MR. PBihLIPS' CRITIC CRITICISED ____ Editors Express:

Your'fssue of yes

terddy a ci4tiaisai na Mr. Phillip Phillips' "Evening of Sacred Song," given at Dbwling Hall last Friday night. Two points are criticised—the ihannoter of the entertainment, and the manner in which it Was given. In regard to the first "Exit" ealla it a "oOfccwt," and says that it w|is "advertised" as such. He objects alsojj to the portions of Scripture which were read, to Mr. P.'s remarks on church music, &c. Indeedj^he Beems to think that a publio'hait Is not the place to" in troduce the Word of or to talk abo|lt church music. He has been so !on| accustOtoed to listen to negro melddieq, light, flippant and operatic singing, in public halls, that the novelty of hear Ing^n$tliitig«scted in st^ a place comports very illy with his ideas of propriety Anfe he sa?$,&iUn»t teca&se of-this relig ious vein running through the evoning's entertainment, "too many in that audi enB felt that they »wdre imposed upon on jihis accpunt, and w,ent awa| dissatis Qe4" And yet he tells as in a previous pattigrapb, that "a large part of the audi enob was composed of those calling them, selves Christians, .and belonging to Evan geljcal Churches." While these "sympathised wit^i Phillips in hfe zeal to promote holy and congregational sing, itigj" &c, he thinks that all of them did not approve of the time, place, manner, &cj, of Mr. P. in promoting these ends. That is to say, Christian people, when th«r go to a public hall, even to enjoy an "efeDing oTiacred song," do iTot expefct' anything sacred, are outraged if a few ve&es of Scripture are read, if a few re. ma^ks are made dn tfae ipanoer in which Go& should be praised in song, in bis own sailctuaryM AU this would be well enough fin |i church, but in a hcrtl, it i3 very much ouf of place. Now, all this seems too lilly for a man of sense, and. we feppe for the good selse, not to mention Christian' seAlfiCfSbt, of our oitiaen, that "Extt" is alciie in his ire regarding this feature of entertainment. He farther on says, thit many of tha audieooe "oould not and dicj not cajoy the concert because they fell that deception or misrepfesental'op bad drawn them tfeore." Now, let me say, in regard to this very grave and vejry ungon, erous charge, aimed doubtless at ibe beads of those who secured Mr. Phillips' service*, and advertised him for tb# octtthm:

And w^ may here state that^b^ta^&f 0cnn| from which he was still suffering, was diptheria than which nothing more iojurious to the public speaker or singer, could befall him.
