Railroad Mbbtinq.—The citizens of Rosedale and vicinity will meet at Rosedale on Saturday next for the purpose of raising subscriptions for the extension of the E. & C. Railroad from Rosedale to Danville, Illinois, by way of Roseville, Mecca and Montezuma. Prominent railroad men have been invited to attend^ and all interested are requested to be

present.

Liqvob Liobnsbs Granted. The County Commissioners have granted license to retail liquors to the following ap- I

plleants: H. Hendrick, Wm. Schriever, Phi Bive, Lawrence Campbell, Higdon & Kinman, H. Apman, Wm. Shafler, Victor Hauger, Davis & Glfford, Nicholas Vilbeck, A. Kaulfman, H. Apman, Wm. Fuhr, John Petri, J. M. Davis, John Smith, E. G. L. Doyle, Christian Tapped Thomas Byrne, Mathew Peters, John Garbs, A.Lorey, FoTster & Fahnley, J: M. Bross, Walsh & Co., J. E. Wilkinson, Wm. Coburn, John R. O'Connell, Leo. Werner and L. Burgert.

We will not spoil the effect of such frankness *nd good sense by an attempt to ifiipress it upon those who may benefit by it, nor do more than append the hint of s.uch a contrite offender to newspaper qorrespondeGts. "Articles for newspapers are often re jected because the writer does not come at once to his subject Space is.too precious to be wasted, and the editor grudges every line. We almost invariably find that a communication is doubled in interest by omitting the first page or two of the manuscript, and begin with a leading j^aragragh after the writer has warmed to his work."

A Rink.—-Our mention-a few days since that there was a good prospect of a Bink being built in this city the incoming season, appears to have been without foundation—all wind. We hop« those interested will go to work and accomplish something tangible. Such a building would be not only a source of infinite pleasure, but a convenience to the city, as well as a profitable investment. So much has been said abobt rinks of late that but little need bo added. They are

no longer dependable oh ic9, for roller skating has become very fashionable in "rink cities." Thev are also thrown open to velocipedes, and furnish the bes1, opportunities tor displays of skill in this lln«. Then they can be used for fairs, festivals, conventions and large gatherings of all kinds. All these things make it an investment which is sure to pay.— Asa matter of economy it would be a good investment for young men to take shares of stock in tbe erection of the structure. All other amusements, such as riding, balls, parties, theatre, concerts, •tc., are attended with serious depletion of the pocket, while the rink only calls for a pair of skates that if property selected, and then taken care of, may last a life-time. "We say let the rink movement be started, with shares so low that every young man in the city can invesl? Who wiU taka the initiatory steps. It only has to be started in the right way to prove successful.

''Introductions."—A recent nember of the Chicago Advance has a chapter on "Introductions" which illustrates in itself the point it enforces. It is a plea for brevity and directness in public writers and speakers, with not a superflous word in it. How forcible aod how true is tjj confession like this "Were we to re-write the discourse of twenty*flve years which we have inflfc-. ted upon long-suffering congregations, wa should throw away nearly the entire, introductions, (which cost us, alas! How much anxious labor,) and dash at once into the subj eot matter.''
