This is the name of the man who had his leg amputated for the third time last summer in this city^but he claimed to have lost the limb in battle.

Gen. JaSies Babnes died at Spring field, Massachusetts,.on Friday laBt. He was distinguished during the war, first as Colonel of a Massachusetts regiment and subsequently as a Brigadier General. At the time of his death he was one of the Commissioners of the Pacific Bailroad on the part of the Government. He will be remembered by our citizens as one of the me in bare of the firm of Phelps, Mattjbon & Barnes, the builders of the Tfcrre Haute, Alton

The four boys arrested Saturday night, charged with thieving, were lent to jail by the ftayor, after an examination yesterday morning, in default of three hundred dollars bail in each case. The fact is that people are beginning to find out the' worthlessness of advertising in the eighth page papers, where tbeir advertisements are folded in out of sight of readers, and to preter sheets like The Express where what they have to say is sure to be seen by everybody. Publishers of course have to consult the wishes of their advertising customer!, and hence the improvement we speak of.

The Board resolved to have the Canal opened for business from Montezuma to the State line on the 1st of April.

The Canal Is in much better condition than last year, and the prospect of an increase of navigation more favorable^.
