ern Confederacy, Mr. A. H. Stephens, is now inclined to take less sombre views of our public affairs than he has heretofore indulged la. Ever since the downfall of the Confederacy he has been looking for tho establishment of a great despotic government, in which the rights of the States and the liberties of the citizens should be restrained by a military power somewhat similar to that which exists in France. Now, however, he holds that though the iuture of the country is uncertain, the prospects are hopeful. He says that all the country wants to restore its high prosperity is good a government and he has great confidence in Grant, whom he desoribes as possessing the "rarest combination of elements of character of, perhaps, any man living." We are pleased to hear that this able and influential Southern politician iB able to entertain more cheerful views of theJRepublio.
A WRITER in the New York Evening Post, signing himself "An Old Bepublican" urges the appointment of Hon. CHA.SI.ES FRANCIS ADAMS to the position of Secretary of State. He clos»s as folfollows: 1 admit he ia not a very genial man to everybody. He has none of the arts of popularity and, if Gen. Grant wants a Secretary chiefly or largely ornamental, Mr. Adams is not his man.
But if in that bi^h office is required a statesman of dignified mannori, of irreproachable character, of life-long preparation for just such a position —a man accustomed from youth to the careful consideration of the class of quotations that will oftenest arise for discussion in our foroign relations—brought up under the most elevating influences, instructed by distinguished teachers, furnished beyond most if not all his fellowcountrymen with the vast and varied knowledge demanded by his duties, and endowed with tho experience gained iu eight years of offioial life as Ministor at the most important Court, in Europe du« ring the m^t embarrassing period of our history—then he will find no uiau to compare with Charles Francis Adams.
THAT
the abolition of slavery is a pe
cuniary gain to the South is now agreed by all sensible men there. Tho l'ree negroes can actually earn more money l'or themielvos and their employers than they could bo made to earn for their matters when slaves. The demonstration of this truth is now complete, and it marks with an inextinguishable brilliancy the mighty change which those last eight years have wrought in our country. We may, indeed, wish that so beneficent transformation could have been produced by some other means than a bloody and desolating war but as that method was adopted by the Divine Providence which governs all affairs, we must believe that it was on the whole the best the case admitted of In truth, it is plain that nothing but a civil war could have overthrown slavery. Its power was too enormous and too deeply involved with every part of,our politioal and social system to be otherwise broken down. At any rate, we can look upon the facts that now surround uk with no feeling but -one of gratitude and hope and the enviable destiny now opening before the South is on« which men of *11 opinions may hail with unmixed satisfaction and delight

Lewis Werrlck, a married man with a I bottles, addressed to Queen's Hotel, Towife and one child, attempted suicide at
Council Bluffs, on Sunday night, by stabbing himself with a pair of scissors. He struck himself in the region of the heart, inflicting a very ugly wound, which, up, to last accounts, had not proved fatal, though small hopes a are entertained of his recovery. Mental depression and inab|lity to obtain work were the incentives.
A romantic elopement occurred in Bar* bour county, Va., recently. Lady and gentleman loved sensibly and visibly. Papa objected foolishly. Lady wisely re» I fused to marry without consent Lovor gets mad and goes of weeping and wailing and gnashing bis teeth. Then lady gets another beau, is engaged to him, and the wedding day fixed. Lover No. 1 now repents, retjirne, lady remembers her forgetfulness and agrees to elope with him. The day fixed for marriage with No. 2 arrives, and the bridal party is on its way to the preacher's—they were crossing a log foot bridge, when lover No 1 on horseback gallops to the bridge, lady jumps on tho horse and the pair ride off at full speed, leaving the rest of the party astounded and confounded. The runaways were married.
The Danville (V&.) Register says: Monday evening last, Mattie C. Wood, 13 years old, daughter of James Wood, who live9 near Arnoldton, in this county, was sent by her mother, along with her Bister and a negro girl, to a piece of woods two hundred yards from the residence, to break some bushes for the purpose of making some broom3. for some reason she did not return with her companions but her absence at length excited fears, when search was made for her in every direction without avail. At the same time a negro, named Munro Toler, alias Dillard, who bad been employed on Mr, Wood's farm, disappeared from the place, and there were fear entertained that he first outraged the girl and then murdered her. But she was not murdered, for on Sunday evening last tbe couple (negro man and white girl) were seen on the Franklin Turnpike, near Danville, coming in this direction. They were pursued by a brother of the girl and by Constable Keatts, of this county, and it is thought it was the negro's aim to make his way into North Carolina with his companion. Some of the town police and other citizens went out on Monday to join the pursuit, but th,e twain was not found at last accounts.

