the Government.
IF THAT "divinity that shapes our ends," intoDds to keep this government from speedy and irremediable ruin, it will be preserved, as far as possible, from the influence of New Tork and Pennsylvania politicians. In this connection it is painfully suggestive to notice that the first New York applicant for appointment under Gen. GBANT is a gentleman who has by legal trickery obtained, during the last fifteen years, the liberation more burglars, pickpockets, and other thieves, than any other half doeen law yers in the great city.
THE political canvass in New Hanip shire for the State election, which comes off in fifteen days, is of the dullest possi ble kind. The entire list of State officers with three members of Congress, are to be elected, and the Republican candi dates have all taken position on afield which they knoff will be easily won. For Governor, the Democrats have nomina ted a Union soldier (Gen.
BLAINE'S
BEDEL)
"THE great event of the age," the open ing of the Pacific Railroad, will be cele' brated about June next with a grand ex curslon from Omaha to San Francisoo, and perhaps a trip to the Sandwioh Islands Forty-five new and elegant coaches are being built by the Union Pacific Rail road Company expressly for this occa sion. There will be about one thousand invited guests, inoluding many national notabilities. As the Paoiflo Railroad is the greatest achievement of modern times, so it is intended to make this in augural exoursion the greatest ever made. San Francisco will welcome the arrival of the excursionists with Joyous cannon bonfires and illuminations, and "copious, gushing tears." In addition to all this, the Cincinnati Timu understands they are preparing an earthquake for the es pecial gratification of tholr Eastern friends who never experienced one. By this process they could do band-shaking by the wholesale. Tidal wave wouldn't be a bad thing with which to wash the travel-ftained excursionists on their arrival.
THE Cincinnati Chronicle is in possession of information of such an authentic and roliable character, as to lead the editor to believe that the Cabinet slate as already made up, has the name of Hon. WM. Dennison on it ae Postmaster General. The Chronicle alludes to the well known fact that very friendly relations have always existed between the President elect and Ex-Oov. Dbnnisok, and very properly construes the selection of the Ex-Governor for this important position into a notice to the country, from the President-eleot. that economy in the man« agement of public affairs, is to be the rule in the new Administration. It will be remembered that under DsirxiaoK, the Postoffice Department paid its way and saved something to the Treasury beside. Under his successor there has been a large deficit, and open charges made of gross frauds in contracts. Wt trust all this is to be changed and believe Mr. Dxxjusok has the will and the ability to do ii He had taken deep interest in this department of the public service, but this was no recommendation with President JOHK SON, who wanted a willing tool in the work of betraying the country. Governor Dennzson attempted to save the Administration from the shame which JOHNSON seemed determined to bring upon it but rather than sacrifioe his principles he resigned his office. His reappointment now will be a handsome vindication.
Mr. Dennison has always held an honorable place in the Republican party.— His appointment will receive the hearty approbation of his party friends in Indiana and throughout the country.
DuslffO the twelve months Sliding Oat. 1668, the official record! show that ft,* 451 known crimes, of greater or less magnitnde, wero" committed in New York city. Of these critnes 78 were murder, 7,721 assaults #gain»t the person, and the remainder thefts and robberies of various kinds. £y the end of 1868 the number of known crimes exceeded 101,000—a much larger number than any previous year can show. And yst that city pays about |9j000 per day to maintain order and protect life and property.

