PLEASANT STOBY is ^told, that, on the night after the inauguration of Geqi Grant and Johnson'^ vacation #f the White House, a mysterious ringing and knocking was heard at the door of the Presidential mansion. The Murderer Arrested.
Fcom tbipt. Umla Jtepobtloan.] I The readers of the
Republican
have not
forgotten the fiendish murder lately perpe trated at Pleasant Bidge, Madison county, byaGerman laborer, in which a little boy ^ght y^s ofage was the victim. The poor child, it will be remembered, was tied -iandlSndfoot, placed in a corn-crib, and then smothered or crushed to death by piling on him several sacks of wheat.-*' The wretch who committed the horrible deed robbed the house of Mr. Weiss of gome fifty dollars in money,' and then made his escape. Notwithstanding a reward Was offered and a vigorous search prosecuted in all directions, no traca of
Big whereabouts was obtained until Sat. urday last, when Constable Fred. Fulbracbt, of Godfrey, found a stranger in his precinct who so nearly answerd ^the desdrfption that be at once arrested him.— The constable took his prisoner to Jhe railroad depot, and having some official business elsewhere left him for a while in charge of the station agent and smth tender. During his absence the tram came in, which required the attention of these persons and the murderer improved the opportunity and disappeard altogether. Fulbracht was of course deeply chagrined at this termination of bis labors, but by no means discouraged. He went to work with a will finally got on the track of bis man, and Monday afternoon caught bim in the woods near what is krfbwn as Hop Hoi low, about two miles above Alton. He was brought in to the city, and sent to Edwardsville the same evening, under JguawE {^Pke prisoner's name is Christian pe,js of medium sizer »an of mild and inoffensive appearance. It is said that he has confessed the crime, but if this is true none of the particulars have been made public. It is known, however, thatfor two weeks past, and, indeed, until few days ^previous to his {irrest, he has been a guest of the Empire, a German Ibfcarding heuse on Third street. While there an account of the murder, a description of himself, and the reward for his ji$prehjn»i60i were read in his hearing but he manifested not the slightest emon tion, and no one suspicioned his indentity.
His'jjrincipftl employment while at the "Empire" was throwing dice for beer, and this cheap gambling seemed to be pei/eet passion with him.
The excitement among the Germans around Edwardsville is very great, and ^ad tbey known the prisoner was coming 4Vtir,'the strong probability is thai tbey would have raisdd a vigilance committee, overpowered the officers, and hung him on tiie spot. Fortunately matters wore conducted so quietly that no information leaked out, and we presume be is now safely in jail Jto await, an impartial trial before Chii^Oirouit pourt in Maiy next.

Ma. Duuuius well understands the mode of1 adjusting and collecting any claims grow lug out of tbe reoent Bebellion, and for 1867 and 1868, has collected and paid over to the claimants more than Two Hundred Thousand Dollars has obtal ed three handted Pension Certificates, for wounded or Injured soldiers, widows, .mothers, and minor children, and sevon hundred bounty checks for discharged privates..
Ponsions, if now applied for and granted, will commence at the date of the soldier's discharge. No time should be lost, as tbis favorable provision termlnates'totally about Juoe 1870, or at five years after the- discharge.
Arrears of pension may now b« bad in all cases where the'pension does not commence at the. date of discharge, or death of the soldier.' Look at your oertlficates and call on me.
Bonnty claims under the recent law, act of July 28th, 1866, are ndw nSarly all paid. Anew law for the next and last bounty, may, perhaps, be passed this winter. If so, applications may be made the coming Spring or Summer. I will give notice when such law is passed. No pensions have yet been allowed for ttrvice in the war of 1812.
No Land Warrants need be expected for service in the late war, and no further bonnty to 31 veteran, who hashed three or four hundred dollars. 1 bare never lost a good claim where the p»rt.v I permitted me te manage it in my. own way. L'f have loet two valid claims on account of such interferencs.
