in which tbe rights of her Majesty's fat subjects were humorously involved. It was an attempt to compel Lsdy Glamis to make a certain public passage on her property wide enough to admit very stout people. We hoar from the correspondent of tbe New York Times tbat the velocipede manufacturers of Paris find it difficult to supply tbe increasing demand. Michaux the inventor, still maintains the lead in the manufacture of these articles, and must feel at this moment very.like a man in a dream. ,For years he starved while trying to introdaco the vehicle the money he gained at his anvil was absorbed by the new invention, and it was only after sending sons and workmen for a year driving through the streets, tbat tbe public eye becamefamliiar enough with it to venture to buy it. It is only eighteen months since M. Michaux commenced to sell seriously to the public, and now he works half a thousand men and increases tbe number every day. The average price of velocipedes is three hundred franc?, and at this rate there is one-half profit, so that M. Michaux is already at tbe head of a fortune For once, therefore, the inventor gets his reward.
