The halls of the college were all open and ladies every where stood rea3y towel come strangers and friends, and conduct hem through tha. building. I availed myielf of the offer of one of these fair »ttendants to thow me the various departments of the institution. We first visited that of Natural History. Closely connected with tfiii magnificent cabinet of .Qeglogy, was that of Zoology,'where were'prepared with the nicest art and displayed to the greatest advantage, specimens of every spVctes' of animals now existing on the globe.

From these attractive# iettre? I was led by my fair guidev-to th^^department of Philosophy &cd ChetoBStry. Here was indeed bewildered by the num ber and variety of instruments lor illustrating and imitating the mechanical and chemical forces df nature instruments and agents for aeperaiting and combining elements converting solids into liquids and then into invisible gases then turn ing them back iffto their original form or Into new combinations. Here seemed to be the most complete triumph of mind over matter. I saw the mightiest forces of nature perfectly obedient to the touch of delicate girls. One young lady was making the sunbeams work:fo? ber. And &the wonders these sunbeams performed under her direction I Another was play log with the- lightning. Another took what appeared a lump of clay and with a few movements of her hand it seemed turned n»e aTew sal! of ttieir fingers among the vials and crucibles they turned substances, which we.de&m worthless, into articles of pos itive valne. From this .LabrauJry, my very kind attd intelligent aonductreaa proposed to how me into theXibrary. On tile way I Inquired tht occasion of the Vast crowd that was gathering. ShsjsXpsesrad tome uprise that I did not know tbis was the centennial of the Bose University. "It had been long anticipatedand extensively published. One attractive feature of .the occason would be thepresenoe of a large number of the alum&fl of the institution —from whom addresses and poems were expected. It would be several houn before the public exercises, and I might Have time to take hafty view of the ifcost interesting fbainree -of the college before the Mtotiag." We were now standing in the Library-—an ample hall —immense and lofty walls coverod with books to the ceiling-*the collected treasures of wit and WiUloa, Me product of the best intellects, of all past ages. ^The room was adorned wtti statues and por traits of -tbe t)«atn(D and wem^n that bad ever lived. -»-a
From the Library We passed into the Art Gallery, flere bebeatk a skylight was a vast eoBectlon of tbQ Works of the best masten la sculpture and paintiog. But I must not linger.
We next entered a.Hall whose walls were covered with portraits of the graduates of the University. They numbered mnra ih«n «1t thousand Arranged in IxJok^caseTTirtire center oRhe -focHH w®r« the prodoctWES of such of these graduates as had becotafar authors. These were works of rotance, history, religion, poetry, romance, &c I took in my hand an elegantly bound v^luase'knd found it to be a history of the founders of the Bose University. It contained a apleodid .«&* graving of tbe man who mad* the original endowment and for whom it was
named, and of ,others, especially two la&ia of Terra Haute, who added to ita funds until they now amounted to about two millions. The volume contained also interesting sketches of the first settlers of Terre Haute. Anothar Volume attracted my attention entitled "Wars with tbe hi." But my guide rather hurried me through these galleries of Art,, hardly allowing a pause to look at the large music room us we passed through it, in -wbioh were some thirty pianos, at which the pupils were taught In classes for ate said.1 must by all means visit tbe Indus, trial Department. -r iil^T SI' 1.
On tbe way I asked her if they taught the girls to work. She gave me a look if doubting whether.! was in earnest and replied with "a serio-comic air, "We don'i teach tbem anything else we consider tbat is all thai girls or boys, man or women ate good for—activity of all their powers of body and mind. We teach our pupils thai humanity iii^eVery sfrsgefof its existence, in every rank and condition is the most sacred thing next to God."— "Theirshe quoted tbafr-eld-line-fraw Ter-_ ence—Eyo homo num, $c. "Every kind of labor," she continued, '-which helps to feed, to clothe, shelter, heal, instruot, or in any way benefit the soul or body of tbe meanest of our race -is noblr, it is godlike.
And whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well. The right way is the easiest, speediewt, cheapest way. And to find that wsy, youthful hands need a guide." it
By tbis time We were in a spacious room, or system of rooms, which I can* not describe. Here were all the facilities for every kind of household labor, from darning a stocking or spreading a table, to all the preparations for a royal banquet. Whatever can contribute to man's phyiscal welfare in every, age and^condilion, was beresystematioilly taught. The girls were, taught how lj convert a hundred mineral, animal and vegetable substances which we now throw away, into food, clothing, or medicine. I felt that this one department of tbe institutionmuEt be. worth millions of money to the State. Here I saw how a virtuous woman can create value, how preserve that value, how consume and enjoy it. Each young lady spent a certain portion of everyday in these rooms. in working whth her hands, under an experienced teacher. The pupils called this department the Bee Hive, and Ferv*t Opus shone in gilt letthers on the walls.
But I was not allowed to hnger here. I must go and Visit the benevolent institutions connected with the university.— These were an asylum for indigent aged pcopls one for orphan children, and one for helpless cripples and deformed persons. Suitable buildings were erectecffor these, in quiet and retired parts of the grounds. A certain number of teachers

As wo sat down ou a rustic seat to.enjoy, for a moment, the scene, 1 ventured to ask her if tluse various ob jects Of industry, art and charity diJ not Interfere with tbat mental culture which is tbe main object of our institutions of learning tihe replied, that all this is a part of mental culture. The body and mind are qna In tfre early stages of education especially, mental and bodily activity are inseparable. The feelings and affections, moral and social, just as really belong to tbe mind as reason and memory and any system of education that does not provide for their eulture is sadly, fatally defective. We admit, however, that the great object at which such schools as this should aim, is to impart to the intellect vigor, activity and skill in investigating and discovering Tru^h. It has taken long time to make the mass of tbe pe^pla understand what constitute) an education. The correct view of tbis subject is now generally taken. Parents understand what is the work teachers have to par form and they demand that work shall h» donet and well done. They do not entrust \hs forming ef tbe mindsi of their children to unskilful hands.— The honor is conceded to this university of doing much to form a correct public opinion on the subject. The public now demand in their teechers the highest qualifications of rnhtd and heart." '-Tberehas been a radio a 1 ohangrin tfie ides of what constitutes-a good scholar.— A hupdried years ago the was censidered the best scholar who could recite the greatest number of pages from tbe -book. Now the bsst scholar is the best thinker— ooa who cffli hold her thoughts on a subjeot till she has' looked through It—=tt!l she knows it—knows it as well as the author of tbe book on whose page it Is presented to ber mind, and for the same reason. This is education, mental strength and skill to discover truth. When this step is reached, the pupil's school eduoa-
now find ber way alone through the fields of knowledge-^the eaglet can now leave the HQit and soar at will through tha realms of thought. She needs no other Incentive than the love of truth."
