POBTEBS are up announcing Hon. D. W. Voorheea to speak at the Court House to-night on "Negro suffrage."

DIED.—At Montrose, yesterday, March 12th, at 10} A. »r., IDA MAY, daughter of Joshua E. and Elizabeth Glover, in tho 9th year of her age.
The funeral will occur at three o'clock r. M. to-day, from the residence of the parents, at Montrose. Friends 'of the family are invited to attend without further notice.
COBHECTION.—Our information in re gard to where Mr. Preston Sparks, drowned in Honey Creek, Wednesday night, obtained his liquor, was incorrect He did not Btop at the Pike's Peak saloon but at a saloon on the opposite side the street, and was somewhat in liquor when he arrived there.
CITY EDITOB EXPRESS:—Don't be in Buch a hurry with your "good-bye.' haven't "left Sixth streot" and don't intend to do so in such woather as this. Call 'round and s§e me, young .men, when you ox-orciso your velocipede. "OLD HOUSE,".

OUB POSTMASTER I—By a private dispatch from Washington we learn that Linus A. Burnett, Esq., has been appoint ed Postmaster for this city. We presume this will "interfere" with the projected election of A Postmaster. Mr. Burnett loft for New York last night, and- we suppose will be home in a few days.
It having been reported that Mr. Bur nett exerted himself to procure the Post office for his son-in-law, Mr. Meaeham we are requosted by Mr. Meacham to say that he is regularly employed by Mr, Burnett in other business, that ho is to continue at his employment, and is to have nothiDg whatever to do with the PoHoffice in any shape or way.
A VETO.—Governor Baker £as vetoed the House bill No. 60, entitled "an Act for the incorporation, and continuance of Insurance Companies authorizing them to reissue their risks exempting certain policies of Life Insurance from attachment by creditors making all policies non-forfeitable after two full annual payments repealing fill laws and parts of laws inconsistent therewith, and declar ing an emergency." He closes his objec tions with the following language: "I think the bill is so manifestly an act of hasty and ill-considered legislation that it ought riot to go upon the statute book until eRch house shall have had ai^'op* portunity to reconsider it." This leaves the insurance laws of the State unchanged.
TOBACCO is A GLORIOUS TBINQ!—In fcig new book on the use of tobacco, Dr. Griscom lays great stress on its directly poisonous effects and his ugly cataloguo of the consrtjucoces of excess in its uso includes nervous, disturbances, palpitatioa.of the heart, blindness, dyspepsia, jaundice, icflammalion uf the liver, dysentery cancer, destruction of the teeth, paralysis, headache, imbecility, idiocy, insanity and death. He insists further that the-cimmon notion that tobacco prevents malaria, and aids diction is wholly unfounded. We believe the thirteenth disease of the Doctor's 'ugly catalogue" is the commonest one of the tobacco user's punishments and the worst one of Ihe list, for when he has got that he carte nothing for tho fool.ings and dislikes of other people,

It is probable that these comp have acted wisely and for their own best -interests in rejecting all looal aid,,And thereby relieving themselves from even a seeming obligation to the people through whose country the road runs. Bat, whether wisely or unwisely, Jiaving once determined, we have no question they will immediately build the1 rjad to.cult themselves. They neither need nor de sire local aid or local sympathy. The people wili be forced to go to them for favors bad not they to the people.
We congratulate our friends below on their -success. Because thay have had tbe good luck to get a railroad Without paying anything for it, is no raason why we'sbould not be friends. vTiieir property and our property is in the same county, to be taxed for the same purpose of munioipal government, and, perhaps in the end it will make but little difference to the county revenue, whether the railroad, whose property is to be taxed in the county, shall lie in the middle or at one side of the county.
And, while the effect of this decision could not be otherwise than regretted by very many of our best citizens, the bold noss and independence of a monied cor poration that invests hundreds of thou sands of dollars in our midst without BO much as saying, "by your-Jeave.?'' ebal lenge. our admiration, and enlists louri sympathy." As we could not get the road ourselves, we are glad, that our county people have got it, and that too, ifithout being compelled to donate mon ey, right of way or anything else.
THE VELOCIPEDE QUESTION promises with the advent of pleasant.weather t&i: be a subject of lively discussion. Already there are many timid souls whor unable to ride tbe elegant, quick-moving bicycle declare it must be pushed from the side* walks. They cannot comprehend the fact that the bicycle occupies on the side walk laterally only about the width of the rider's shoulders, which amount of elbow room" we all consider, and believe ourselves entitled to, whether we be ve locifyedestrians or pedestrians. This same subject is agitating the good people of In dianapolis, and several articles, pro and con, have appeared.in tbb daily papers In yesterday's
Journal,
'writer thoroughly disgusted with the combined ignorance and obstinacy diS' played by the writers o£ some of tbeso ar tides oppposing the general use of the velocipede, gives a few words in explana tion of its workings, for the benefit of those Who have not had the opportunity of thoroughly testing its merits, and his remarks, are applicable to this locality He says:
As it is quite obvious that the writers referred to are not "velocipedists," it equally obvious they are not aware of this' very important fact, viz:

