The Normal School BuildingIK

AN article on the Siste Norm®

School the Evansville Journal e&ytThe great mistake waiin eMcftiogauct an expensive balldipe, One 000 would have Answered aji .ttfe ». ofata 'tfnrmal Sdhool. But we wants of a State Normal School suppose the State will now be compelled to make a heavy appropriation to com' plete the edifice. v.

There is room for an honest difference of opinion as to whether the erection: of I'such an expensive building" was "great mistake," or a display of sound economy anA wise forethought. "We think it was the latter, but shall not quar rel with our Bvanrfille cotemporaly f°i holding a different opinion. The School Trustee! of the Olty of Bvansville, one of whom is an editor of the Journal, he.vt recently ereoted two magnificent structures for school houses in that city, costing from $35,000, to 150,000, each, and af a time whsn the Mayor of the" city was obliged.to negotiate loans "at twenty-two and a half per cent, interest." If Evansville can afford such an expenditure for school purposes, surely this great State, with her magnificent school fund of eight million dollars, with her imperative and constantly increasing need of trained teachers, can afford to erect one respectable building for the utilisation of our vast amount of home talent in the pro feseion of the teacher. And especially can the State afford to do this when the liberality of Terre Haute has already given $76,000 for this object. "But," the Journal mournfully con eludes, "we suppose tbe State will now be compelled to, make a heavy appropriation to oomplete the edifice." "Com. polled Tes, that is Just the word.—

States, like individuals, if passably hon est, are "compelled" by a common ee^se of honor and "a decent regard for the opinions of mankind," to fulfill their pledges. The State ii pledged to thit city to oomplete the Normal School Building, and unless the Legislature snail decide to repudiate its faith, it will feel "compelled" to mako the necessary appro priation

Let it be borne in mind that if any "mistake" was made In deciding upon tbe cost of the edifice, that "mistake" was made by the State and not by Terre Haute. The city did not undertake diotate or direct what plan should be adopted. The State had a choice of several plans, varying very much in cost and, wisely, as we think, decided on the best and consequently most expensive one. "When completed tbe State will own one public building that will not, like the rest of its efforts in that line, be pointed out as an architectural monstrgsj^ty and abomination. It will not have be torn down in a few years to abate nuisance, but will stand for centuries as splendid illustration of the good sense and fine taste not only of the mind that conceived the plan, but of the men who preferred and adopted it. When Bvanp ville architects and builders make their customary tours to this city in quest suggestions and models, they will gaze upon it with delight, and feel devoutly thankful that the State was "compelled" to finish so "great" a "mistake." And the young men and womon of Evansville, graduates of her excellent system of public sohools, as they pursue the study of the theory and practice of teaohing, in this building, will Add their aesthetic sense daily developing in the contemplation of its* fair proportions. They, tooj will be thankful that they are not "cabined, cribbad, confined" in four square, homely walla, and will gratefully remsm* ber the "great mistake." ...-s

Teachers and Other "Imports".

In an article relative to the State Normal School, replying to some strictures in the Evansville Journal, a few days ago, we said: "If we are not mistaken, Evansville now imports a large proportion of her teachers from the Eastern Sratec, because this State has no institution for the proper education of teachers."

To this assertion the Jonrnal takes exception, and asserts that: Evansville does not "now import a large proportion of her teaohers from the Eastern States." The majority of tho present corps are graduates of our own excellent High School or former pupils of our city schools, and but a few of them came to this city from the Eastern States.

With tbe exceptions of this city and Indianapolu, there is probably no city in the State which has better public schools thin Evansville, and We are lad to know that not|only Evansville, but the State at large is becoming "year by year less de~ pendent upon the East for teachors."— The Journal seems to have tortured our language into a reflection upon "Yankee" teachers. We intended just tbe roversa fhii city, the State, indeed the entire Wcst, owea a debt of gratitudo that should be lasting, to tbe thousands of "Yankees'* who have served, and are still serving, with unwearied patience and rare fidelity, as public school teachers. Here it the language in the use of which it was our misfortune to give offense "We are under sufficient bondage to the East already in the matter of imports. Let us try to raise our own teacher*, since we have an abundant snpply of the best material, and have no other earthlv use for it."

3

Well, are we not under sufficient bondage to the East in the matter of imports Take almost any msaCyou meet, and examine his clothing, foViostance, from hat to boots, and you will be almost sure to find that every ariteb—or the goods from which it was made—came from the East The merchants of Evansville buy cotton from Southern dealers or producers. They ship it a thousand miles to a market. It passes through twenty different hands, leaving a large profit in each," and finally finds its way back to Evansansville in the shape of prints or sheetings. So, in a' thousand other wajs, we are under bondage to the East—a seedless, senseless bondage^-and Eastern
