THXBK is a report, now being -iftd&s** triously circulated for effect on the Town ahip election, that Mr. NATLOB was .defeated in Convention last Saturday, by the Grand Army of the Republic. We are informed by leading members of that organication, that the report is entirely without foundation, utterly false.

Mr. NATLOR waa defeated more by the apathy of his friends, than by the activity of his enemies. The former supposed that his nomination was a foregone cpdcltuioo, and therefore did not take the trouble to make it sury by goingtothe Court Bonie to vote for him. They let the case -ga by default, and are now bound by the immemorial usage of politic organisations to vote for the successful candidate. We huTe no charges to. make against.Mr. NATX.OB'8 administration. In fact'the writer of this article was mote than willing to support him in the Contention, and would have been gratified had a few more of his friends been there to insure his success. But they failed to attend, and by staying away virtually said: "We will trust those who may be there to put a ticket in the field." If there ever was a nomination that should be considered as bindiag on the party making it, that of Capt. MUKPHT must be so regarded.

The Amended Boesty ictMCtiia Agenta. WILLIAM HASWAMAW, Indiana Military Agent, bauea a circular, for the benefit of soldiers, in which be explains the application of the. amended Bounty Act of March 3d, 1868., He atates that olikiaL agents have greatly miarepraaented its provisions, and caused soldiera and-tteir heirs much unnecessary eapemrer and trouble. I

According to Mr. HAKITAUAH—ana from our own recollection of the law we believe he ia entirely cornet—there are but two claaaes of peraona entitled to bounty under this amended act: Filst, the soldier who enlisted for three years and whose muster-in and Aiuater-oat showed him to have aerved lass than three years, although bo was discharged by reason of "expiration of term of service." This class, under the act or July 28th, 1866, received Only fifty dollars. Under the new law they are entitled toify more. The second class are the heirs of soldiers who enlisted for and served three years, and who, on their return home after discharge, were taken sick and died from disease not contracted in the service. Their heirs, under the act of July 28th, 18«6 recaived nothing now they will receive one hundred doliara. Theae are the only part'es benefited by the act of %A 1869.

IT SKXXS that the exodus of French Oaaediaae to this eountry ia steadily in creasing of late, and that at no similar ported within the last twelve years has ihefe beep such a large and continuous •caigfation of agriculturists. A Montreal paper says that the number now leaving weekly by way of that city is over 600, Mid that the great majority are young men. The French Canadians are an industrious sad honest people, and in a very short-time-make excellent Amerieen eittsens. They are rather backward in some respects, owing to the old depressive laws of the Province and its priestly domination but it only needs a brief residence in this country to put them alongside of any other class of the population in en' terprise and intelligence.

Tse Pittsburg Oasette and other papers are makihg light of the fact that so maay distinguished men have lately turned up in Maasechusetu who are willing to accept distinguished offices. It seems that not only two places in the Cabinet, but two first-lass foreign Minions and a large Dumber of the other bigheat positions in the Government are claimed for the "eminent citisens," otherwise called politician^ of Massachusetts. The Gazette aaya that from ten to twelve percent of the entire voting population of Boston are "eminent oitiiens," and that tbeworld now begins to find odt that "not only the hub but the provincial periphery of that equarter creation sparkles and radiates with universal corusoation of statesmanship, This may be true enough: but, then, why Should not the Massachusetts politicians crowd forward as well as the others EatUm Exchange. teair-' Pitfri saBSB99B9i lit

It goes'harder and harder every day with theae hyperborean victims of military civilization but we rather think that if each things go on, We will have to adopt President Grant's, suggestion and withdraw the military from Alaska altogether—after which there will be no more fighting or killing than there waa before tbey went there. All that need to do in Alaska for the present is keep up the ahow of authority, and this could be done well enough by stationin on the coaft a private soldier, who ahouli wave the American flag defiantly at aun rise every morning. —It. SBOBTLT after the Bogers murdei' Meyor Hall offered a reward of $3,500 to any person who would deliver up Logan |[No. 1,) who was minutely described in the Mayor's proclamation. Chancing to see the advertisment some days after, Logan at once went to the police au thoritics with his brother, who formally delivered him up, at required. Logan wMtinatstttly put tinder arrest and con Anement, and was held until recently, when, es thete Wae-not a partiele of evidence of his guilt, he was released. In bis proclamation, the Mayor, said that the reward would be paid, without quibbling or evasion, to whoever delivered up tbe man therein described and, under these circumstances, we do not see how he can refuse to pay it to tbe party that delivered up the Logan who was suspected, but who, after two months, was ehown to be innocent. No reward that may be offered in any subseqent case will be worth a cent, ff advantage be taken of Such quibbliM as the Mayor formally pledged himself to disregard.—Aew Tork Time*.

A Tennessee Ghost Storf.

Frcm the^nozville Whig,} The following is from one of our cor respondents in Fentress county. It certainly a mysterious affair. Beaders will form their own conclusion

On the evening of the 12th ult., about one and a half miles south of Jamestown, a young lady by the name of A1 bertson, distinguished for her piety, prudence and veracity, had occasion to go to the Spring, a short distance from her father's residence, about tbe time the sun was setting, and as she states herself, never thought of_being afraid, for she was alway* characterized for courage beyond her sex. Miss Albertson went tripping along tbe frequented path, apprehensive of no danger whatever, carrying a bucket on each arm and singing a favorite aong. When she reached the spring, it being a small stream, she had to wait some time for the buckets tp replenish so she placed the vessel under the spout, cat down on a stone near by, still singing and on rising to receive ber burden and wend her way home she saw standing before her the figure of a man, with arma extended upward shining as aflame of flre. The girl says tbe light which was reflected from this mysterious via {-.or gleamed and sparkled again# tbe snow on the hillside before her.

While she stood tremblingly gaxing upon tbe radiant image it spoke in a clear and audible tone, "Be not afraid then it began to ascend, and waa soon lost in tha distance above the trees.— The girl made haste to evacuate her po sition, reaching home in a few minuter, exhausted, pale and trembling, relating the circumstance to her parents, and can not since be prevailed on to revisit the scene of so much terror to her unless quite a number of persons accompany her.

No onehas been able to comprehend or even cocjecture what the atrangs visiter was or what was its mission. Noonehae the alighteat idea that the young lady dissembles in regard to the mysterious figure, because they know she is incapable of anything so wicked or debasing therefore we leave it to a thinking community to demonstrate.