From the best information we nave been able to gather, our long delayed and vary troublesome question of whether the St. Louis, Vabdaiia and Terre-Haate Railroad shall run by Marshall or Darwin, has at last been settled in favor of Darwin. It is reported that work will commence immediately, and tiie roli be completed from Terre Haute to Darwin in ninety days. We in common with all our citizens, deeply deplore this resaU.— But we could not build the road ourselves and the wealth of tho companies that have undertaken to build it is sucli that all of our efforts in giving right of'way, making local subscriptions etc, it se&bs^ were too puerile and insignificant to be taken into consideration in determining the merits of the lines. 't
of that city,
A bicycle can
"turn out" and pass a person on foot quite as easy as one foot passenger passes another, provided said "walkist" be not one of those weak-kneed individuals who go bobbing about in front of one for several seconds, unable to decide on which side to pass instead of adhering to the Uni veraal rule- "pass on the right"—always
Or if the small portion of our popula lion who are afraid of being "run down1 and "crushed into an unrecognizable mass," would only adopt tho old and very simple rule—"follow your nose'V-*|he much dreaded accidents would never hap pen. True, no accidents of the kind have occurred as yet, but then something might happen, you know.
Then, again, our woeful fritods do not grasp with their far-raaching and tenacious understandings, the fact that, in case they should come face to face" with one of "the things,,r the thing can even when going at a high rate of speed, be easily and instaptly stopped, and in more ways than ono.
It is proposed to deny them the'sidewalksl Shades of our departed and lib erty-luving ancestors, where are ye Prepare then, ye proud progenitors of the rising generation, prepare, I say, 'to toot off your baby carriages into the middleol our sometimes dusty, sometimes muddy streets. Prepare then, O, ye go-carters, and yo also, O ye wheel* barrowites, pre pare ye
all
to bereafter gambol with
your vehicular arrangements, in the muddy or dusty streets, and do not presume to enjoy our broad, smooth and thinly populated sidewalks. And aU for this sapient reason—you may overturn, frighten or otherwise demoralize, some great, healthy six-footer I You may with your velocipede, go-c^rjL,, wheelbarrow or baby carriage demolish one or another of our prominent citizens Have some pity, I pray you, for weak nerves.
But now, earnestly, all that is asked is a calm and serious consideration of the following
facts:
1. The bicycle is a mean of speedy transportation from one point to another, and, perhaps, distant one, making, with quiet, ease and
safety,
a mile in, say,
seven minutes—an important consideration. 2. Tho bicyclo occupies, laterally, no more than tho portion of the sidewalk equgl to the breadth ol the rider's shoulders. 3. It can be "turned cut" or around «r person coming from the opposite direction, as easily, quickly, and as
harmlessly,
as one person usually passes another. 4. In case of coming directly in iront of a person walking, it can, oven when in rapid motion, be as easily and quickly stopped as noed be, by simply placing the feet upon the ground or reversing the motion. 5. It is, a? any one who ever attempted the riding of one, a means of powerful and healthy exercise in the open air.
C. It costs to keep it only the interest of tbe money, eats no C3rn, hay, or oats, tcquires no stabling, nor runs away, (UQ. less some vagabond kindly assists It), and is always ready.
In short, we want our obstw&te dyspep-
