A LOT of section men, employed by the Peru Railroad Company, got into a drunken fight last Sunday at a house near Tertland. During the fight, a man named Michael Frances cut one of bis comrades, whose name we have not learned, inflioting a dangerous, if not fatal, wound. Frances was taken to Indianapolis and lodged in the county jail. He admits that he did the cutting.

THE adoption of this amendment will throw tbe entire negro question, out of politicBj and smash the last available plank in tbe democratic .platform. It is truly wonderful to see with what a death grasp tbe effete democrsoy clutch at the negro as the last remaining plank from their fearful shipwreck, to float them safe out of tbe political tempest which their, treason to th'e self evident truth of our immortal Declaration of Independence, and the Rights 6f. A WOMAN by the name of Dempsey alias Tusnor, committed suicide at Warsaw, on Sunday night by taking arsenic. Sfie bad married a man by the iiame of .Joseph Dempsey, alias Jones, at Horseheads, Chemung county, N. Y., four years ago. Dempsey bad deserted her for a woman of bad repute and had come West. His wife joined him and his paramour some time ago at Warsaw, since whieh time they have lived a terrible life uqtil her death. She left a young infant. Her widowed mother and relatives in New York are, said to be quite respectable peopie .i*.

MRS. CLEM, in her application for a bew trial, alleged and submitted affidavits to prove: "That the verdict has been rendered by ui'ors who, pri»r to being impanneled, lad both formed and expressed an opinion as to the guilt of the defendant, and who are, therefore, incompetent, by law, to fairly and impartially try said cause.— That four of the jurors, to-wit: John P, Moore, Benjamin Stokely, Wm. Varice, and Charles G. Wilson, and each of them, jrior to being impanneled and sworn is urors, to try said cause, bad both formed and expressed opinions as to the guilt of said defendants, wbich facts are moro jaarticularly shown by the affidavits of

ELiram Baker, jr., G. William Crawford, Thomas Smith, William Newman, Nathaniel S. Hall, William W. Walton, Stephen Allhand, tiled herewith, and made a part hereof, and which facts were unknown to the defendant or her counsel, as shown by the affidavits of the defendant, Nancy E. Clem, and of her counsel, JohnHanna, William W. -Leathers, and Jonathan W. Gordon,.filed herewith, and made a part hereof."

11

There were nineteen other reasons offered, but neno of such importance as the one quoted. Major Gordon read the affidavits named, which set forth that the jurors mentioned had expressed a firm conviction of the guilt of Mrs. Clem, prior to their impannelment as jurors, two of them having gone so far as to say if they were put on the jury they would hang her] also the affidavits of her Attorneys to tbe purport that they were not aware of any of the matters set forth in suoh affidavits until after the trial was far ad* vanced, as also the affidavit of the defendant, Mrs. Clem, to the same effect.

The prosecution entered a motion asking time to bring counter affidavits, regarding the character of the affiants for tbe defense, which was granted by -the Court and the further tearing of tbe case was postponed without date.

BY TELEGRAPH

!v From Indianapolis. INDIANAPOLIS, March 9.—SUas Hartman, brother of Mrs. Clem, now in jail waiting trial for the Young murder, haa made confession, in wbich he states that he was in the conspiracy, but was not present, and did not take an active part in the murder, and that Mrs. Clem was not at Cold Spring when the murder waa committed. The woman who decoyed the Youngs to Cold Spring was a prostitute named Frank Clarke, and that she and a man named Fiscus committed the murder.

He also implicates Bobert L. Dorsey in the conspiracy, and says Dorsey got Young's money.

His statement is not believed. His object is doubtless to relieve MM. Clem and lighten his own punishment Neither Dorsey or Fiscos have been arretted, and there is no doubt but Hartman and Mrs I Clem are the murderers.

This view eminently controlled Mr. Stewart, and in order ta

remove all objections he declined the appointment. Since there have been doubts about Stewart's taking possession of the Treasury Department, telegrams from leading merchants have been received, urging him in the strongest terms to make any sacrifice, even to abandoning at once all [.interest in his business, to retain the office, and advifting him under no circumstances to deoline.
