Horrible Murder by a Young Col ored Woman in Washington case of Jealousy. From the Washington Chronicle, 6.1
One bf the most shocking affairs which
it has beeq our province to note for some
months past occurred yesterday in the
boardinn house kept by Mrs. Yon Bogkerck, on First street East, between
and streets North.
A young colored woman named Millie
Gaines, empioyed as a servant in the house, entered the room of a young man named James Ingle ab6ut ten o'clock, and deliberately sUuok him over tbe head two or three times with a large hammer, indicting feerful gashes. Immediately afterward the girl surrendered herself at the Central Police Station, say' ing to Lieutenant Kelly "I've killed man." The lieutenant did not believe her at first, bot had her placed in a cell, telegraphed to Police Headquarters, and ascertained that a man'had been mur dered, and that Detectives Clarvoe and Bigley were in Bearch of the murderer
The colored woman's Btory was to the effect that she had been in tbe employ of Mrs. Von Boskerck since October last where she became acquainted with James Ingle, who seduced and ruined her. Ingle had promised to care for her but when she made application to him for pecuniary aid it was refused ber, and on one or two occasions, she avers, ho threatened to take her life if she troubled him longer. Maddened by his acts, and by rumors that bo was on intimate 4erms with other females, she threatened to make a complete expose of the whole matter and finally did communicate the faota to several of Ingle's femalo friends. About ten o'clock yesterday morning she entered Ingle's roera, armed with a pis to), and threatened to shoot him. He dared her to fire, whereupon she pulled the trigger, but the cap snapped. Bent upon the accomplishment ot her deadly purpose, she grasped a common hammer in the room and struck him a fearful blow on the back of the head, repealed the blows two or thee times and then left the apartment, leaving her victim with the blood streaming from the gaping wounds. She immediately left, the house and proceeded to the Central Police Station, where she surrendered herself to the authorities, as previously Stated.
Upon the conclusion of the examination tbe magistrate decided to commit her to jail. When informed of the fact, she replied that she was satisfied that it she had not killed Ingle he would hrave killed her. In reply to questions of Lieut. Kelly, she said that Ingle had on one or two occasions threatened hor lifo with a pistol, and also said that on the morning of the murder, while the deceased was at breakfast, she had pointed a pistol at him, but was prevented from discharging the weapon by a colored woman who was 'near by.

WITH WILD
Exploit of^onas Brooks Wildcat Killer ofEden^..
From tbe Middletown (N. Y.)Mai!.l Over in Sullivan oounty, along the Nev
ersink, is a little settlement known as
Eden—so named, probably, as a kind of compensation for being as unlike the primitive Eden as one could readily im agine. One of the celebritieB of the neigh bprhood is Jonas Brooks—a thoroughgoing back-woodsman, a terror to all sorts of wild "varmint" that prowl abou that part of the country, and particular ly tp wild cats, which are his especial aversion. The number of wildcats which he has killed is immense—so many that hie is known everywhere about that reg ion by the sobriquet ot "Jonas Brooks, the "Wild-cat Killer of Eden." His various exploits and adventures in that line, if properly written up, would make a book of thrilling interest—a worthy companion to "Tom Quick, the Indian Slayer."
Some few weeks ago Jonas espied one of these hated felines, while going through a piece of woods, and, true to his instinct, he made after the animal without stopping to consider that he was unarmed—not even having a jack-knife about him. He followed it uutil it re treated to a sort of cavern in the rocks, where Jonas made up his mind to "go in" and capture the "varmint." So, picking up a tough hickory club, he proceeded to eiiter the cave. After passing the entrance, to his surprise be found quite a lofty cavorn, extending back some thir ty feet, and in the iurthest extremity glowed.not only one, but half dozen pairs of ferocious eyes, which betokened warm work for any intruder. Jonas was undoubtedly "somethin1 took bick," as he expressed it, at the sight of so many glis tening eyes fixed upon him, but as it was not in his nature to retreat under any circumstances, he cautiously advanced in to the cave.
He soon discovered that he had walked into a real litter of wildcats—two old ones and four young ones—and about the time ko bad got through counting them the, biggest one of the six "went for him." Throwing himself back in an angle of tbe cavern, tbe herculean backwoodsman met tho ferocious monester with a well swung blow of his cndgel, which rather "willed* the animal for a moment but before Jonas bad time fairly to recover himself from thq first onslaught, the other old cat made a dive at him, catching on his right arm and shoulder and ren dering him almost powerless, so terrible was the grip of the monster's claws. With his left hand however, Jonas graepod tbe throat of the animal, and, after a desperate struggle, succeeded in shaking off. Jonas now thought that dts crelion in such a case
might
be the "bet
ter part of valor," and accordingly began to consider the chances of retreat. He re volved all the chances in his mind "in about tbe millionth part of a second,'' be said, and came to the conclusion that it wouldn't do for him to leave the little angle iu which he was so well posted.
