Prom present indications we suppose he will now attempt to reverse the order and fill them &11 over again, ending his sublime swing ground the official circle in the same aldermanic chair which, in his youthful days, was pressed by that portion of hi august person which is stjppoosed to contain whatever of cerebral tissue was -au-

The enterprising book house of S. Q. Griggs & Ob., is about to issue a physical geography of the Mississippi valley including the lake region. It is by Colonel J. W. Fobtbb, a well-known aavatit of Chicago, now President of the Ameri can Association for tbe Advancement cjf Science. We have seen and examin some of the advanced sheets of this work, and judge that .it will be found of grei value in making known the topograph resources, and material wealth generally of this.vast region of country. Such 9 work has long been needed, and the telligent public will look forward to the jisnanoe of It with unusual interest.
The Mississippi valley is the heart the continent and to know thoroughly i^ geography, using the term in its broalei sense, is to have the key to thejtopography of the entire.continent.
Thk Boston Traveler predicts th Grant will select Hon. A. H. Kick the New England member of his Oabim and that he will consign to his care t' portfolio over which the Old Man of Sea now keepB watch and ward. Traveler stated, that Mr. j&OB is at pre ent suspiciously on a visit at Washin ton, is of well-known friendship towa: Gba^t, and knows more about the bus nees of the navy department than an other man. It is just possible that the incoming President may place a high estimate on the last named recommend^ tion. He may havei an old-faahioned notion that a Slcretary of the jNavy ought to know enough of nautical matters to be able to distinguish between a frigate aqjil a "tug." If he does chorish such obsolete views, however, it shows that he is not "progressive," and we fear he never be able to construct a Cabinet th will satisfy the politicians. And it just withinjthe range of remotest possibility that he will not care a oontinent|j Whether his Cabinet-making satisfies or dissatisfies those same politicians, prov id ed it suits himself.

Thk decision of General G&axt, definitely announced some days ago, n^t to appear at any'inauguration ball or r^oeption, is oommended by the respectable press of the entire country. This deciiion, simple and unimportant as it may appear to the casual observer^ is probably a very.significant indication of the future poliey of the incoming Administration —a straw which 6hows which way a very great wind will blow. Are we nearing the rigid simplicity ot severe republicanism Is the new regime to make good in practice the theory of our democrat!: system
Tbe immediate results .of this expression of the Presidential intention are n6t few nor unimportant. Retrenchfteat will be the order and faihion of the day. Display and extravagance will not be a passport to promotion or favor of the Administration. Public office will not be looked to as the reward of social, foll^ and the poor Qbvernmeht cIetts'reHoved from tax of ball or reception attendance, will find in that exemption at once an equivaleZ? to -the twenty par cent, in* crease of salary sq persistently and pile-1 ously called for. Office-seekers, and those who hope to bask in the sunshine of the departments, will probably find it to their advantage to ponder on the Presidential position in this matter, and direct their walk and conversation ia accordance therewith.

A Letter Heretofore Unpublished Written by Benjamin Franklin The Chicago Evening Journal says it is indebted to C. B. Nklson, Esq., of that city, for the privilege of presenting the following beautiful and characteristic memorial of Dr. Franklin to its readersj: FROM DR. FRANKLIN TO MISS B. H'JBBAB:
When they become unfit for their purposes, and affordju pain instead of plea^ ure, instead of an aidjbscome an incumbrance, and answer none of the intentions for which they were given, it & equally kind and benevolent that away provided by which we may get rid of them. That way is death. We ourselves prudently, in some cases, choose a partial death. A mangled, painfol limb, which «sn not i» restored, we willingly cut off. He that plucks oat a tooth pttrts with it freely, since the pain goes with it and he that quits the whole body parts with all pains and possibility of'palns anefdisea^es It was liable to or capable of making him ^iffer. Our friend and we are invited abroad on a party of pleasure that is to last forever. His chair* was first ready, and he has gone before us.— We could not conveniently all start together, and why should you and I begrieved at this, fjnce we are soon to foJ low, and we know where to find him.
