pels tu *o&• reports derogatory lo*he moral character of men in official stations. It would be more pleasant to .the only of tbe VbtoM of fWWte-wrmto, to hold their moral excellencies up to public view model* for general imitation, "But we bare fallenSpi too little of the laft« k- pfkntW^vA when much of the former demands atten tion. f***5—

Our re&dera are aware that, for along time past, there bare been indications calculated to induce the belief that the generous intent, of tha 'government, in establishing female clerkship* in some of the departments at Washington, has been perverted to the basest purposes that instead of famishing needed employment to worthy women, the departments have been crammed with females of more than .questionable character. 01 late these reports have taken tangible shspe. We have hertofore printed extracts from a letter written by a respectable lady and published in the Mew York ladcptndent in which she says, whatli no &>ubt true, that Congressmen urge the appointment of their mistresses upon tie Departments who are admitted without examination and draw pay without labor, to tha ex elusion of decent and necessitous women

It is bad enough t&at the people, or any portion of them., must-be represented in Congress by licsntious wretches,. 919a tures whose animal nature' havegrqj*Bi in such rank ^luxurianoe.ae to smother whatever of moral feeling tiiey may, at some period of their lives, have possessed, but it is worse to kno* that these lecherous men are guilty of the inexpressibly bareness of foisting their mistresses on the public for support, stealing bread ftoiii the mouths of virtuous widows and orphan girls to feed their paramours., & man who is capable of that is so utterly and hopelessly lost to every manly thought or worthy feeling that it would seem to be a waste of breath to pray for his reformation*

We do not believe that any Congress* man from Indiana is open to a charge «f such criminal baseness.. Although these women were, most of tbei»r appointedunder Johmok's administration, W% feel eonfldent that not even a DemooraUeBepresentative from Indiana haa any cause to fear the ftil lest Investigation' this matter. But the world ought know who are the wretches that have bean engaged in tbfa bufiness, and th*| entire press of the country lh in demanding a thorough overhauling of the nauseating rottenness. There must ba a time In the near future when corrap. tion will become less rampant at the N agonal capital, or a,,disgusted and ouU ragek public sentiment will make itself felt there in a manner that will not be either agreeable or healthful for the guilty.

We warn the good and true men Congress that the people expect from them a fearless exposure of the crimes of their unworthy fellow-mepiberf. Thpy must make at-least- On¥ gtand purge the Capitol from such lecherous villainy as Would disgrace tho nfoa private citizen. If they cannot sua in this effort—if they caQjMj| abolish^ a Congressional house of ill-^n%aufported at publio expense, undarthp. pretext of furnishing honest «mploym^tto virtuous women—they majr as wall burn the publio buildings and archives, and confess that out .experiment in self-government is a wretched failure. But they can do Hi if they will'try, and t&ey may rist^ sured that the great mass of. the people will be at their backs, when they lead on in such a campaign. ~I!et"them go into action without delay* The existiaf4fct»

of affairs is° too deep and damning^ 1 shame,'too foul ^reproaoh,' to bekdftgar tolerated. Blot it out, gentlemen, or your piasters will *11:you a ing, for which yofi wUI tojwQyggfa

An impression exists ,in $pst$n that the American terminus :of the proposed Prench cable will be «9fflewhere in Massachusetts, and Ouxbury, Plymouth county, has, by common consent, been fixed upon. Tmc Virginia papers are complaining the appointment 9t Mrs. Tan Lew to 'oetmaater of Bichmond, because she was a Union spy during the rebellion.— The appointment, they say, wu intended as an insult jo the people of Bichmond and the South.
