On the ooqtrary, as wtT know, the rooms devoted to ladies ife ihdJTreas ury Department, initdad of demoralizing breathe out an atmosphere of purity and grace, of quiet manners and orderly de portment, that is easily remarked.'"

We believe the letters of "HamKah Ttlkr" bave done very grave injustice and are surprised that the Independent should be the ehaunel for such indiscriminate abuse and slaoder. Had the first letter appeared in almost any other paper, we should have passed it by in si lence but the high character..of that psper seemed a voucher for the truth of assertions that we now belleYe, upon suf* flcient evidence, to have been cruelly false. Having confidence in tbe high character of the editor of the Independent, we believed that he must be informed as to tbe truih of oharges affecting the reputation of widows at.d orphan girls before ho would give them publicity.— This confidence induced ns to comment on those charges in a manner that could be justified only by a well-grwinded b*-4 lief in their truth. A DETECTIVE'S EXFEBIENOE

A. FEMALE FORGER,

From tbe N. 0. Plc»ynn«-]

"Not many years ago," said Mr.

•'the mercantile community were annoyed by an immense amount of spurious paper most dexterously put in circulation. Checks were presented at the prin cipal banks by the firms of prominent houses, and money in the aggregate •(mounting to nearly fifty thousand d"l lars, obtained upon ft. The peculiar cir oumistaoces of the esse disclosed the fact that the forger resided in the city, and for months we were on the qui vive to detect the criminal. Every new fac«, ev ery stranger whose occupation and pursuit were not thoroughly understood, Were subjected by Mr. I and myself to a most riigid scrutiny. Slill we were at fault- It is not difficult to find out the person who is

nOT

guilty of an offense

the trouble la to discover who is. And thus our search went on. Baffled in one direction, we took another. Aside frem the reward, whfoh was ample, our pride was interested in detecting the person who, almost before our eyes, practiced such open frauds. One day I saw a lady paying for a bill of goods with a check Before sbe had time to leave tbe store I obtained a look at the paper, and was satisfied it was not genuine. Still I was not certain. The lady was deeply veiled, and I was subjected to tbe alternative of following her. This I did, and traced ber home.

It was a beautifal little cottage, with a large j»rd and garden. Taste and culture bad fashioned the graveled walks and trained tbe dense but beautiful foliage into parterres, as curious as novel and pretty. Vines crept over the portion and trailed along the network of the gallery. The white and red hollyhock blooir#i at the gate, and the margin of the Walts and tedded with violets and the sweet«soented verbena. The perfume of orange blossom! Ogled with the odor of the roeekand tbe senses were delighted with the beauty that pervaded the pla09.

I fastened back to the plica where tbe check was passed, and wnioh Mr. .1 bad already ascertained to have been forged. We had now obtained a clue, which, if carefully pursued, we were satisfied would lead to the detection of the criminal.

We waited until morning, and it was than determined that I should visit her alone. I did so, and found the lady seated a pleasant little parlor, lookiog oat on the miniature lawn. The room was exquisitely furnished, and breathed an air of evident refinement. It was pw ».'•* $ miwweM .*a*» ifefS «. »»jev ,•«*? ... cj* e-«T vfr

fiiifd up as a p^n-nnt. loungi«g piace, half librarv, half music room. Beautifal paintings hung from the walls, and in a receaa was an elegant piano. Near it

a statue of the Titianees Mnemosyne, and opposite it stood a marble creation of the dance-loving Terpsichore and from tbe centrtf of the richly carved writing desk rose a beautiful Polymnia, with her finger pressiog the lips, brimming with song.

wjw

Cases filled with books, and vasea of Arlabesque of gold, filled with flowers, were scattered through the room. Tbe lady reclined in an easy chair, and re£ ceived tbe announcement of any name with evident embarrassment. Still she received me with great politeness, and inquired "to what cireamstance she was to attribute my business?" "I do not know, madam, that it is to you, as yet but may I inquire if your husband is in "I am a widow, fir." "But you have a business agent" "No,sir I live alone on a small annuity." '{Indeed ... "It is true, sir but you" will pardon me if I inquire tbe purport of these questiofli?" "Madam!" I rrjoined, "there is no doubt some mistakB*"about it, but tbe drsif} you gave yesterday to Messrs. H. & Cc.r is a forgery." •Sir!"' The tone was indignant, and tbe faca was white with terror rather than passion. "It is SB I stated, madam here is the paper," and I took from my pocket the check and showed it to her. "What is the purport of all this?" "To inquire from whence you obtained it" "That I cannot tell you, sir!" "I trust, madam, you will reconsider your last remark for othecwise it will be my duty to arrest you as tbe criminal." "And you would do this?" "It would be my duty."

