COUXDT OT EBBOBS.' told of a^^ lady" who wu anxious to make her husband a birthday present Having selected a Persian pattern for a dressing gown, she ordered it made very long, thinking it an euy matter to cut it off to suit the eighth of her liege lord. It wu duly presented to him upon his arrival home one evening, but to the mortifl" cation of the wife, proved to be fully ton inches too long. The wife remarked to her husband, who seemed delighted at the present, "never mind, I can euily -shorten it to suit you."
After the husband had fallen asleep |^at night, the wife slipped out of bed and cutting off about ten inches to make it suit his stature, retired to bed again. la the morning she was up early to make some arrangements with her housekeepier, a| syaral thmhU new* expected to diWi^ If1#! An hour after the gentleman awoke, and wu anxious to surprise his affectionate wife. He sent the dressing-gown to a tailor near by, to have it made shorter by ten inches. The good wife wu detained longer than she expected, and scarcely had the dressing-gown returned from the tailor's when she came into the room. Her husbaqd had |uet risen and proposed now to aurp'^fse bfts Wife and enjey his comfort. But how surprised was his better-half to see her husband in a fine Persian pattern shobting jacket instead of a comfortable dressing-gown.
Building Association.—An effort has recently been made in this city to organize a bujldjng -association, for ,_the benefit of me^ni|sfcn4^Q^-.jpf^imileA c|ean|. Taus'far, tho effort, like'all other3 new movements, has not met with the most promising success, but it is to be hoped the experiment may be tfied, and put in{ operation this season. These associag^ns exist in St. Louis and other western cities, and have bean found to: work well. Becently an organization has been perfected ia Richmpnd,. this[ State. From the 'telegram of't that city, we learn the plan adopted is this:— Each member pays twenty-five cents per week for each share tir- which hejsubsoribes the number of shares are five hundred at $200 each, making a capital
It is said that the JRewrend JEmsley Hamilton, now a member of the Legislature from Vigo, is an applicant for the plaoe of wMsjhr inspector at Terre Haute., f$ie0,000, which is the limit, we ~-L*Fayett* Journal. telieve. for such associations in this State.
Very well, what of it Is there any branch of the public service in which a religious man may not properly serve his country May not a thorough-going temperance man be abetter servant of the Government in seeing that whisky is not smuggled, than another man who regards whisky as the natural beverage of humanity, and water only useful for the purposes of navigation
believe, for such associations In a month's time $500 will have accumulated. This is put up for bids, and the member who bids the highest for the privilege of the loan borrow it from the Association, giving bis note for the Amount less the premium, at six per cent, interest, secured by mortgage on real estate. For instance a member who has Subscribed for three shares bids a premN pm of six per cent, on a^loan of $600.— He gives note for $564 at six per cent, inteMftK^andrsSHsaattewbh shares of"Stock to the Association.