Both of tbe old wildcats, meanwhilo, were lashed into a state of the most intense ferocity their eyes, glaring like caals ot fire, and their hair literally standing on end. And, to add to Jonas's discomfiture, the four young ones— which, although only "kittens," were not exactly of the kind which a lady would like to bold in her lap—began to exhibit symptom ot joining in the tight, "just to get their hands in," as Jonas naively told our informant. This was a situation. Jonas began to think this would be his last fight with wildcats, and that the wildcats won id probably have tbe extreme felicity of eating Jonas Brooks for their supper. All these thoughts of course pass through Jonas's mind, while the animah were for a moment kept at bay by the lively motions of his hickory cudgel. Only for a moment, however, as his first antagonist again took the lead in an attack, and although she met with a sharp blow of the cudgei, the whole litter followed in such quick succession that Jonas was unable to keop them off. And now cnaued a truggle which it is useless to attempt tu portray.
Tbe ferocious animals clawed into Joaas in eveiy quarter, while be male a'most superhuman efforis to tear them off knocking about right and left with his club, as well, as bo was able, and clutching, them, toy tbe throats with his left band when he got a chance. Luckily Jonas was arrayed in a good suit of homespun, instead of 'Sihoddy," -or he would lmvejeen stripped to the skin in no time. The fight was a fierce and livoly one for a time, as can be readily imagined. Jonas was fighting for his lite, however, and soon succeeded in putting the young cats hor a du combat, by cracking them judiciously over the heads itis blows on tbe the old ones also began to tell, and, after a last desperate struggle,
inirbloh one of them got a finishing blew tb aoUwrmtr sated to the back..o£, the oave, wjiere Jonas proceeded to do for JunLalso, leaving him master of toe sitmitten7r"~An" inventory of our tero** wardrobe, taken after the flght, exhibited one suspender, about half a vest, one lee of a pantaloon, no shirt to speak Of, ana a pair of boots that heavy dew," as Jonac* whole body and limbs
an
pcesaad iCAflia were frightfully
lacerated, and tbe blood fairiy ran from his wounds. Notwithstanding whicb, Jonas tied the tails of the six wildcats together, and swinging them around his neck, be walked home with fail trophies.
LYNCH LAW IN BUT LEU, MO,
Two luppeaed pone Tbleres Hang.
A correspondent in Butler, Bates coon'
ty, Mo, gives tbe following account of a
hanging affair near that oity last week.:
Butler and vicinity have been thrown again into a fever pf excitement. The cause is substantially as follows: A young man, named Simmons, approached a Mr. Lindsay and asked him. why be had reported that he had stolen a span of horses that were missing some two weeka sinee, and telling Lindsey that, if be did circulate such a report be would "clip bis wing.'
Lindsey replied that be did, and draw' ing his revolver, said: "I am ready to back it up."
Simmons then left, and was afterwards arrested by the proper authorities at the instigation of Lindsey. Last Monday the trial before the justice of the peace took
Eail
lace, which resulted in Simmons giving to the amount of $500. Simmons and an older brother then repaired to a house owned by a man named Davis.
Davis1 house was visited-the next mors* ing, about 1 o'clock, by a pome of men in total disguise, who demanded the presence of the two Simmonses. After some delay, the twain appeared, when the men forcibly seized tbem and took tbem to a tree not over a'quarter of a mile from the house, and there suspended the two brothers between the heavens and tbe earth.
Two of Davis' daughters, Buspccting foul play, mounted a horse and hastened to their brother and stated what had happened. He aC once started in pursuit of the posse. After wandering a short Ume in the adjacent woods, he gave up the chase and hurried to Butler, a distance of .four miles, and notified tho Sheriff, who started in company with some of the citizens to find tbe SimmonsesA short search had been prosecuted when the brothers were found as before described, life being extinct.
As to the lynchers, it is a matter of conjecture. It is supposed by some that their accomplices did the job to prevent States evidence, and by ptbers that the hanging was tbe work of a Vigilance Committee.

MB. DANALDSON well understands the mode of adjusting and collecting any claims growing out of tbe recent Bebellion, and for 1867 and 1868, has collccted and paid over to the claimants mor^, than Two Hundred Thousand Dollars ha* obtai ed three hundred Pension Oertiflcates, for wounded or injured soldiers, widows, mothers, and minor children, and seven hundred bounty checks for dlsrharged privates.
Pensions, if now applied for and granted, will coamenie at the date of the soldier's discharge. No time shonld be lost, as this favorable provision terminates totally about June 1870, or at five years after the discharge. .Arrears of pension miy now ba bad in all cases where the pension doe* not commence at tbe date of discharge, or devth of the soldier. Look at your certificates and call on me.
Bonnty claims under the recent law, act of July '23tb, 1E66, are now nearly all paid. Anew, law for the next and last bonnty, may, perhaps, be parsed tlifs winter. If so, applications may be made the coming Spring or Summer. I will give notice when such law is passed. No pensions have yet been allowed for service in the war of *1812,
Mo Land Warrants need be expected for service in the late war, and no further bounty to a veteran, who has had three or four hundred dollars.
I have never lost a good claim where the psrty permitted mo to manage it in my own way. I have lost two valid claims on account of such interferes cs. 49BT Refer to Merchant?, Banters ao Ottlcens generally, and to any one of the thousand whose claims have been obtained by me.
