jhxjcijpkdi Obdikakc*.—Elsewhere wHl be found theordinancepassed by the City Council prohibiting, under-paeaUy of fine, any person from riding '.'a velocipede on any paved eidewalk or other walk within theoorporate limits." There can be no question in the mind of any oandid person that thia ordinance |l tbo •weeping in iti character—in fact, that the joke is carried too far. An ordinanoe prohibiting the bicycle* from the side* walks of the business portions of the city, witb penalties for fast or reckless riding would be very proper and could be objected to by no order-loving citiaen—in fiot, those velocipediBts who exercise With, the "bicycle for its use and not Hsr-iSbuis-dtsire that some auch restrictions be mad?. It iff no doubt true that a few reckless boys have been the cause of some annoyance to pedestrians. Such should be properly punished and they oan easily be reached by municipal laws already in force, if they are not chastised on the spot. But there are a considerable number of gentlemen in this city who have purohased and are hatiog velocipedes bulit, not tor display Aipoa tbe sidewalks of '-he business streets, but for quiot amusement and recreation on the back titreots. With them the voloclpede is not a toy nor is tho succets'ul mahipu lation of tbe machine an accomplishment to be paraded in public for tbe gratification of gaping curiosity or the aggrava tion of those petple who go into convulsions at the sight of a person on a velocipede. But when we come to tho practical use we find they aro not insignificant and tho contempt which attaches to the superficial uses falls off. For instance take any man who resides in the suburbs of the city, whose business is in-doors, and to whom some exercise 1s indispensable— During pleasant weather he can not only make his daily trips to and from his business, with equal ease and in onafourth the timo he could walk, but his leisure Ttmcrcffr. be profitably employed in short excursions some distance out and around the out-skirts of the town. The exercise is more exhilarating than that of walking, pnd not less beneficial to the system, while the distance traversed in a given time is trebled or quadrupled as the case may be. Outside the hard grav elled streets, the velocipede cannot be pTgp^sd^with auy-etao or comitortr^ Henoe the effect of the present ordinance will be to
keej) them on the principal streets,
frightening
Aorses—one of the very objects
the ordinance is intended to meet.— Besides an ordinance so rigid will be re spected by all law-abiding citizens and constantly violated by the reckless and daring when oat of the reach ofaa officer. j|To repeat, we believe the ordinance can "tw mgJa" acceptable to parties amending so as to prohibit riding on all 'paved sidewalks (which would include all the business portion of the city), with as additional section imposing fine for riding through a crowd, or for passing a pedestrian at a rate faster than a walk anywhere in thetcity. The effect of this will be to drive those who ride, and especially those who desire to ride
fast,
