If we seek for loyalty, we have a man twice as loyal as the mass of Andrew Johnson's appointees. we learn with regret of the death of Gen. Sol. Mkbkdith, which occurred at his residence, in Cambridge City, last Friday morning. Gen. Mkrkdith native of North Carolina, but in early life removed to Indiana, where he took an aotive part in public affairs. He was instrumental in the organization of 'our State Agricultural Society. On the breaking out of the war he was appointed to the command of the 19th Regiment In diana Volunteers, and on the 6th of Octo ber, 1862, was promoted to the rank of a Brigadier-General. He served with distinction during the continuance of the rebellion, and at its close ran for Congress against Hon. Gxo.
defeated by the old war-horse of the Republican party. He afterward was apponted to a Government position in West, but returned to his home in health) and died as above stated.
Gnk of the efieots of the disgraceful bolt of the Democratic members of itlie Legislature, was to leave the Indiana Soldiers' Home without any funds for the aupport of the disabled 'soldieis in that institution. The Odd Fellows of the State have made a noble effort to counteract the evils intended to result to the inmates of the Home, by raising and sending to the proper authorities, a donation in money. The correspondence on the subject between Dr. Babby, the Secretary of the Order, and Mr .Hannamann, representing the Home, is printed in to-day's paper.

A PACIFIC RAILROAD TOWN. -----
Curious Scene at Bryan, Eight Hundred Miles West of Omaha. -----

nal
It was late in the evening when we entered the new town of Bryan, then about two weeks old. We rode up a wide street, bright with lights flaming in the windows of the restaurants and saloons, each shopman and parkeeper [sic] by arrangement of kerosene lamps and colored glasses to outshine his neighbor in his endeavors to attract a crowd.

nal> the following account of the present terminus of the Union Pacific Railway— the town of Bryan, eight hunched miles west of Omaha:
The United States at the present time can exhibit one thing not to be found in any other country—a Pacific Railroad town. By that we do not mean a town like Omaha, which is an old established city, but one of the mushroom place, which grow up in a night, last a week or two, and then are torn down and moved to another locality: The railroad is pushed forward so fast and the terminus changed so often, that a town only gets under way before it is pulled down and sent forward to a new place. You can find houses at the present terminus, Bryan, eight hundred miles west'pf Omaha, which have been put up and taken down fifteen times. The people who live in them are American Arabs. They are not only nomads, ever on the move, but they can steal and plunder as adroitly and with as little compunction of conscience as their brethern, the Bedouins. Civilization and Christianity has not refined or softened their inhuman nature.
Let me not be understood to say that every man in one of these railroad towns is a villian [sic] or a blackleg; on the contrary, honest men are to be found who, after bearing patiently with ruffians til patience ceases to be a virture, and there being no law or order, or organized, society, take matters into their own hands and become a terror to evil-doers. When some flagrant crime has been committed—murder or assassination—these law-abiding men purify the place by hanging the murderers to the nearest tree; or if no tree is near, they extemporize a gallows by tilting up the tongue of a wagon, and sending the ruffian into eternity before the body of his victim is cold. Such sudden punishment is like lightning on a sultry day—purifying and invigorating,
