of the courtesies of life in you' tet Commodore Vanderbilt, which I rf'a

been pained to read, you cer
tainly cannot complain should I *ddre«8 fyw Plain words to you through the same c&fcMeL
I think, Mark, yOa hftvs made a great mistake in this public arraignment of a man of the age and character of Comma-
tcoeniy the Springfield Republican, made i» similar mistake when, instead of pitching into the official acts of the manager of the Erie Sailway, and showing up the enormous iniquities of the "ring," he descended to the dirty work of writing and printing a purely personal and unwarranted attack on "Jim Fisk," and Ljrorse t»»" that, upon a defenceless wom'in—his Wife. *uJim," not a whit wiser, procured the unwarrantable artest and imprisonment of his assailant, under cir^yhich appealed at once to the sympathy of the ptlblic, thereby converting a maligner of private citizens into a reprepntatmrofjthe rights of the press and of personal liberty. Both these men wece grossly wrong, and so the public has dicid#d. And. so, I tinuk, wjll be decision of fair mindfed men and women as to your "letter to Oommodore Vanderbilt."
That "a crawling swarm of small souls" do loVe to glorify vanderbilt print iaunqueationably true, but why should he be held responsible for what these small souls do? I have no.doubt, if the truth were known, that he is quite as much an noyed even Markripr,.--tM^ coaldapare the time from the pros ecution of his groat enterprises to think about them ,or their small doings. Why not uncork your vials of invective on these vermin alone, and leave the man of
seventy millions, with his .wonderful acIGrity^ aQd his immense brain power,1 to prosecute the great interests he has in hand, thereby increasing the wealth and prosperity of the nation, and of all the men and women who oompose it. For even jfou will not deny, Mark, that 'Oogiaodori Vanderbilt has accomplished idxne* ^rand undertakings in fiis day, which not only brought money to bis purse, but has made your life and mine more pleasant, besides-shotting thus to the young men who come after him the, possibilities of human effort.
There may be hundreds of "small souls," Mark, who will read your "open letter," and give frothy praise to your flippant sentences, saying, with
joint proprietorship in your rollicking recklessness, /Mark stands by the people! Mark ain't afraid of money bags and hosts of similar foolish things, which they are to be blamed for and not you—and yet, after all, Mark, are you not quite as much to blame for the ravings of these senseless satellites, whose weak minds are captivated by the rounded sentences which you are paid to write, as is Commodore Vanderbilt for the obsequiousness of the "crawling swarm-' of sycophants who are dazed by the glare of his seventy millions No, Mark this holding of any man responsibly for what others may say of him, without his consent, is not only unfair and ungenerous but very foolish, and quite unworthy of one whose profession it is to aid in the promotion of a healthy public sentiment.
I cannot think jtneoemary, Mark, that one should bow in abject vassalage to the glitter of Commodore Vanderbilt!*^ sev enty millions to discover that he is a remarkable man, and worthy of some consideration, even if be does not recognize your right or mine to dictate to him how he shall spend the money he has honestly earned. His early history—commenclftg In life witbout- hioney or 'friends, aMg&Us with, and yktorVover difficulties which would have crushed a less brave spirit his unceasing industry and perseverance his gradual accumulation of wealth his budding and culminating financial genius his growing e&lerpriees compassing, finally, the management and virtual oifMrship of steamboat lines and railroads his wonderful prescienco in the development of schemes at which timid souls stand aghast, but which in his hands gftiw into the great and beneficent public Interests about-wlmh™the American people never tire of talking, and which the very best of us like to appropoiate as something in which we have had a hand —are these nothing to have lived for, Mark? that a useless life which is spent ia'pfojecting and prosecuting enterprises which give healthful and remunerative employment to men who are willing to work, and which tends directly to the unfolding of the wealth and power of this great natio» :iOO,'
Ah, Mark! with all your ability and reputation as a writer—and you have a fair share of both—I cannot doubt that you would deem it worthy oI your ambition to have done a quarter of the good whicli has resulted—incidentally, if you please—ftpnr this battle with the world which hsi secured to Commodore Vanderbilt his seventy millions. "As you eajVMark, the Commodore is an old man, (another reason why your open letter should not have been writton), over seventy years of age, and yet hard at work—with brain as clear, energy as restless, and spirit as unflagging as at the period which men call the prime of life. He may not have, as you heartlessly predict, more than ten years to live —possibly not half that time—and yet hp shall say, if. A* does not,- that be ictota put off this harness ancf sink'quietly into the grave? Thefact is, Mark, in
yoi We need his energy, bis sagacity, his in dustry, bfi experience—aye, and his sevinty mUliou^Ao posh on the great enterprises about which you and.I, Mark, and thousands other poor unproductive souls.

If vou should give a street beggar a hundred dollars you would do a very foolish thing if you should furnish bm empkiyment, at fair wages, chMitable act, though you made money also from bis labor.
Vanderbilt's mWionB are invested in railroads, furnishing laboy—«id money to pay for it-to thousands of men direcU lv employed thereon, anct VbO^sa.nds of others, thropeh.the various industries which are qaickened into healthful life and. activity by the grwV-fleriss of travel and traniportion thus kept open.

He may possibly pradtice some rare feaU of legerdemain, which it would not be wise to commend to the admnation of ardent and susceptible youths yet if, throug lack of vigilance, be should suffer his great interests to go by default or to be rasp ended, more misery and ruin would follow than you or I could alleviate^ Maik, with all our fine talk about the foolish hoarding of money.

It may may bo well for you, Mark, and the thoughtless claquers who will echo your witticisms, to think seriously upon this matter and not run away with the idea that the great question upon which you have unsuspectingly stumbled can be disposed of by a personal assault upon a single individual. 1trust, Mark, you will not feel aggrieved at these few plain, unconsidered words. They have been forced to the surface by your very Bevere and graceless strictures, not upon a man with seventy millions, but upon all men who dare to do with their Own honest earnings as they, and noc you, may deem best. Tou have done much better with your pen Mark, than in this open letter, and I sincerely and confidently trust you will never do worse. Even to this day these Bitters are popular as ever, and their sale and use on these islands is constantly increasing, and there can hardly a family be found, rich or poor, who is without them.
