OLD WINXEB still lingers in the lap of Spring—the naughty old fellow. This expression is not now it has been repeated year after year so far air our memory reaches, but it is applicable to every season.
GLAD' are we to hear that early in April, the X. & 0. Bailroad Company will put another passenger train on their road, leaving here in the morning. This is much desired and will prove a great convenience.
BUSINESS CHANGS.—The firm of Allen, Brown & Co. has been, dissolved, Col. Hudson and C. W. Brown, Esq, retiring. The establishment is how in the hands of Messrs E. B. Allen -and A. S.Andrews, the latter a brother-in-law of S.S. Early, Esq. 14 Jlf

Some eight weeks
since Mr.,."$VVH. Power, of the firm of Power & White of Sullivan, was taken •iok, ifcd diiring a series of convulsions was totrfly deprived of his sjght, and remained so until last Friday evening when his aigkt returned almost as suddenly as h« ba^'b^ea^eprLved of it.' This caused great rejoloing with bis family and friends.
KjBLllY & LION'S MINSTRELS, wall known to almost every visitor to New York in the last* three years, appear at Dowling Hall to nignt, and from their extensive reputation one of tne best minstrel performances that has been given in this oity for some time, if indeed it has ever been surpassed. Besides the usual medley of Ethiopian minstrelsy, will be given Leon's operatta of "La Grand Dutch-S,"and Leon's burlesque "BarberBlUj" \Tb9 admission to all part^of the Hall is only fifty cents.

C. O. GENUNG, Chief Engineer of the E. & C. Bailroad, arrived in the city last evening. He is engaged this week in his semiannual inspection of the road. Twice in each year with a competent force, every bridge structure and trestle work is carefully inspected, and evory piece of timber not esteemed perfectly safe for the following six months, imme diately removed. This, we think, is one reason of the 'safety with which their irains are run. Did some other roads in 4ur Apiihtry use the like precautions, we should hear of fewer trains going through jroUen bridges.

THE" E. & C. R. R.—The
.corps of Engineers who hnve.boon em pJtajed- in running preliminary lines through Parke and Termillion counties, .with a view to the extension of the E. & 0. Railroad towards Chicago, have re turned to Terre Haute, and report having found several favorable routes ia tbo di rectlon of DaaVillc, Illinois. Tbey are nSw engaged in fnaking up estimates on the lines ftn. We hope soon to hear of the line being located and put under contract. It will give a new stimulus to business in this city to have a direct connection with Chicago.
DBOWKKD.—Yesterday morning, the body of Preston Sparks, an old.and well known citixen of Honey Creek township, was found drowned in Honey Creek, near tho crossing on the road leading south from this city, fife was in town the eveningfprevious, and in going home stopped st the Pike's Peak saloon on the southern outskirts of the city, wlmo be filled himself With liquid damnation, and in an in ebtiSfaNSondUion was thmblod Into his wagon and started in the direction of home. The horses were seen going on a full gallop, and on reaching tho creek, Which *fras swollen from the recent rains, they plunged in. tho wagon-bed parted jfrotn the wheels, and with tho unconscious or helpless man floated down against some drift wood, where it was found yesterday morning. Mr. Sparks was about fifty years of age and leaves a wife and family igrown up children^

MACHINE BBICK.—We have heretofore.
a1'.Iced
the enterprize of Messrs. Miles &
Hedden in the manufactures of machine brick in out city. -^h«r eatabltahmairfc. is situated on south First street, and is. very eomplete in all its arrangement*. A powerful steam engine furnishes the requisite power to drag up the clay from the pits in the river bottoms and propel the machinery to temper the clay and mould the b*iok. They have all the neooessary conveniences for manufacturing of from 25,000 to 30,000 bricks per day, and for kiln-drying from 60,000 to 70,000 at one' time, so that the process .of making does not stop, with them, frf rainy weather. The machine used for. the manufacture of ordinary brick is fcnown as "Sword's patent." They nave also one of the "Philadelpma" hand presses for manufacture of an elegant article of pressed brick for fronts. The establishment has been extensively run during the past two seasons, giving employment to twenty-five or thirty hands Among the public buildings, in our city, constructed of their brick are the Normal School, the deppt of the Evansville Railroad and the Universaliet church,. A large'nuifiber have also been used by citizens. There have been many attempts to mikp perfect brfcks rapidly by machln ery, which have not proven successful.—
Messtf. Miles & Hedden, hpwfiver.aeem tp accomplish this desirable end. In fact, they claim that the article manufactured by them superior to the ordinary hand made brick in the following essentials 1. That they are heavier, weighing as 6 to poupds as compared to ordinary brick, and more compact, -2. That they are less porous and there fore absorb less water or moisture that the machine brick from the kiln will not absorb more than two or three ounces of watei-, while the ordinary hand made one will absorb from 12 to 14 ounces. 3. That they are much stronger, and will require
forty per cent,
more weight
to' crush them. Experiments made by Mr. Peddle, Superintendent of the Terre Haule & Indianapolis Railroad, in the machine shops in this city, on the 19th of February last, gave the following results: Hand-made soft bricks were crushed by a pressure of four and seven tons, machine 80ft bricks by ten tons. Handmade red bricks crushed at 10 and 10$ tonp, machine-made red bricks at 14 tons, The hard bricks of the machine resisted 16 tons. 4., That they are much smoother aod mora nearly square and less liable to give at tne corners. That the clay being tempered by steam is better tempered and makes a brick less liable to-crack. 5. That the machine brick Sot being finished with sand, cement better in the walj. 6:' That they are cheaper, in the long run', because there i& no waste about them and they are larger, stronger and more durable than the hand brick.
The above are some of the advantages claimed by Messrs. Miles & Hedden, for their brick. They expect to manufacture heavily this year, and can turn out from five to six millions during the present season, if demanded." Those who contemplate building should examine their bricks and test the truth of what is claimed on their behalf. Our citiaens are all interested in encouraging and sustaining, our manufacturers of all kinds, and we hope that Messrs. Miles & Hedden will find their enterprise successfully rewarded.
