THB EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT AT THE MANSION.
The President drove from his residence to the Executive Manson this morning He-proceeded to the reception room for morning visitors, recently occupied by Mr. Johnson, where he at once entered upon his duties as Executive. He wss busily engaged in the preliminary busi ness, bearing upon the Cabinet, and the appointment of Secretaries. Great crowds approached the White House from all di rections, many of them strangers, intent upon going through the building, but none of them were admitted up to one o'clock. President Grant, entered alone, and quietly, in plain black clothes and beaver bat, and carried in his mouth the inevitable cigar. Mrs. Grant, the Misses Grant, Miss^ Felt, of Illinois, a connec tion, and other ladies of the household accompanied by Generals Dent, Bawl ings, and others, arrived later, and made a brief inspection of their new home.— At half-past twelve they drovo off in their carriages. The servants were busy laying a new carpet In the main hall, and making other changes and preparations

March 5.—A great
deal of excitement prevails here on account of the murder of A. J. Todd and bit wife, six miles south of this place, last night. At an early hour this morning a man named Bright called at Todd's house, to go with him to their daily workBright was unable to get any answer from the inside, and cauld not open tbe door. He looked into tbe window And saw the murdered man and woman. He went to the neighbors and gave the warar ine, and sent to this place for tbe coroner who summoned a juryfand went to the place of the murder." Todd wss found faying on the floor with his throat cut from e*r to ear and a bullet hole in his breast, and a rifle gun laying about three feet from his body. Both bands were clasped on bis breast over the bullet hole. His throat bad been cut while in bed where he had bled to death, and then dragged

Bonnty claim*- =andw tbe recent law, act of July 2Bth, 1866, are now nearly all paid. Anew law for the next and last bounty, may, perhaps, be passed'this winter. JNo Land Warrants need be expected for service in the late war, and no further bounty to a. vet* eran, who has had three or four hundred dollars. t'bave never loet a good claim where th* party permitted me to maoageit in my own. way, I have lost two valid claims on aoconnt of such interferenca.. ..