Be-Burial of the Remains—The Faneral Services—How the Corpse Looked.
Front Washington Ohronlol*, of Tuetflay.) The President issued an order yesterday morning for the delivery of the re mains of Mrs. Surratt to Father Walter, of St. Patrick's Church of this city, ana yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clook that gentleman, in company with Mr. Towne, and Harvey & Marr, undertakers, proceeded to the arsenal, and the remains were at OQC0 disinterred. Immediately after the execution, Mrs. Surratt's remains, with those of Paine, Harold and Atzerodt, executed at the same time, wer.e placed in boxes and interred in graves near the scaffold, her body being at the north end of the row, and the others adjoining her remains in the order named above. In the box with each body there was also placed the name of the party, written otT parchment, enclosed in a bottle. The body of Booth was also buried near there that is, inside the o)d penitentiary building, near the main door pf tbe Warden's residence. The burial of Booth was quietly made, in the presence of Secretary Stanton,Gen. L. C. Baker, and two of his officers, and CoL Benton, commandant of the Arsenal and after tbe grave bad been filled and a proportion of the bricks relaid over it, the windows of the wareroom were boarded up and the door locked. The body of Wirz, the Aniersonville {jailor, was placed in the yard, adjoining the body of Atzerodt. For some time the bodies were allowed to remain in this position, A wooden fence was erected around the graves, and a wooden headboard, with the name of the person buried below, placed at each grave. In the fall of 1867, when the demolition of the penitentiary building was determined on, it became necessary to remove the bodies, and thoy were buried in ihe warehouse known as No. 1 (the second building below th« principal office), the bodies being placed under flagging. Mrs. Surratt's was laid next to the north wall of the building, and the others adjoining in the following order: Paine, Harold, Atzerodt, Wirz and Booth. There tbe bodies of all have remained until yesterday. The coffio, when lifted, was in tolerable condition, aad when opened the remains were found to be in an excellent state of preservation The faoe, though black, was yet perfect in features, and the whole body compact and firm. The dreEs looked well, and the gaiter shoes appeared not to be the least soiled.
Upon the day of execution, her daughter, Annie, who visited her, took from her bonnet a steel arrow and stuck it upon her mother's dress, close up to tbe neck, and which remained where it had been placed by the daughter, The bottle, with the name of Mr*. Surratt writ-

This Compinj, National in its character, oOe by reason of Its large Capital, Low Bates af Pro. clcio and New Tables, the most desirabls BSSES of insarlu liie yet presented theptlblia.
The rates of premium being largely reduced are made as favorable to the insurars as those of the best Mutual Companies, and avoid all the complications and uncertainties of Notes, Dividend*, and the misundertanings which the latter are so apt to cause the Polcy-Holder.
Several new aud attiastiVe tables are now presented, which need only to be understood fo prove acceptable the.publlc, such as tksIN-COilE-PBODCOlNO POLICY and MTPIW ?SEM1CIII POLICT. In the former, the policyholder not only etcorts a life insaranoa, payable at death, but will receive, if living, after a period of a few yens, an a»*ual income equal to Im per cent. (10 per tent.) rf hie policy. In the latter, the Company agrees to return to tie arnurtd 1* totsi amount of money he hat paid in, te addition to the amount of hie policy.
The attention of paraons contemplating Insuring their live* or iooieaslng the amount of Insurance they already have, Is called to the special advantages offered by tbe National Life Iasaranos Company.
