in favor of the annexation of Nova flootia and of the Canadian Provinces to the United States. A strong deputation of Nova Scotians who were in Washington last week, and who speak for their g?i saynhat an overwhelming majori:o ity of the people boldly prefer being ]L- added to the United States since they were corruptjy and against their will and in the face of their protest, sealed to (be new Canadian "Dominion." They declare that connection hateful to them, and, aa it seems to be the policy of Eng land not to interpose against any. free movement of the colonies to set up for themselves, they do not anticipate any resistanceahould they vote for annexation t« the United States. sustain this movement in a powerful argument. He iB quoted as saying that Congress should vote down the proposed reciprocity treaty with Canada that, free-trader a9 he is, he postpones his favorife theory before the necessi ty of refusing free trade to tbc dependency of a nation that was so steadily our •nemy during the rebellion. If Canada wanta free trade she must join the American Union. This is anew and startling view of an old subject, and becomes an important ingredient in the adjustment of the Alabama claims. Befuse free trade to the Canadas and they will be compelled to cut loose from the home government. They cannot exist with their products taxed under our tariffs and so it may happen that long before England agrees to settle our "little bill" for protecting the rebellion and driving our commerce from the seas, at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars to our merchants, Canada may be in a blaze with the annexation fever.

Fight Between Leopards.
The Liverpool Courier describes a terrible fight between two of the largest leopards in Manders's Menagerie, It is usual before feeding to place large movable slides to separate the animals while feeding. While preparing to do this the keeper had difficulty in keeping the two large leopards from engaging in a combat, and *o sooner had hp turned his back to bring up the slide than there was a howl and the two had commenced to fight. The sight was fearful. Both boldly confronted each otberj crouching down, lashing their sides with their tails, and, making a spring, they fell heavily, locked ineaeh other's -embrace. The struggle that followed was long and fierce. The eyes of the leopards flashed with fury as they struggled on the floor Mr. Manders used every endeavor lo separate the infuriated combatants, but all with no avail. He then procured a longAcraper and dealt each a blow, which had the effect of separating them only to renew the fight with greater fierceness. Making a second spring they both fell with a fearful crash on the floor the larger one seized the other by the shoulder, breaking the fore foot the other laid hold of the fleshy part of the back. The struggle was still great, and the animals rolled together over and over. Mr. M. by this time had the slide brought, and dealing one a blow with a large pj^ce of iron, and causing it to release its hold and slouch to the other side, the slide was placed in pohition. One was left prostrated on the floor and badly hurt, the blood flowing freely, and the fore leg broken in several places, and beyond recovery. Mr. Manders then procured some prussio acid and poisoned it. This leopard had received a compound free ture of the near fore leg and the scapula in fact, all the bones were smashed, the largest piece being only two inches, and the flesh torn into ribbons, a^one the claws was torn off.
Extraordinary Trial.
An extraordinary trial for murder and arson has just been toncluded at NanCy, France. The accused, a young man of nineteen, named Jeanson, fti a £upilat the school for young men~ intended for the priesthood, kept at Pont-a-Mousson He appears, however, to have been little qualified for a religious life. In May last be was detected introducing a copy of Aristophanes Into the establishment and, fearing expulsion, determined to mark his departure by a signal act of ven geance. Getting np at night, he collect ed a heap of books in the schoolroom and set fire to them, and while the pile was burning he broke open the desks of the other pupils to take whatever money or valuables they contained, and then wrote on the wall such inscriptions as "Down with the Priests!" "How sweet is ven geance!" "I am beginning what others will complete!" Jeanson appears to have been much attached to another youth named Jouatte, and on reflecting that after the unpardonable act he had just committed he could not escape expulsion he resolved to murder his friend -Mther than be separated from him. He accord ingly went back to the dormitory, and there in cold blood out the throat of the other lad. The defense put forward was insanity, although no acta of the previous life of the accused were of a nature to justify the supposition, although the evidence, showed that his conversations with his school-fellows were often blasphemous and revolting. He was condemned to twenty yearss' hard labor,