Her eves, lost on tbe instant their eager look, and she turned aside her head. I could perceive from the working of her countenance that she was thinking in tently—rapidly..-Emotions, first of terror, then of determination, and then of entroaty, cha«ed themselves over her face with tbe rapidity of thought. It a grand face—noble in expressions-evin-cing intellect of no common* order.

I could not believe Rbe was guilty, did not, until she turned tome with the words: "Take rae to jail. I alone guilty I" "But, madam, .reflect, you are con demring yourself 1" "I know it—lead me away—I say to you again, I am guilty!,'

It may seem strange to yotf, but evea despite ber_ her words 1 could not believe this strangely beautiful lady was in earnest. There ws9 to my mind a great wrong somewhere the la. dy was sacrificing herself to save some one else. Still I had no alternative, but to take her into custody. I placed her, however, in charge of an officer and still left ber at her own house. While I was gone to the city, but a few hours, she contrived to send a note away. It reach ed the person it was meant for—an hour after the the lady was dead. Sbe had perished by her on hand, from shame and a broken heart.

Years afterward we ascertained, the real culprit was her son! She had con fessed a sin that she had never commit ted, to give him a^opportunity toes cape-,

Murder of a Char lesion Bail'

road Conductor.

A DISPUTE AND ITS C6NSKQUENCES —BASE ASSASSINATION.

From the Memphis Avalanche.] At Courtland, Ala., one hundred and sixty miles from this citj, on the Mem phis and Charleston Railroad, there is hotel where tbe persons employed on that road frequently take meals as they pass on the trains. Some days ago tbe keeper of the hotel, Mr. Parsball, demanded of the conductor of one of tbe trains—T. Oates, wbo is from North Carolina—pay ment for meals bad by a brakesman on his train, for which he considered Oates responsible. A dispute followed, which became an angry one, and harsh words and blows passed. Parsball ordered Oates never to enter his bouse again, but Oates replied that it was a public place, and he bad aright to get his meals there if he conducted bimseif peaceably, aud paid for what ho bad.

On Tuesday evening Oates' train left this city on the Up trip, and on reaching Courtland, yesterdey morning, Mr. Oates went into Parahall'a hotel to get his breakfast. Ptirshall was angry at this inattention to bis wishes, and another al tercatton took place, at which violent language was usad, and Parshall length pulled out a pistol and ilred Oates. The latter then took out his pit. toi and returned the lire neither of the shots took effect, but tbe bullet from Oates' pistol pasied through Parshall hat. Marshall tbeu ran up stairs and Oates left tbe house* lo go to his train when Parshall, who had posted himself at the window above with a double-bar reled shot-gun, fired at him as ha passed The aim was only .too true, and seven buck-ahot were lodged in the unfortunate man's left breast, and his death was al most instantaneous. Oatos leaves a wife and child bebind him, who are residing at Huntsville, Ala. Whether Parshall escaped or was arrested, the people on tbe train did not ascertain.

LOVE AND MUBDEB.

A Lady Killed by her Lover—A Double

Fatal Dnel.

From the Memphis Avalanche,].

The steamer Richmond, which passed

up from New Orloans yesterday, learned

at Grand Gulf the particulars^pf one of

those tragedies of passion that appear

more

like romance than reality. In tbe

country at some distance from Grand

Gulf reside two respectable families, those

ef Cusbing and Andrew*. Miss Andrews

was a lovely girl of seventeen, well ac-

comflshed and of unusualy fascinating

manners. Mr. Ousbing's sjn,a youth of

twenty, had been at ached to her from

theirearly childhood, and as be grew

older his affection became an ardent, ab

sorbing passion. A short time ago he

made a formal offer of his band, wben,to

bis intence disappointment and mortiflca

tion, his offer was firmly though court

eously refused. He broided over his ill-

rewarded passion, and become a prey to

jealously, and at length left the neighbor

hood, vowing modly that he would come

back and take his revenge.

On Sunday last, he returned, and, ridding up to Mr. Andrews' house, be beg ged to see Miss Andrews at tbe door, without al ghting. Sbe oair.e out, when he suddenly produced a piitol, fired, shooting ber through tbe body, and she fell on ber face, and died without a struggle. Tbe infatuatfd murderer rode frantically away, but Miss Andrews' brother, breathing fury toward the murderer of bis sister, sprang on a horse and fallow* ed. He came up witb Cushing as the latter was crossing a creek, and fired at him. Cushing jumped trom his horse and took shelter in tbe busb. Andrews, not to be at a disadvantage, did ihesame. A parley ensued, and the two young men agreed to fight according to the code to leave the cover, fire, advance and fire, and again advance, firing, until one of tbem should fait. At the first fire Cushing received a mortal wound in the left shoulder, bnt the men continued to near each other and fire, until thtlr revolvers Were empty- When aseistanee arrived,