It seems to be hard for the parties to get up an issue over whieh they can have an active fight. And the old Granite State, once famous for its political contests, will continue in strong Republican line, while the demoralized Democracy go through the form of vot ing for their candidates.
amendment to the army bill
adopted by the House, provides that no new commission shall be issued in any regiment until the military force is re duced to twenty regiments of infantry, five of cavalry and five of artillery. It provides that regiments shall be consol idated as rapidly as possible until the minimum is reached and it further pro' vides that there shall be HO new appoint mentB and no promotions in the Adju tant General's Department, in the Fay Department, in the Quartermaster's Department, in the Ordnance Department, or in the Medical Department. These measures will, before the end of the year, insure a considerable reduction in our military expenditure, but will not insure such a reduction as the people have rea son to demand, and have a right to ex peot.
New Albany and Chicago Railroad.
ille,
By virtue of a decree in favor of D.WILLIAMSON I granted by the White county OomnSbn Fleas Court, the sheriff of White county will sell to the highest bidder, by •auction on the 8th day of April next, at
Monti cello, White county, the track, rolling stock, machine and repair shops, and all the rights and franchises of the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Railroad Company, from New Albany to Michigan City. The New Albany Commercial, in noticing the above, says:
We have the best authority for saying that the road will be purchased by the bondholders wbo number several of the wealthiest men of the city of New Tork. The road is now, in its tracks and rolling stock, in better condition than ever before. The purchasers will further im prove it, ana will operate it as a first class road. We have authority for saying that the management of the road, after, its sale, will bn such as to give the mo3t entire satisfaction to the people along the line of the road. It will be the a:m of the purchasers to popularize the road and operate it with energy, believing that by such a course its business will be doubled in a short time. A letter received by us from a geniletban in New York
City, Who is a large holder of the bonds of the road, says: "We appreciate the importance of building the proposed rail road from Bedford, via Bioomfleld, Terre Haute. Besides lapping a mineral region of untold wealth, it would prove a most valuable feeder to the Southern ond of the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago road. I do not think the people of New Albany could engage in an enter prise promising more substantial benefits to their oity. I am quite confidont that, should the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago road fall into the hands of those now contemplating its purchase, thisrjoad from Bedford to Terre Haute woffld' receive from them such assistance as Would assure its speedy construction."

Particulars of the Shocking Affair— Confession of the Murderer.
[Correspondence of the Des Moines (Iowa) Bests tar.] While I was snow-bound in Monroe I gathered all the information to be had in regard to that horrible murder which occurred near Red Rook a few days ago. It Hums that Shafer had made up bis mind some time ago that his wife must die, assbe would not live with him, and he loved her so pearly he could not see hor live with others and he says he oould think of nothing short of death to her and himself also. He says In hii confession that after having some words with his wife in the sitting-room, that she got up and started for a bed-room that stood on the west side he started after her, rrhen his mother-in-iaw Interfered that he took up a chair and struck her (hia mother in-law) on the head, knocking he^ down. He then told her to leave the bouse or he would kill her, too. He then went into the bed.room where his wife Was, and when she saw him coming in she ran out, when be Caught her around the waist with his left arm, and putting the revolver close to the back of her head, he fired killing her instantly. He then lay down by her side, and putting the pUtol to his head snapped all the oops on the remaining barrels, but none would explode. Throwing the revolver away, he took a knife he had provided himself with, and endeavored to cut his throat He made a deep and ugly wound, cutting the windpipe half off and many small arteries, but his cutting was all done directly under the chin he did not leach the main jugular. When his windpipe was cut his breaming became difficult, and at times, as the blood from the small veins ran 1% strangulation ensued so according to hia own feelings, death would soon release his sufferings. *73^,',

The author of all edneas is still alive if ^converses freely says he is not sorry for what be has done, and only regrets that he did not succeed in putting an end to himself also. He says his wife was a good woman, one of the dearest and loveliest in all the world, and that she has gone straight to heaven, and if he only had died with her he would have gone there too. He had no intention of killing or hurting any one but himself aad wife. A preliminary examination Was held, and he was bound over to court. Not being able to be removed to jail at Newton, a guard was placed over him in the hotel at Red Rock, where he now lies.

Hard on Fella.
Pella is the name of a little village in Iowa, on the line of the Burlington & Des Molnea Railroad, about twenty-five miles south of the latter named city. By the way, it is a singular geographical fact that there is a Pella, and only one, io each of the four quarters of the globe— Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Alex ander the Great was born in Pella, Europe. But that is neither here nor there, especially here.
Pella, Iowa, was founded by a colony of Hollanders, and has the characteristics of a Holland village, nearly all the inhabitants, men, women and children, clumping Around in woodenJhws,
